tide detergent thefts on the rise

Of all things to steal I guess Tide is a currency on the black market of people with addictions now. There's a man in MN who stole up to 25k in Tide, walking out of stores with carts full of Tide. I can't belive if you use Tide that you may have to ask for it from behind the counter like you would for cigs. http://www.nypost.com/p/news/national/thefts_of_tide_laundry_detergent_ExpyPDdIAtmm6Vc1IEUoCI What do you think of this? I know Tide is expensive which is why I rarely buy it. I can't imagine someone walking out with carts full unnoticed?!?! And for 15 months or more?!?! Which will only cause prices for the people who actually purchase it to rise even further. Here I just thought Tide was the primo of detergents the creme de la creme of detergents to wash clothes in not something to steal or used as an illegal currency. What will they think of stealing next?

Why would people want and/or need to steal Tide? My mom buys it and uses it now and then, but then again, we don't have as much laundry as most people would because there are only two of us. Also, yes, how can you walk out of the store with a lot of Tide? The police or store security would eventually catch you. I know that at some of the stores and malls that I go to they have a lot of top notch security and you can get caught for just about anything.

They are stealing it because you can't trace where it came from so if someone steals it, they sell it on the street for a fraction in the store and use the money to support addictions. They've shown videos of him just walking out with a cart full of detergent, wouldn't anyone notice?

You would think that someone would notice it.

If it has any value, I think there is someone out there that will steal it. It is wild the things that people will steal and resale or trade.

I don't think that there is anything that is available to buy without asking for it that isn't stolen and probably stolen in quantities that are much greater than we would think that they would be stolen. With that said, I would have to think that this person that was that desperate to have that much Tide must have to have a really, really big family because that is a lot of detergent to have, even if you do have a really large family and I can't imagine it being traded for illegal substances.

This is very stupid to do, stealing a thing in a huge quantity and of less value. I think there is more to it. Maybe the person is experiencing depression and that brought him to that action. If it's because of a need, then he will just get a supply or maybe stole money or laptop, or cellphones, etc... things of higher value but smaller items.

Not sure why myLot wouldn't let me post my response except for maybe the use of dollar signs. But why delete the whole thing so that I have to start over again instead of asking me to fix it? I never pay full price for Tide. The store I shop at puts it on sale on a regular basis for 4 dollars off and I usually have a coupon for 1 to 2 dollars off on top of that. I will not pay full price for Tide. The same goes for fabric softener, paper towels and toilet paper. I am trying to think of what would be another desirable item that someone would steal and sell out of the trunk of their car. I guess Tide is a reasonable choice if you think about it. I am not condoning this at all. I am just saying that products that people will always need can be easy to re-sell. There was a time when stereo speakers would be sold out of the back of trucks. Well... who needs stereo speakers these days? Everyone uses ipods and the like. My husband just made some changes to our bills by eliminating some phone and television features. The cost of living keeps going up but paycheques don't.

Well I know from working in a grocery store we can't exactly run after them. The only thing we can do, is if we suspect it of happening inside the store, we provide the best customer service we can. Asking them what they are looking for and being as friendly as possible. Usually they will get nervous and either leave or purchase the items they do have in their buggies. I'm not sure what the deal with Tide is, but I guess it can be used to snort also.

I saw this on the internet this morning! I could not beleive it! People are really shoft lifting Tide! The people who do it resale it for then it is worth! That is crazy! You think you have heard everything and this comes along! People will steal anything just to make some extra bucks and consumers will buy it no matter how much it costs! What next? Your guess is good as mine! With laundry detergents,Tide is not that special! I have tried most of them and none seems to be any different!

I just heard this on the radio today. They are selling it on the black market for a cheaper price. It is definitely odd.

You know, I should be surprised at this kind of behaviour but I ain't. People will steal anything nowadays, they're desperate for anything and will try for anything to get money for their addiction. I also buy cheaper stuff than tide, and it's concentrated and sold in bulk, so I save money that way.

Oh my gosh. This is just weird. Of all the things to steal a detergent?!!! My jaw dropped open while reading this discussion. I think this just shows that the world is really in a crisis and some people are turning weirder and weirder everyday. Maybe next time there would be a toothpick thief.

Hello! Oh man! What is happening in this world? Detergent? now I guess they didn't ahve enough or no money at all. but, that don't give them a reason to go out and steal laundry detergent. tide is very much expensive to buy and I don't buy it. If that's the case why couldn't they use soap or some kind of dish liquid for their clothes, unless they were stealing it for a company. it's still no excuse for that.

I would never have guess that Tide would be such a commodity..I think it's too expensive to use and I think others work just as good....this is totally weird!

I was shocked to hear about this. I guess that it is a money maker though. As the article said there is no way to track it and thieves are even re-selling the product back to other stores. It was pointed out that Tide costs between $15 to $20 a bottle and they are reselling it for $10. They got it for free so that is a nice tidy profit. I cannot believe that one guy stole $25K in Tide though... I wonder how many stores he ripped off to get that much Tide and why they did not stop him? It is wild. As far as what will be stolen next... really there are too many things to count. Dishonest people are bound to steal anything they can get their hands on.
