Mister..My Guinea Pig - This is Mister, my long-haired Peruvian Guinea Pig who is about 5 years old now.
He has soooo much character!! When he wants a carrot I ask him for kisses and he comes to the cage and gives me a kiss!

I own 3 Guinea Pigs. Mister, the male, is a long haired Peruvian. We got him in early 2009. Then in September 2011, I inherited 2 females! These are the most incredible pets, especially for kids! They love their carrots and always "Wee wee wee" when they hear a bag or the fridge open! They also love their spinach, sometimes a bit of banana, and Timothy hay, but I don't find that they like oranges. They respond to their names, love to "popcorn", and give kisses for their carrots! They like to play in the grass outside, but we have 3 hawks living int he area and we really need to watch so they don't attack. They never forget to say "good morning" when I come down the stairs in the morning! We read that you should not take your Pigs on long trips??!!? We drove/moved across Canada and they seem to be just fine. One "problem" I am having is their nails grow sooo fast and curl..it can get expensive to take them to the vet to have them trim them, as I have 3 Pigs. Does anyone trim their Guinea's nails at home? What is the best tool to use? A nail trimmer for dogs? One other question I pose to you...The girls are not very social. Well, one can be, but the other one is just a plain snot! Does not like being touched at all..and now her rear end is getting all matted! Any suggestions as to how to "tame" her?? Look forward to hearing your comments and ideas!!

I have had guinea pigs for many years and now my kids have them. I think they are the best pet for children. There are a couple of problems that are important to point out. They need a diet high in vitamin C or they will die. That, they can get with commercial guinea pig pellets. Another issue is that they can become impacted when they get older. It is something that can literally kill them if not taken care of. There is a lot on the internet on how to clean the impaction out. It isn't hard to do but can be a little messy. But they still are enjoyable to have around and play with.
