Mosquito in my Ears!

Pest control, of sorts. Here in Ireland, they now use a 'mosquito' to deter teens and degenerates from loitering in areas such as the entrances to shopping malls. Most people can't hear this any more when they reach their early 20s, but your are certainly not supposed to be able to hear it by the time you hit 25. It's all dependent on the pitch. I'm 27 years of age and still hear the horrible, piercing sound in my ears every time I go to the shopping mall or the cinema in the nearest large town to here. It's awful! I've a right mind to complain that adult visitors have to be plagued by this noise. I couldn't even pop out for a smoke in the area as the noise was unbearable! How about you? Have you ever heard of this? Have you heard the noise? How old are you (or what age range are you in)?

We don't have those in my country. Sounds like a good invention. I think the idea behind it is that with age the part of the internal ear that makes us hear high sound deteriorates with age. I saw a study where they showed the difference between the way a teenager hears a subway train and an elderly. The difference was quite large. What i'm trying to say is that if that sounds were made for teenagers and you still hear them you should feel good, you should feel younger.

True, I should indeed feel awesome that I can still hear it, but it's so horrible that I wish I couldn't. The thing is, my hearing isn't great, especially in my left ear, yet I can still hear that perfectly. It's probably pitch based and I just haven't damaged that part of my ear enough lol. That sounds like an interesting study. I can't imagine what it'll be like when I'm older and hearing gets worse. My other half's hearing is very bad when there is background noise, even if it's fairly low, it can get tiring repeating ourselves to each other!

I have never heard of this! I will definitely have to look this one up. Sounds like one of those silent whistle things they use for dogs except for teens?

That's almost exactly what it is Jen! It's a loud, high pitched squeal/whistle played continuously and it is so incredibly irritating. It is very unpleasant altogether and can see exactly why it works. I just wish that I couldn't hear it!

Hi friend! Do you mean to say that teens all have their ears impaired from being "plugged" to music all day long? I hadn´t thought of that. I´m old enough to listen to the bell when in the shower and yell to others if they are deaf that they don´t answer. That is, when I´m not alone. I´m at that awesome age where I pay less for public transportation and have to wait for the elevator because my knees give in

I am in my fifties and my hearing is still excellent. I have never heard about the noise in public places that you describe but I have an annoying buzzing noise in my bedroom , it comes from a control box for our internet and phone lines. It so annoying that I must sleep with ear plugs.

I'm the type of sleeper who sleeps through a smoke alarm, so something like that wouldn't bother me at all.
