cushy job

The kids are at tutor and I'm hanging out at the library. Honestly I think I need this librarians job or he should not have one here. He's a nice guy but really.... The library has been open an hour. I was near his station when we first came he was on FaceBook, texting, and then saw him on Babalon5? He's gotten up a few times and only after 20 min of them delivering a local parenting newspaper did he get up to unstrap it. Seriously, I'd love to walk around smile, sit, text do what I please til someone has a question... that's my kind of job! *LOL* Partly why I stared this discussion is also because they just cut the hours they are open and if they can afford to pay this man a salary, they can afford to keep the library open! JMHO.

If he is that lazy I doubt he will have the job much longer. I personally like being busy at work. I think it makes the day go faster. I also would not want to have a desk job. I would find it boring and would probably gain a ton of weight.

I'd be shelving off the carts where they have you put the books you discard on or something. I don't mind a desk job but I need to be doing something and able to get up and do things. I know what I was pregnant I swear I used to fall asleep at my desk.

Wow, he sounds really lazy. There is a lot to do in a library! Making minor repairs to books, checking books in and re-shelving them, dusting, replacing books that are misplaced. Plus children's programs activities, answering mail and emails and probably dozens of other little jobs. People like that infuriate me, coasting through a job and using the time they are supposed to give to their employer for their own purposes. I would definitely call the city council or someone and tell them how my tax dollars are being wasted.

Nope that man just sits there on the computer or texting. He will help you if you go to his desk otherwise he's just a warm body sitting there just in case. I usually see the ladies up there doing things, they don't sit too long they are checking on the kids on the computers, the tot play area... one time my daughter asked about a movie that was in the adult section or somewhere else that lady went down stairs to fetch it which wasn't even necessary KWIM? She could of told her where to check in the adult section.

He sounds like a real dud, and where is the supervisor? I have never seen anyone at our library with idle hands or time to do all of that. They keep extraordinarily busy, in my opinion. Now they did rearrange some of our hours, but it still has the same number of hours. They just are reflecting the usage pattern.

That's just it he's up there solo for the most part that I've seen. Occasionally there's another librarian up there but it's usually just to switch command. Or there's a story teller or a shelver up there from time to time. He sees to be very idle just texting and whatever. Yes, I realize part of it is due to how much traffic is in there on a Friday night. Also the fact that most cities are making cuts everywhere they can.

And at my library... you can't even find anyone that will help you! Oh, they are there, but they are always to busy doing "something else right now" and say they will get with me soon as they can. Then they go do whatever it is they are doing. The ones that do the work as far as helping people...are the volunteers! They all have name tags and are designated as employee or volunteer. Not saying librarians don't do their job, but really...they can't help the people in the library? ANd I see them at their desk... or I have even followed them to see where they go when they say they can't help me and they go to this back room...and I hear them all in there chatting and laughing and all....I don't know. I think they take advantage of the volunteers and make them do all the work ...cause they can!

I can find someone to help me w/o trouble. The librarians are NEVER busy at our library. Sounds like the staff at your local library have quite the cushy jobs as well. If they can't even help then why even have it staffed by actual employees then it should be staffed by volunteers and a skeleton staff to oversee?

I'd actually hate a job like that. I hate being bored, especially at work. I need to constantly be doing something, and I'd rather work in a fast paced environment where I'm always busy as opposed to someplace slow leaving me too much time on my hands.

You know, I have several friends and family members that are librarians and one of the things that I've definitely noticed about those individuals is that they are really intelligent people. Though the world that they are doing is not constant, it is something that you have to have a lot of knowledge to be able to do. With that said, I do think that when you are working, you should always be professional, even when you are not really busy with your work.
