A children shot an intruder

I am a person who always against the use of gun. Because I think that majority of us might misuse the purpose of a firearm when we are in an irrational situation, especially emotionally we are unstable. Today, after I read an article from the internet, I had this dilemma in regarding to in possession of firearm. A 14 - year old boy was staying home with his siblings, a 8 - year old, and a 10 - year old. A lady was knock on the door to ask to borrow a phone, the boy didn't recognize this lady, and refuse to open it. After a moment, there is a man coming to bang on the door, and this boy rush his siblings to a hiding place upstairs. And he took out a shotgun where his father stash it, and this strange man broke into the house and point a gun to the boy, he shot this intruder. Now this intruder is in critical condition, and will be booked in jail after release from the hospital. This boy definitely won't be charged, and he is a hero to protect his family too. So, here is my dilemma, such similar crime might happen day to day, and without the trust on police to help us. Maybe owning one or two firearms, or gun to protect us will be reasonable? What do you think of it? But don't misuse it for revenge or randomly shoot innocent people.
