As I'm sure many of us know, money is hard to come by these days. We're living hand to mouth, as many families are and I'm willing to do almost anything to bring in an extra few € to make things a little easier. I recently decided to put myself out there to folks that I know personally and make myself available to clean their homes. Since then I've already in the last week found 2 families that are willing to have me clean for an hour or two per week. I don't charge much and as a result, they are getting a clean house for a fair price and are helping me to get by with a few extra euro here and there. Those that can provide a service for me in return that saves me money, we exchange skills. Have you got any mutually benficial arrangements with other people?

I don't have any mutually beneficial relationships where finances are concerned right now but I have some great neighbors where we pitch in here and there for one another. I think it's a wonderful aspect to consider in these times to help one another. I thought when things started to get bad with the economy...what do I have to offer a community if that community needed to be self sufficient? To be honest I couldn't think of a thing. One neighbor has a dairy farm and another had a vegetable farm and I would be one to offer labor I guess if it come down to it. The only thing I am good at growing has been a cactus. Oh..I did good at my rose bush last year though. I do clean homes on the side during the slow season at work..but it isn't really steady. Great idea on everyone helping everyone else in rough times!

I collected my first tenner today for doing an hour's cleaning in a friend's house and it was a great feeling. I did something I enjoy doing and am a tenner better off than I was earlier today. I can't grow anything but cacti either Jen, no green fingers here. Potatoes are very easy to grow, I've managed those on my compost heap with no effort, didn't even know it until I went to clean up that area of the garden, perhaps give them a try! I suppose if our community had to become self-sufficient, the only produce I could provide would be quail eggs. We keep 6 hens and a very vocal male here and the eggs are scrumptious!

I followed a course on automechanics for 2 years in evening school. Now every time a a friend or family member has a problem with their car they come to me. It's good for both them and me because I make a bit of money and they don't have to pay the huge amounts a garage would make them pay.

I find the way you go about earning extra is inspiring and practical. To trade skills to do tasks to save money is indeed a way that would be helpful for people who is in a cash-strapped position. If a community is able to organize a board to list the skill and price available so that the people who lives in that neighborhood can utilize and help each other. It is also a way to bring the people in that community closer and be more co-operative. After reading your post, I may just think about what I can offer if I could do like you. Perhaps I can car-wash or mow the lawn...
