Branded Mango

I had been to the fruit market near the vegetable market in my place, I was surprised to see ‘branded mangoes’, named after film stars and cricket celebrities.
The mango that I bought at 50 rupees a kilogram was selling at 100 to 150 rupees per kilo; but it was given a name; people were buying crazy as if the mango came from garden of the film star or cricket stars.
In my city we don’t have much mango trees left because of rapid cutting of trees in the name of industrialization and widening of roads; the mango comes mostly from south India.
They have names; I am told the name comes from the villages they came, their appearance etc.
We are getting ripe mango here since middle of April only, the cost was very high then.
Friends from Philippines sent me mango slice in March; this means mango was available there much earlier.
I know mango grows in hot climate only.
What about your place, do you have mango grown there or it comes from outside, any name for the mangoes?
What is the cost per kilogram?
Please share your experience and comment on this.
Thanks in advance.

I think professor, you have tasted the very sweet and big variety of our mangoes called carabao mango. They are in season now and is everywhere in the market. Although a kilo is a bit costly to me, PhP60.00/kilo and a kilo is 4 big mangoes, because they are mostly grown in Zambales and other provinces.
Here in our province the local mango are the othe varieties, the "piko" and Indian Mango. They are delicious too, but the carabao mango is superb in taste.
I like it ripe but my daughter likes the raw one and would dip it in a salty, small shrimps dip.
And they are so delicious, aren't they professor?

I hate having salt as my dip professor. The salt gets under my denture, making it painful for me to eat!

Mango is something that is always shipped in here because of the fact that we live in a deciduous area. We have a lot of things that will grow here, like apples, pears, strawberries and many of the other berries. However, we don't have a climate that will allow for the growth of any citrus or tropical fruits. This means that we do have to pay more for them on a regular basis because they are flown in.
As far as names on mangoes goes, I actually don't know anything about that.

I just went home from the province and i have seen from the mango trees of my dad that they are still blooming, there are some already bloomed and will be ready by June. We could see mangoes here all year round actually.
