As you can see and hear from this video I have a big problem with my communication skills. I can write just fine, and I can read and understand just fine, but I cannot speak worth a flip.
If you are a praying person, please pray that God lift this from me. The more agitated I get the worse it gets. What you are hearing now is when I'm not agitated.
Okay... thanks in advance. It might take a minute to load.
I believe in prayer.

I have a son with a speech impedimat, so I know how frustrating this can be. I will be praying for you. I believe that God will heal you. Hang in there, and try not to get agitated. Maybe taking a few deep breaths before you begin to speak will help a little.

Thanks Deedee,
It does help to try and stay as calm as possible. My doc even gets me to do deep breathing before trying to speak... it does help, but it's still there. I believe God will heal this also.

You are welcome Pointlessquestions. My son has a seizure disorder that caused his speech problem. I know that the deep breathing and extra focus on what he was trying to say, and the staying calm seemed to help him a little. I did not view the youtube video, so please tell me exactly what the problem you have is.

You are very brave to put up that video, I'm really inspired by your confidence in doing so. I'm wondering what is that grey device you had that was near your throat under your chin? I'm reminded of a technology that you can mouth the words and the machine will speak out the words electtronically, and the guy put a black microphone-looking thing to his throat. We got to try it out and I'm amazed at how technology is able to enhance the lives of those of us who are disabled. (I have 3 disabilities myself). This was about 15 years ago that I was shown this device, the guy was an ex-smoker who smoked so much that he lost his voice, so just imagine what good stuff they have out there on the market today.
In the mean time, I will pray to G-d that He'll restore your voice and give you peace in your heart at the same time. Blessings and keep up the courage and faith. I'll add u as a friend to my Youtube, okay? I'm velizabethwhite, that's my youtube name. Take care.

Of course I will pray for you.
I hope this helps. I’ve seen something like this before and was able to help someone with a similar kind of speech problem (the mental aspects) but it was easier to be in person. My first request would be to ask you to look into my eyes focus and not look away and see my determination, respect and care about your problem. But we can not do that here so I will try to do my best for you.
Frustration
Frustration is the thing you must dispose of.
It will not serve you well. Now!
Focus.
The next thing you can do is to slow down. Speak to someone that has time to listen to you.
Space out your words. Take your time. Find the calm. The calm, the quiet will give you what you need.
I know dear what is bothering you. You are thinking at the time of speech how you can not talk well. But like you said you are getting better with each new day and with time you will improve.
To see if this helps try this if you like , pick your phrases that you think you can handle....then put spaces... in between ...for the.. rest time.. on your part. Although.. this.. will.. slow down ..the paragraph.. it will ..allow.. the phrases.. to flow better.. and.. unlike politicians.. that put in sounds.. try not to add.. any.. if possible ..just the phrases.. or word.
I know you are intelligent and understanding. Like people learning a new language they can sound funny to someone because of their word structure. Do not be thrown off if you speak with someone and they start to grin. I think most people likely are not laughing at you personally, so laugh with them, and you will gain so much more from laughter than frustration.
Maybe, think of your goal to improve your speaking like a new journey where someone like me will admire you from a far and with tears in my eyes not because of pity but because I would not know if I would have the strength to do so well the things you are doing. I want you to achieve your goal with all my heart mylotfriend and sincerely with respect.

Hi Bluedoll. First let me say thank you for your kind care you have given me. I did have to slow down and try to form words. I'm much better now. Almost back to 100 percent normal... although when I start to get stressed or anxious I do start to have problems again. I went to church and stammered something awful... but everyone understood and didn't laugh.

hi pointlessquestions I am so surprised and sad for you as your writing is superb and articulate.you evidently have a speech impediment that embarrasses and sadly getting upset will make it
worse. You need to find a good speech therapist that can help you
to over come the stuttering and stammering. self esteem must be there too. I will pray also for you to get the help you need and overc
ome the problem. I know it must be embarrassing but many good writers have been known to have speech problems so you are not alone at
alone.

Than Hatley. Yes my ability to read, think words and write has not been affected. It's just my ability to speak fluently. It is very embarrassing and frustrating. I don't have a clear memory of how this started. I'm guessing because I can't remember. I had it when I was talking to the bank about the fraud but I could still talk. I think it went full blown that day but don't really remember. I was so tore up that day that I don't remember much.

Thank you. I'm seeing slight improvement today. Some words are coming out clearer. I know that in time I will be back to normal. If I rehearse what I want to say in my head first it comes out better. If I just spontaneously speak it is very messed up.

Have to agree on your bravery (and it's really nice to see you for real... *waves*).
I'm not a praying person but I do remember a BBC documentary about stuttering and speech impediments and the advice that a particular system gave to overcome it: rhythm.
The idea was to try to get past the embarrassment and agitation - which makes it worse - by speaking rhythmically, as if you're reciting poetry. Each syllable on the beat of a regular metronome. The system had incredible success because it did what meditation does: occupied the front of the mind with something simple (the beat), thus freeing the rest of the mind.
I don't know whether it will help you but it may be worth a try. You might feel a bit funny speaking as if you're a rapper on a slow beat but I'm sure it'll be no worse than what you're feeling right now.
Did you find out if it's related to the meds, by the way?

Hi Spike,
The ER Doc, the Hospitalist, and the neurologist all say it’s not the meds. I had the meds in me for too long with no reaction, and then after about 5 weeks I have this speech problem and have been off the meds for several days and still I have this problem. The half life of Neurontin is about 7 to 8 hours.. so that leaves the system fairly quickly. I don’t know about Ultracet… I didn’t look it up, but I only took it as needed for pain anyway…. It wasn’t continually.
The docs all think this is another conversion disorder. I had a conversion reaction every time I went to practice choir when we had new songs to learn. The words kept changing to look like German to me and I couldn’t read or recognize the words. As soon as the session was over, I could read again and sing, but any new song would do this to me, so I finally quit to stop having that. I’ve also had a conversion disorder where my tongue would get thick and the muscles in my lips and tongue wouldn’t cooperate to allow me to speak. I would get this way whenever I was talking about something or trying to explain something. My mind would go blank, and I’d have to tell the person I didn’t have words in my head to continue talking… and my motor ability to speak would just go away…. So the docs think this is just yet another conversion disorder.
Sometimes I'm better than other times and have less problems speaking. If I try to slow down and just speak one word at a time, I can sometimes manage, but not always. I tried tapping on my desk to read your response aloud and I still kept stuttering... some words came out fine but others kept tripping me up... so I think it helped some. I'll keep trying that. Thanks!

Pointless, indeed you are a very brave person, daring to share your problem through Youtube. Hope you will always be a brave person, to overcome your obstacles. Try your best to struggle against those unwanted health problems. It is lucky that you are still able to write and explain very well regarding your speech problem. Don't worry, i will always pray for your good health. Hope one day to hear that you will be fine like usual again. Always have a balanced diet in your daily life.

Thank you. Everyone says it's brave. I just think it is being real. Maybe I'm crazy to bear it all on YouTube and mylot but this is who I am now. No one would guess my speech problem is so profound because my writing is articulate. The best way fir everyone to understand is to hear and see for themselves.
