How to divide or grow from cuttings

I have some walkers low I was thinking of dividing as well as a bleeding heart & maybe even some black eyed susans. My big concerns are when does one divide? Right now the bleeding heart is just starting to emerge from the ground. Do I divide now? Wait til it's a few inches or ? I'm always fearful I'll kill the mother plant and the one I divided it from.
Walkers low I've only had one full season as I bought in on mark down the season before. But I would like to maybe do cuttings but do I need hormones to get it to grow from a cutting or do I just stick a branch in water and see what it does?

I was have a garden , I was have many roses in it , if you has small shrubs planted by seeds you can disperse them , cultivate ,spaces,,, But if large bushes, you can take parts of it and re-planted as a group together , then you can dispersed it after germinate

hi 3snugglebunnies I always divided things in late summer here in California. Cuttings from a lot of perennials grow when just stuck in water. I never used hormones but guess they could help.I have had cuttings from gerainums grow just stick them in good soil lol. I never tried sticking a branch in water but it fascinated me that my grandad had used a big chunk of cottonwood as a fence post. the darned thing sprouted and made a cottonwood tree. lol so funny. the tree is part of the fence now back in South Dakota.

Walkers low catnip? If you want more plants, wait until it goes to seed, then gather them for the next year. It's easy to start from seed. Gather black eyed susan seeds, too. That's the easiest way for those plants.
I don't know about bleeding hearts, but probably now before it starts to grow.

I'm located in California like one of the other posters. I think it depends on your location when to take cuttings, as my weather is warm almost year round. I would suggest looking at books for your area.
