Burning out, burning up? What should we do about it?

As far as work and life goes, last week was enough to make me feel burned out, and I am just starting a new/old job. The schedule I hired for was M-F 6 am to 9 am. I love early mornings, and I only need a little work to balance the budget. Before I could even begin training they had added Thursday evening from 3-midnight. So I had to train on both of those shifts. I went in Mon. a. m., Monday night, Tuesday night. Training on the computers on Wednesday. Thursday I worked 6-9 then 3- midnight, the Friday 6-9, then left there and went out of town and did product sampling. I did that all weekend, then back up this morning to be in at 6. I asked for some changes, we will see what happens. Add to this type of early burn out the burning weather and I feel really exhausted. We have temperatures in the hundreds and do not expect it to let up any time soon. When I think of friends in various parts of India though, I feel a bit ashamed, because they are much hotter than we are. So what do you do to prevent work burn out and how are you dealing with this summer?

I am unemployed so I don't have to worry about work burnout. As for burning up in the heat, drink lots of cold things, and put cold wet things on your head.
A few days ago I got drenched after a 59-second monsoon, when I was at the bus stop. I hung my clothes in the shower to dry, and they were still damp the next day. I put o my damp clothes, and they really cooled me of in the 30 degree weather. I went outside, and they were completely dry in no time.

I go from being semi unemployed to over employed. I am working on boundaries with this agency. In our heat, damp clothes would just make me feel hot. I run fans at floor level and ceiling fans as well. It is 101 F right now at 9 pm. I have a hot long haired cat draped across my lap.

oh my hot cat on your lap have you ever noticed they are like little heaters in the winter then it feels good to have a hot cat on ones lap but in 100 degree weather no indeed.do drink plenty of cool water, my hubby one time came home with chills on a 100 degree day and we got him to the Er where the doctor said it was heat prostration when you chill. he was hospitalized for two days in which time they realized he had also had a mild heart attack. I used to get dizzy with headaches but drinking plenty of cool water usually chased that all away.so far here we have had a few 85 and 90 degree fahrenheit days but mornings are cooler I have our air conditioner on now and will leave it on til about 4 am or so.Our room faces west so getspretty hot in late afternoon without the air conditioner on,.aslong as it does not get humid here I am okay,.July., aug and sept is when we can get some really hot muggy days with humidity from the Pacific coming in to make your really miserable.

My daughter has a system of moving refrigerator magnets to remind her to drink as she gets headaches when she does not. She has a special glass she uses all day, sets in in plain sight by the refrigerator, which has water built in. Each glass of water moves a magnet.

I am not taking this summer easy at all. I have a compromised immune system and getting up in age and these puts me in a high risk category. As you know people die each year because of heat waves.

Yes, I work in a fragile populace, and they do not always know or pay attention to how they need to care for themselves. I know you are having to do a lot with this move, so try not to over do it.

If you don't want those hours, I would tell them. As hot as it is, I can imagine it wears you out fast. It sounds like you are doing the same type of job as my daughter and they are running her ragged. They would not give her hours and now she is working over 60 a week. I am at home, so in the air most of the time.

I am not a great late night person, and I e mailed the people who are above me giving them a deadline to get me completely off evenings. I can handle working until ten okay, but not really much later. It is not hard work at all, but it has me away from the house. They have backed off having me work Friday mornings when I work Thursday night.

Does India have the humidity we have, tho?
My area of the country is in drought conditions. So, I'm keeping the air on. But it still gets hot in here of the evening when the sun hits the front of the house. Will have to get a fan with next check.
As for work burnout, if you can get it done, a more regular schedule would help. All the same shift. It should settle down after your orientation days are over.

I worked for this particular company before and there are many things I like about it, but they will wring you dry if you let them. I was in a middle management position and quit while on medical leave. I am hoping that they realize that I will leave if they do not get reasonable. I know that at least one of my friends in India has posted about temps that are 44 to 56 C. I know they have a rainy season, and very lush tropical foliage at least in parts, so I imagine they also have humidity.

The greenery around me takes care of that GG. I also have a lush green and packed lawn on my terrace which looks after me when I am in my hall donwnstairs. With 31 windows I actually cannot complain
. Since I do not go out much that the outside weather does not affect me
What do I do when I am burnt out? I just breathe in through my nose and breathe out through my mouth around 5 times, sitting in my favourite place that overlooks my garden. A hot water bath helps me a lot too!

I will continue to be busy this week, but not as much. I will have three days off come the weekend. I picture the trees around your home, when I want to think cool thoughts, I so enjoyed the picture you posted. I have trees, and some shrubs and I am away from the downtown area. I will remember to breathe, and to not let tasks frazzle me.

You know what I do when I don't get sleep. I think of that cozy room in Switzerland up on the mountain with a mattress almost 8" and a warm blanket to match and me cuddled up. These thoughts help me a lot.

Your life sounds like mine right now. But I thrive off working so much, I can't just sit at home and do nothing. I usually sleep, and sleep or just sit at home (I need that time to myself). I use to work days, late evenings, and midnights but got burnt out pretty fast but I had money and not living paycheque to paycheque. The heat makes it even worse I find my afternoon seasonal boss is pretty decent so the other day I worked 3.5 hours instead of 5 - 7 hours as I felt so sick. I try to finish work early and sit outside relaxing. I find during the winter I get depressed and burnt out more as you are cooped up inside I tend to have a load more energy in the summer.

Yes, it is easier to become depressed in the winter due to the lack of sunlight. I used to work lots more hours all the time, but I am more than twice your age and I am slowing down a bit. I am glad you know when you need to take a break. The extra hours here are only temporary I am sure. My hiring just coincided with some other things at this job and the other.

I'm sure with time I wouldn't want to work 3 - 4 jobs especially if I have a family. Sometimes we have to sacrifice things for work or money. I want that happy medium with work and lufe. I'm willing to work, but enjoy the time off but sometimes you simple can't.

I'm just starting two weeks of nonstop every day work schedule with my company. I have a bread route for four days a week-Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Friday. But my company also does grocery resets (for my OLD employer!), so I'm picking up local work at a store remodel two days a week. Then I was sent a message for some new store conversions that are being done and I picked up 3 MORE days. I loved my old job but not happy with what our new supervisor was doing to us (hiring our jobs out to this other company). So I'm getting paid MORE money to work at my old job, I just don't have the health care plan (it sucked anyway) or the 401k. I'm sure I'll get burned out soon but these are only temporary.

It is much better when you know there is an end coming. I am more than half way to a good break now and I have the weekend to look forward to. I have done merchandising and helped with resets. I am also familiar with all the contracting and subcontracting etc. I do sampling events for a company that was paying me differently than the the other one was, but it is all good. I can turn those down if I choose to and my husband can do them and always takes first choice of them. I like that job a lot. My other job is a human services type position where I assist the adult disabled in their homes a few hours each week.

I can really sympathize here.
Blissfully, I have been retired for a few years now, but I remember well many times when work got out of hand. One job I started on swing shift going in to work at 3 and getting out at 11 pm, but after I had been there for a short time they changed to 10-Four meaning we would work from 3 pm until 2 am Monday through Thursday and be off Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Most of the younger people loved that because of the 3 day weekend. But then production went up and we had to work the weekend anyway, and still many of the younger people were happy because they got overtime. Then they started having us work holidays too, and as that paid triple overtime, the kids were ecstatic. But people were getting worn out after months of 10 hr shifts with only 4 days off in a whole year. Instead of being able to save up vacation time to take a vacation we were starting have to take a day off here and there just to get some rest because many of the employees were starting to get sick, which resulted in the rest of us having to work more overtime. Eventually, seeing no end in sight, I simply quit and took a lower paying job somewhere else in order to get part of my life back.

From last Dec. to Feb. I worked full time, at a higher paying agency, doing a floater position, and I had nightmares about it. I would have had nightmares in the situation you describe as well. I do not mind filling in on a holiday from time to time, or even an evening in an emergency, but this last week with training plus my other job was exhausting. I can turn down work at the other job. It pays higher, but I cannot count on getting enough hours. That is why the fifteen hours in the morning was perfect. Just need them to stick to it.

We have an air conditioner/dehumidifier that I stayed pretty glued to for two days. We also went to the movies for a break. Prepared and take cold plates.
I hate swing shifts. A shift you can get used to. But constantly changing the shifts makes it hard.

I am really not much good after ten p.m. and that is why I do not want to even work the one night of late shifts. They are working on getting more people hired. I adapt really well to the morning shift, and my work is inside so it is cool. I will not book so many demos in the future, but I did not realize I would have such a full week before hand. I like your cold plate meals and that is what we are having tonight. The library is an awesome place to hide out as well.

After spending a year in Florida, it is nice to be back to nice, sane temperatures and humidity. Even the heat wave that we briefly experienced wasn't bad as far as I was concerned.
I'm acclimated to this climate. Even if I don't remain in this particular state, I know that I can never again live in the south. I just can't handle the climate and lack of four seasons.
I don't have a full-time job, so I don't experience work burn out. I'm looking for full-time employment or to expand my sales and/or writing to the point where that is my full-time job. However, I simply haven't gotten there yet.

You seem to have a tight schedule in the intense heat of summer.Normally, most people think nothing of M-F 6am-9am ,but can't bear the night shift let alone people at your age.You should strike a balance between work and rest. Here we suffered a drought soon before.Happily a sweet rain fell yesterday, which effected a change in temperature at the same time.

Yes, usually it is the younger people who prefer the late night shift. I have always liked the early day shifts myself. Yes,Being in good health comes first. We have been in the rainy season ,which is different from rainy period in India and other countries, confined in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze river and features intermittent drizzles.Otherwise known as plum rain, because it is just the time when the plum is ripe.

hi dear GardenGerty I guess if you were here work would be much easier for you. It just has started getting warm about a week ago, so far this spring and summwer was rather cool for the season and too rainy as well.
I am a real nightowl soooo working at 6 am would present problems to me as I cant function well at that super early timer of day.
Back to your question about work burnout. One cant always prevent it. It hit me last year cause I was doing quite a lot of overtime to catch up on the mountain of work and that was not only for a week or two but all the time. my boss knows of course I only have a part time contract for 6 hours a day, 30 hours a week but he thought I can fill a fulltime place workwise, obviously.
My doctor set me on meds and also got me out for 5 weeks to recover from the whole frenzy in that place. I am doing much better now thanks to the meds I still take, they help a lot but wont make me depend on them too much so I will not be an addict.
I try to relax on the weekends when there is no work and I also try to have an extra day off per month using my overtime and try to scatter my weeks of a bit evenly throughout the year for a good break.

When I left this company before, I did it while I was on medical leave. I can or could in the past, put up with quite a lot of stress without folding. I am the opposite of you as far as my body clock goes. I function much better in the early morning. My brin turns to mush about 10 pm at the latest.I think it is going to cool off for two or three days this weekend. I think you have planned out how to manage your work time rather well.

i"m glad you were able to get out of the Friday morning gig after being up late working Thursday night. i don't envy you that schedule.
I'm pretty spoiled now, working for myself. Business is bad, but my writing earnings are picking up a bit, so that's good. My office is upstairs, and last year we finally got a swamp cooler because our A/C unit just couldn't keep up with the heat and it would get over 95 up here in summer. This year the swamp cooler keeps it down in the eighties most of the time, or even lower. On days when we're in triple digits, I have to retreat, so I go to the other house that does have A/C. But I can't work there on anything that pays, so I just read or sort things. Gotta rest sometimes.

Your feeling ashamed about complaining about the heat and comparing it to the people in India brings to mind what I have said so many times about our lives. We have the tendency to compare our situation to others and then beat ourselves up because the people we are comparing ourselves to have it much worse. What we tend to forget is that we each are an individual and our reactions are based on how "WE" are handling our situation. It isn't fair to one's self to compare our suffering or problem with that of another. Doing comparisons like that make matters worse for each of us. We will force ourselves to do more because we feel ashamed of our complaining about our situation, which will make the situation worse because we aren't stopping to take the extra time to take care of ourselves out of our shame. I have mentioned my physical problems to a "friend" and each time I mention a problem this friend's problems are ALWAYS worse. I have asthma and she started in that she had COPD. I have the heart problem and she claims to have had several heart attacks (though through an exam there is no evidence of even a small heart attack) and the list could go on. I am not looking for sympathy for the physical problems I have, I continue to do what I can each day. I offered the information because the woman wanted to know. The interesting part of the story is that she doesn't look beyond herself and her problems. She wouldn't consider the fact that there are others suffering more than she ever realized, her focus is on herself. You, sweet lady, have looked beyond yourself and feel the shame that you are suffering but there are others that are suffering more. This makes your suffering worse because you carry the guilt of complaining about your situation. Don't feel badly about complaining about your situation. With your schedule you have earned the right to complain about the heat, schedule and the fatigue. You aren't exaggerating facts about your situation , you are simply stating that you are in a bad situation right now, and are hoping that it will stop soon. I offer prayers that the heat in all areas of the world will let up soon so that we ALL have some relief.
With the schedule that you are dealing with, the stress of training for a new/old job, and the heat mixed in with everything you have every right to grumble. Please don't lay a guilt trip on yourself. Just remember that you are uncomfortable, stressed, and tired and that makes things seem worse. In a few weeks the stress of the new job will abate and with the stress eliminated the heat will be a bit less uncomfortable.
Our temperatures are in the 100's, but we have had a few days where the temperatures are in the 80's which make the hotter temperatures feel even hotter. I send out sympathetic feelings towards everyone who is suffering from the extreme heat. I have been informed that I have to be a bit more careful because of the heat. I am on medications that don't mix with the heat...I've already noticed that with the heat and the medications I get really really (b)itchy; and I don't have the stress that you have. Just take care of yourself, try to keep cool, drink plenty of fluids, and remember that with the job if you make a mistake they can't cook ya and eat ya...

Okay, I am duly noted that I try to be too fair. That is how I end up in this fix anyway. One of my clients has been dealing with a physical problem and being mentally handicapped has not always been able to express it well, so it has translated into apparent grumpiness and unwillingness to eat or take medications, etc. Yet everyone reports to me how often he says he like me being his new staff. He got the problem alleviated yesterday afternoon and things were so much easier today. He had been in quite a bit of pain. Of course the day I wrote this his coffee maker had refused to work ( I goofed up, I think), so I felt badly about that. He had good sleep last night and the pain is pretty well gone so he is cooperative. Coffee was how I usually transitioned him into eating and taking medication. I took a spare pot from home with me this morning.I have to be careful with all the clients I work with because they do take so many meds. I hope you adapt well to this med that is helping you so much. I am going to bed at reasonable hours and napping if I need to. Going to Minnesota, then going right back to work when I got home and all the training plus demos was pretty steep.I always felt like sleeping was a waste of time, but the older I get the more I appreciate it.

We are suppose to reach the 100s by later this week and I am not really looking forward to it. The biggest problem will be Saturday, when we have to drive at least 50 plus miles in a van with no A/C and only the driver's window rolls down..
Yep, it will be miserable, but it is for my nieces grad party, so I am going, but when I get back, I will either jump in our little pool, jump in the lake, or just throw myself in one of our A/C bedrooms..

Freeze up some water bottles as they make a huge relief for hot trips. Put them at the base of your neck if you can handle it. I wish I was near a lake to jump in. We might do that this weekend.

Makes you just want to cover the lawn in pretty gravel and forget it. I had tons of training last week that I had not planned on and that was a big part of the long hours plus I had agreed to do three product events. I have sent an e mail out about the turn around from midnight to six a.m. and gave them a date to get it fixed by, if they do not, I will quit. Mostly I just want to hang on for three more years. Today was a really awesome morning at work. I still have some computer based training to do and will go do it under a lot of a/c

Well I am dealing with summer quite well seeing as it is the middle of winter here and quite cold where I am! It does not get super cold here, but it is too cold for my liking at the moment. I would rather have the heat that you are having.
In regards to work burn out. In the past I would just push myself and keep pushing until I got sick and my body then got to rest and catch up again. These days working from home is a lot easier. I just try and balance everything so that I have time during the week to do something enjoyable in the form of outdoor recreation. I always try to do something relaxing as well like reading a book, watching sport on TV or chatting with you here on this here computer!

MyLot has always been my therapy. I hope we will make it to a lake this weekend for a nice swim. I tend to accept as much as people will throw at me, and I am hoping that I am finally learning how to say "no" to the right people, before I get sick. It is funny, but getting sick seemed to be my pattern to give myself permission to not work. I am eating extra fruits and veggies this week and encouraging my clients to do that and drink extra fluids as well.

Yes. That sounds like me! I have always struggled to say no. Have taken on multiple committee positions at the same time as well as keeping an active social life outside of work and family commitments as well. I still have some committee positions now but not ones which are as time consuming.
Good idea to drink lots of fluids (water, nothing with sugar or caffeine which will dehydrate instead of hydrate) and to eat lots of water rich foods such as fruit and veggies when it is that hot. When we get dehydrated, one of the first signs is tiredness and moodiness and a lack of ability to focus. Drink, drink, drink!
