Elliot (Christopher Meloni) leaving the show

I don't watch this show very much but today I got to thinking and wanted to know if any of the mylotters could tell me the answer to my question. What did or is the show doing to give reason for his leaving? I've not been keeping up with it so may need some backstory as well.

His character was involved in a shooting and was put on administrative leave. He then quit the police force.
The reality was that Meloni was in the process of negotiating a new contract for the show and everything seemed to be going well until a blow up occurred and he quit the show.
