Serious Bookkeeping Problems

As many of you know, I have a home business that involves selling and shipping books. So I'm trying to do my taxes, thinking all those sale receipts I've been entering into Quickbooks will help me figure out my taxes easily by totaling those sales and categorizing them. Wrong. There are some big errors somewhere. This year the credit card processors are sending 1099's and they say they processed double my recorded sales for everything, yet I know I entered those sales figures religiously. Now i have to double check all my sales for the year against my credit card processor's records. Normally I just record their fees in my bank records. This will take days to figure out. Right now I hate QuickBooks, my processor, and the IRS, and just want to scream. I had plans for tomorrow night, and I want to celebrate Easter on Sunday. Now I don't know what I'll be able to do because I don't know how long all this will take. I know I'm not cheating, so I can't figure out how these amounts can be so far off. I guess I just need to vent and ask those of you who pray to pray that I'll get this mess straightened out by April 14 -- the day I want to be done with taxes.

You always need to still keep a paper record in a financial ledger. But you might need a good program with a real good ledger to keep track of everything for you. I know when I used to write everything down in my ledger I never had a problem. I even found mistakes the bank made. I do hope you did get it all figured out by now. And I know how time consuming it could be. I used to go crazy when I found a discrepancy even for a penny. I would spend hours looking for it. Sometimes it was my error and sometimes it was the banks error. I liked when it all worked out perfectly.

I am glad that you found the mistake and save yourself hours of work. I could imagine she would be unpopular finding cooked books. And usually the chefs are the higher ups. She sounds like an honest human being. I see things that way. I cannot cheat on anything because it bothers me. And if I find a mistake, I always tell someone.

What a horrid thing to happen close to the most important day of the year for a Christian! I hope you get it straightened out quickly. Can you afford to take it to a tax specialist, maybe an independent that will charge less? Or get a couple of friends together and divide up the fiscal quarters to check, make a little party of it?
It is probably the IRS' or credit cards' fault anyway. It is ridiculous that we have to jump through to many hoops just to keep the thugs at the IRS off our backs, and IRS that never gives anyone the same answer twice when they call for help because even they can't make sense of the tax laws.
Get some help. The tension and aggravation you save will make any price worth it. Then find a way of bookkeeping that will avoid this next year. Good luck and have a blessed Easter!

How wonderful! You made a new friend and I'm sure her prayers had a big hand in your eyes being opened. I truly believe in prayer. I'm so glad things worked out for you and that you got that order, too!

Fortunately at the park Saturday morning, I got into a conversation with another woman I met there. Turns out she was a Christian and we talked about this tax issue, since I had almost determined not to go to an art show that night because of the tax problem. But I saw that I might be able to help her meet people who might be important to her business if we both went to the art show. When I mentioned that taxes as the only obstacle to my attending, she prayed right then and there that the Lord would show me the problem. In the light of that, we both went to the show and had a delightful evening, and I decided to believe the Lord would work it out and so I went to church Sunday morning and out for a walk with my husband in the afternoon. Got a $300 order yesterday I badly needed and so I processed and shipped it out. Last night I took another look at everything and discovered I'd been so tired when I added up the two 1099 forms I'd copied one of the numbers wrong. When I added them again with the right numbers, everything matched the Quickbooks figures. I felt very stupid, but I was much relieved. Sometimes it's better to take a break and come back fresh to a problem to see it in a new light. It helps us get rid of something that may be stuck in our head erroneously. Now I can go on with no more time wasted.

The prayers were answered. I made a silly mistake in the way I read and wrote the figures on the 1099 form. I shouldn't work when I'm so tired. I pushed the whole thing out of my mind on Easter weekend and when I looked at it again this morning, I double-checked those numbers and my eyes were opened and I saw my mistake immediately. What a relief.

I can sympathize as in the past I have experienced that sort of thing. The good news is that although you want it straightened out in time, there are two mitigating factors, first that the deadline is actually April 17th this year, I think, and that you can always get an extension. You probably started your work months ago, but probably next year you will start even earlier. But for now, just know that it will feel SO good when you get it done. Good luck!!!

For sure it will feel good when I get it done. I took the weekend off, and when I came back with a renewed and relaxed mind last night, I saw I'd made a silly mistake in adding the total for the 1099 forms. So they were correct and the new total matched my Quickbooks figures. Every year I say I will start earlier, and every year something comes up to keep me occupied those first three months of the year. I'm glad I didn't waste any more time double checking the sales receipts because it was hurting my neck and shoulder to keep matching the computer screent to the results sitting on my deck. It should go smoothly from now on.

I hope that you got everything straightened out and those taxes filed. It can be a real mess. It usually looks real good up until the point your have to sort it all out...at least that is always the way stuff is for me..lol.
Take care and I hope it went well.

Thanks, Jen. I didn't get the bank downloading straightened out. I've given up on it. But I did get the taxes filed on time.

I think that this is one of the reasons that I'm pretty happy with the fact that our taxes (along with my mother's and my sister's taxes) are all really easy to get done. You see, I started doing taxes on paper when I was just fourteen years old and I've been doing them since then. Now, I use turbotax to do taxes and it really saves me a lot of time. However, I don't think that I would be able to do business taxes, I would have to hire an accountant to do that for me.

I'm using TurboTax, and doing a Schedule C is no harder than getting it organized to take to an accountant. My problem was one of simple addition to get a total for the two 1099 forms. Now that I've got that right, everything matchs my books. What a relief not to have to start over!

I hope you can get it figured out. This is why I don't have a business of my own I worry so much about figuring out taxes. I even worry about this if I was to do well on etsy how do I claim, what do I claim, what my expenses are ect. I don't know anything about anything! GL!

Actually, with TurboTax it isn't any more difficult to do the taxes than if you got everything ready for the accountant to do them. It leads you easily through the process. The problem turned out to be the way I misread the 1099 forms, so I copied and added a wrong number. Once I found the mistake last night, I thanked God I hadn't ruined my weekend on it. A lot of prayers were answered, and I'm very thankful. Now all I have to do is continue with what I had started instead of having to redo everything.

Estimate your taxes and get an extention. Make sure you pay anything you think you owe. Over pay if you can. For 2012 make sure you check your credit card each month. I know accounting is a pain but if you have your own business there is no way around it unless you can have some else do your bookkeeping.

Fortunately I found my mistake last night after resting my mind and enjoying the weekend. Coming back to the problem last night with a relaxed mind helped me focus and see that I'd made a stupid mistake adding the figures on the two 1099 forms. Once I did it correctly, everything matched my records.

I would encourage you to take a break from it all and enjoy your weekend.
Allow yourself to feel some peace knowing that it will all fall into place. After Sunday you can consider spending some time on it again.
If necessary...maybe you can contact a professional and pay them to help you sort it all out. Good luck with it and Happy Easter!

Wow, I wasn't getting any notifications this weekend, so I'm a bit late in responding. AS it turned out, I took your advice anyway, before getting it, and I had a great Easter. Then, last night, I discovered that it was I that made the stupid mistake. I'm getting somewhat dyslexic as I get older, and I'd written one of the figures on the 1099 wrong before adding it to the other one. Many people had also prayed that I would be able to find the mistake before wasting time doing unnecessary work, so their prayers were also answered. I feel very sheepish now, but also very grateful.
