What do You Use For Mulching?

We have 2 big trees in our property and from time to time there are fallen twigs around it. On several articles, I read that it is good to put mulch around the tree to prevent weeds from growing around it and preserve moisture. I thought of using the fallen twigs as mulch around our trees. In my other post, I mentioned that I found termites almost 5-6 meters from our property. I am wondering now if mulching around the tree with dead twigs is a good idea. Most of us know that termites feed on wood. Has anyone done this? Is it possible to treat the wood with chemicals to keep termites away from the tree and the mulch? Thanks
