Nowadays it is quite hard to earn for oneself the money required to maintain a decent living. It is all a hectic run over making money at whatever sacrifices one could afford to in gaining sufficiently enough funds to pursue a comfortable existence. LIFE ...it is getting more and more tough ...

I think we have been programed to want more and more all the time. Maybe now is the time for all of us to unclutter our lives, eat less and more simple foods, just turn our attention to living the best we can with what we have, not always wanting more. Do we really need what we think we need? This is a big question to ask yourself. No matter what I do my income is not increasing, sure I get more money in, but as soon as I do more money is taken out of our pension checks, so really I am living on less. For those who have no steady income it is even more difficult, we tell them to eat right, but often fast food specials are all that they can afford and that may only be once in awhile, the rest of the time they eat were they can. Sure they can get used cloths, but even those cost money.
If anything the world is becoming more and more difficult to live in.

Hi savypat,
I agree about asking ourselves if we really need what we want to have or all of them are luxuries. I quit smoking some years ago when I discovered that I could not smoke AND have vacations. And we buy all sorts of gadgets we don´t really need. I have more than my share at my kitchen, but most of them are gifts because my friends and family know I like to cook. But I need a normal pot to make the best rice and would not use a special one.

Well, it depends on what you think of as a decent living.
Here in the U.S. people think a decent life includes air conditioning, a big screen TV, cable television service, a car, and other things that aren't essential to basic living. They think they are poor if they don't have a cell phone, new clothing every few months and the ability to go to the movie theater to see the latest productions. Those with just the basics of shelter and food are considered the poorest of the poor.
If you take the attitude that food and shelter are a decent living you might find that you suddenly have more money than you thought. I live very simply and many people would say I live like a poor person but I am happy and when my son's car broke down and he was in danger of losing his job because of it I was able to help him out financially. To me, that is wealth and I am rich.

I agree with you, dragon. In my country, many people get into debt because they "can´t live without" a lot of the items you mentioned. I have a small TV in my room (the only one), an old computer, the simplest cellphone for emergencies (prepaid) and some of my clothes are 20 years old. Yet I consider myself rich. I have good food (gourmet in fact, as I´m a very good cook), a beautiful house and a lovely garden (made by my own hands). I´m glad I like to read because if I´m bored an don´t have money, I can always get a book at a library, borrow one from friends or buy one at a second hand shop.

You are wise, Marguicha, and therefore you are wealthy.

I really think that this depends on the standards that we have set for ourselves. I'm not going to go to the extent of saying that our family has not had our fair share of struggles, but we have had the opportunity to learn from mistakes that we made in the past and because of that we've learned to live within our means and that is something that will make things a lot easier for us in a few months.
We have two cars that are paid for, a house that we are paying on and our credit card debt from the past. The credit cards will be knocked out soon, so we will only be in debt for the cost of our house.

I agree that it is generally hard to earn money, but ..
Isn't "decent living" thing that really subjective?
It will depends on each person's point of view.
In my opinion,, by the time you can't have things that you want, and then you can act like you want (being grateful with) things that you have, I think it's already a decent living ..

It'[s just my husband and I, and we are both on a low income. If we want to do something, we save for as long as we think we need to, without having to sacrifice too much of the money we need for eveyday expenses. For example, in two weeks, we are going to Montreal on a short vacation. The train tickets are paid for because we got a group discount, since we're traveling with my parents. Our rom is paid for because of air miles.

Being simple and practical nowadays can be a good idea for us to cope up with these economical problem we have all over the world. I always contended of what I have now since I know how hard to have a daughter who are still in need for her study. I always pray that even though I don't have so much money in hand as long we are safe and always have a good health, life is more easier for me.

I'm in the same trouble. I have a full time work that ends in two month and I make 1200 euro a month but it's not enought to have a decent life. I have to calculate every month to not get in trouble and have engought to eat. So when I have some oppornity to make more I take it, its sometimes hard because I'm doing a lot of work. And I think that in the future it will not be easier
