I recently downloaded an app call Flashcards.
It is suppose to be teaching kids to read.
It contains a lot of pictures, and the related words.
It is a very useful app to keep the kid entertained, and still learn something at the same time.
One of the cards I have problem with is the one for the letter T.
It is showing a picture of a tortoise. But the word used to describe it is Turtle.
And this is not the first time I have come across mistakes like this.
Do you know how to tell the turtle and the tortoise apart?

In America (which is where your flash cards probably originate), both tortoises (a land animal) and turtles (which primarlily live in water) are commonly referred to as 'turtles' (although the word 'tortoise' is also understood). This is very likely why you have two illustrations on the card of the two different animals.
In Britain and other English-speaking countries, there is a clear distinction made between the amphibious turtle and the land-living tortoise. Mike has already described the differences but, basically, any animal with a carapace which has flippers and lives mostly in water (sea turtles and freshwater turtles) is called a turtle and any animal with a carapace which has feet and lives on land is called a tortoise. Tortoises are also distinguished by being able to retract their heads and feet into their shell, while most turtles cannot do this.
Both species lay their eggs on dry land and some sea-going turtles travel vast distances to lay their eggs on a particular beach at a specific phase of the moon.

The only difference i know about them is their legs, Tortoise has 'toes' while turtles has flat foot with no grip at all.. lol
If ever both of them losses their feet,i won't be able to tell them apart then.. haha
Other than that, is there any striking difference between the two species? I dun think so right, since all of their shells look different, as well as size?
