cute pencils

I'm sure some of you may find this one a bit silly. But you know all the cute pencils that you love to buy your kids? Why on Earth are the majority this shrinky-dink like plastic pattern on pencils that basically peels off or jams up your pencil sharpener?!?!? And with there being a thief in my eldest daughters class I'd like to make her things more distinguishable for her but if you can't sharpen them whats the point? So then ya invest in a million boring yellow pencils that look like every other kids, even some of those by national mfgr's don't work well. Only to have your child ask you every other week for another 10pk of pencils as her's are missing.

hi 3SnuggleBunnies oh how I remember having to buy a ton of those yellow pencils during the years my son was in grade school. It seems to be a thing in schools for kids to steal the darned things and not'even think it was stealing.we went the cute pencils and had the same thing happen.'did you ever buy some and find the lead in them was broken the pencils almost worthless? lol

Sadly this lil girls steals whatever appeals to her not just pencils. You name it she's swiped it and the sad thing is she's been at this school the last 2yrs I think and nothing has been done. Though rumored she doesn't have alot of money is why she does this but most of us don't either, so she's taking from someone who maybe worse off than her. Yes we bought pencils with broken lead in them and boy did that tick me off! We got some one year in taped bundled with a halloween theme from salvation army say 100 pencils in a bundle for like $1... what a deal right? many of them had problems with the lead or the erasers and that metal piece that keeps them on falling off!

With my daughter now being in first grade, I have come to realize that I HATE any of those decorative pencils. The don't sharpen well or the lead always breaks. The erasers seem to break off as well. It frustrates my daughter when the pencil lead breaks on her while she's drawing or doing homework . . . and we have to sharpen it for her all the time. The paint on those decorative pencils are of concern and it does come off. I do like the Ticonderoga brand pencils - I rolled my eyes when I read how they are the best - but after using them at home, I think it might be true!! I didn't buy them before because I thought pencils were pencils . . . but now I realize you get what you pay for (most times anyway). Next summer when these pencils, as well as other school supplies, are up for sale, I'm going to buy them up so we have a supply in the closet. Our problem at home is my daughter keeps losing all these pencils because she won't put them back in the same pencil box . . . but somehow she is able to find the cheap decorative pencils strewn around the house which we all hate!! Come to think of it, I hate all cheap pencil sharpeners too (like those ones they get in birthday party goody bags) as they don't work at all!

I know that there are places where you can order personalized pencils. I agree that most pencils seem worthless any more. i do not know what to do about the thief other than the ones with names on it.

The personalized pencils are quite pricey. Well keeping everything that isn't required for school is the only policy I have since this girl also rides the bus with them.

I used to let my kids put stickers on theirs and those temporary tattoos of lightening bolts and stuff. We would even paint them with model paint to make them special. It was a lot of fun to sit at the table and see who could paint the most outrageous pencil!

That's a good idea. Now model paint won't rub off on your fingers will it? I want to say I used to draw on mine with permenant markers when I was a kid.

I like that, "...if you can't sharpen them whats the point?" Tell your daughter you're not going to supply the class thief with pencils. She can have a boring yellow one that no one will care about stealing.

That's pretty much it if I get one more request for pencils I will contact the teacher. In a way this is why I like community bins of things.

My daughter actually collects the cute pencils that she gets because of the fact that they are just too cute to sharpen and to use. When it comes to supplies in the classroom, they actually have community property so we are only allowed to send in the plain jane yellow #2 pencils. I really think that things are better this way though because of the fact that this way everyone has the same thing and no one has any reason to steal from another child in the classroom.

My oldest daughter is that way about novelty candy and pencils. She has a collection on her shelf of things she won't use cause their too cute. I kinda like the community bins idea, which I think they have but that's only if they don't have their own.

I would speak to my child's teacher if there is a problem with a thief in the room. I like the idea of painting the pencils. I know many classes want the yellow pencils now instead of something else. I home school so we use many pencils and I really don't have much trouble with the cutesy pencils. I notice the pattern does come off some and clog the sharpener, but I think that all other pencils to do.

I remember those days....I love to get the grandkids those...but now I will know better! My kids did the same thing all those years ago...never had enough to last very long. Of course borrowing them to others was a big part of it!

I have noticed that lately as well that the designs instead of being like painted on the pencils when I was a kid is like this plastic stuff that peels off as your are sharpening the pencil. It is weird. What you can do it take the point of a safety pin and scratch your kids name into the pencils and then when your kids see someone with that pencil they can look and see if there name is on it and say hey thats my pencil.

my mom used to take a knife and peel a bit of the pencil off by the eraser and write our names on the pencil.

That's an idea. A bit of effort but I'd imagine that could work, but only on your regular yellow pencils.

I've never had an issue with pencils getting jammed in the sharpener. We also don't have issues with thieves in any of my kid's classes.. that I am aware of.

They don't jammed so much as the shrinky dink wrap design peels off inside the electric sharpener and jams it. Unfortunatly, it's the same girl my eldest has been assigned to be in class with the past couple years seeing they both are labeled LD.

When my daughters are much younger, I always have problem like what you mentioned not only with pencils but also with colors. I tried printing their own sticker with their own picture instead of the usual Disney Princess. Maybe it works, because I still see some of those pencils in their old bags. My sister-in-law who are sending their things would love to buy packs of pencil with cute designs. So when the kids bring this pencils to school, the other kids would be interested to have one because it is different from theirs.

I don't remember having a pencil like that when i was in kinder or elementary. I don't like girlish stuff or some over decorative pencils. I just want the ordinary one. I hope that pencil thief can be found. LOL.
