I was just reading an article about some of the strange things that people have stolen like a huge inflatable gorilla, a live shark and a hat made from eggs, and it reminded me of a story from my childhood. I was still a small child at that time and my mother wanted to collect all of the trash and take the old magazines etc to the recycling station. She left a bag next to the car and went back to the house to pick up the last things. When she returned to the car the bag was gone - someone had stolen it. I think that the thief got a bit disappointed when she or she opened the bag. I would love to have seen the expression on their face when they opened the bag and discovered that it contained my used diapers What is the strangest thing that people have stolen from you or from someone you know?

Many years ago my husband and I used to have collectible mugs that we would use when we went out in the hot weather. They were insulated to keep things hot or cold, and they held a large amount of beverage but the top was designed so that you could drink directly from them rather than having to use another cup. We stopped at a gas station/convenient store, and my husband pumped the gas while I went inside to get a couple of things. He locked the doors of the truck but forgot and left the back window open, so someone reached in and stole one of the mugs. The funniest part about it was that there was a cellphone right next to the mug and visible change in the cup holder plus a couple of other valuable things, but the only thing taken was the mug - I guess the person must have been really thirsty or something.

A mug thief, I hadn't heard about that before It is strange that the person only stole the mug and left the other valuable things. Maybe the person thought "hey, that mug looks nice, I want it" and grabbed it and ran, or maybe it is mug collector like topffer said

LOL! That is a possibility. I guess in that case he or she was being polite, because there was also another empty mug of a similar type (but not exactly the same) that was visible on the floor, but maybe he or she already had that particular mug in the collection ... or perhaps he or she could not reach far enough into the truck to reach the floor, although I know that the other things would have been within reach.

Maybe the person was also a mug collector, and this one was lacking in his collection.

Yeah, very funny. I'll never forget that! Were all working in a supermarket before and were all of us have the same shoes as required by the supermarket management.

You do hear some funny stories but stealing your rubbish is brilliant. We have a saying {if its not nailed down someone will take it} and it is so true.I heard of people stealing washing machines from showrooms in the old days,to have the gaul to go in pick something up and walk out with it.Nowadays everything in the shops of value over a certain amount is chained down through a long chain and things on the counter are just for show and the stock for sale is kept out the back of the shop.In supermarkets big expensive joints of meat have a special tag on them.If someone takes the meat a siren goes off.Clothes have been ruined by store assistants getting those tags of them.It is a terrible shame we live like that but a few people stop the rest of us leading an honest fruitful life.

We have those tags in country, too. One time the shop assistent had forgotten to remove the tag and it was hard to convince them that we didn't intend to steal Since that time I always double-check the tags before I leave the shop. The valuable things are usually locked away and you have to ask one of the shop assistents if want to buy one of those things. I guess it is neccesary to in order to prevent shoplifting...

Hi porcospino We had a robbery at our house in 1992. We were all away for a few days attending a marriage function. And on return we found the burglary being done. The worst for me was that they took away my two photo albums and the camera. I was a photography freak those days and there were more than 500 of my collection in those two albums. I dont know what use those snaps would have had for them. Then, one of my friends was robbed on a train. To make matters worse he was going for the final interview and as such all his certificates and marksheets which were in original got stolen too. He did give an advert in the newspapers requesting the thief to return at least the originals but I am sure the theives never read newspapers

Hi thesids, Porcospino Your friends experience of losing personal items reminds me of a horror story a cab driver told me. At that time I took the cab to retrieve my identification card from a police station. The cab driver told me how lucky I was to get my IC back because a person could use my IC to borrow money from a loan shark....Yikes!!!

I also imagine the face of the person who stole diapers. I have been burgled last year in February, and I realized several weeks later that they had also stolen the hosepipe that I was using for the plants on my terrace. Last April somebody entered in the garden of a friend with a ladder : they took an old valuable pottery and... the hosepipe. Is it a gang of gardeners ?

It sounds like a gang of burglars interested in gardening. Maybe they will keep stealing and start their own garden when they have enough things It reminds me of a burglar that I read about in the newspaper. He didn't touch the cash, the laptops and jewelry. The only thing he stole was a cheap pair of rubber boots

Just because I am a purple flower does not mean that I (or any of my close relatives) are responsible for the burglaries in your neighborhood, even though aspiring to be a better gardener is an admirable trait.

The toy department was having a sale so i brought my children (I had two then) to shop. I brought my old stroller since the second child still naps in the afternoon. The space where they sold the toys was cramped so I left my stroller at the side of the shop. I put the other things (things to eat) which I bought in the seat and thought nothing of it ... until it got stolen. I still tell this story whenever I have the chance because I cannot believe that the stroller thief would want my old stroller which was really quite disgusting. The seat was full of food stains and the handle was torn and made do with my repairing 'skills' (I held it together with cable ties). I knew it got stolen because the kids and I found our things that we bought earlier left behind in the strollers place. I concluded that the thief had to carry his/her sleeping child so my old stroller must have looked terribly inviting. Although I understand why the thief became desperate I was still quite pissed because he/she had now left me with the possibility of carrying my sleeping child. Although luckily for me my daughter decided not to take her nap that day, now I put a bicycle lock and chain in the new strollers pocket and will lock it to a rail if I had to leave it.

We have a word for that kind of theft, it is called "brugstyveri". I am not sure what it is called in English, but it means the kind of theft where a person steals something (often a car or a bike) because they intend to use it and not because it is valuable. It must have been a person with a child who stole your stroller, but it is a pretty unusual thing to steal. Yes, a bicycle lock is the best way to prevent a situation like that. I remember one time when my former mother-in-law and I went for a walk in town. When we wanted to buy a cup of coffee in a coffeeshop she locked her walker with a bicycle lock and I asked her if that was neccesary and she replied "yes, it is neccesary, because someone stole the last one" I didn't imagine that someone would steal a walker, but I guess you have secure everything with a lock today.

Now that I am older, money isnt always the solution. Sometimes the things that got stolen are things that will cause you inconvenience in its absence. Let me elaborate (yes I like to be long winded) Yes you can replace them by buying new ones but the inconvenience that comes with replacing it. I am sure your former mother-in-law feels that way too. You have to go to the store and get it, etc. BTW I love that your used diapers story, it really serves the thief right!

I think the strangest thing was a large flag of the United States that flew above a late night gas station in town. It was one of the very big flags (I forget the measurements) but the attendant on second shift was responsible for taking it down at night and he left it up.... Well someone come along and stole it after the second shift attendant closed up the station and went home for the night. Of course there are always people (mainly kids) who will steal road signs and such as well.

I think that is a large flag is a strange thing to steal. I understand that some people steal valuable things or things that they can sell, but I don't think it is easy to find someone who wants to buy a large flag. It could have been some children or teenagers who were bored or challenged eachother to steal the flag or maybe a tourist from another country who wanted a souvenir from the US I don't think that people have stolen flags from my island, but the the road signs disappear every once in while. I am not sure who steals them, but it could be some children or maybe people who are drunk.

Hi Porco, i am sure that person would be very disappointed when discovered that the bag they stole is only contained dirty diapers. It is terrible that some people tends to like to steal whatever things that they can get the chance to. There is a time, where one of my sisters had lost her bag containing plastic wrappers which she had bought from the nearby shop, while traveling in a bus. She was putting the bag nearby to her recycle bag on the bus floor. The person who steal her bag must had thought that she put her purse in that bag. Luckily that my sister is putting her purse in the recycle bag instead of another bag. I am waiting to hear more from you soon. Take care always...

Yes, someone must have gotten very disappointed when she or he found a bunch of dirty diapers instead of something valuable. I was a small child at that time so I don't remember the incident, but my mother has told me about it. It was very lucky that your sister didn't but her purse in the bag that was stolen. I am sure that the thief was expecting to find something valuable in the bag. My former mother-in-law once experienced a similar thing when she was using public transportation. Someone stole her bag, but unfortunately she had placed her purse in the bag so she also lost her purse. I will write you an email soon

Hello Porcospino That is a funny story. I bet that your mom got a good laugh out of that. Some years ago a friend of mine had taken out a fiberglass shower enclosure from his comfort room because he was doing some remodeling and had decided to update the shower enclosure. He placed the old shower enclosure on the curb with a sign that said, "Free." It sat there for nearly two weeks. He didn't know what he was going to do about it and was making plans to have it hauled off when I suggested that he put a sign on it that said, "$50.00" He did this and the next morning it was gone. Stolen. The only other thing I can think of is that I once went fishing and caught several fish that I placed in a red cooler. It was a brand new cooler and looked quite nice. I took the fish home and right when I arrived at the house, I was called away to hospital for an emergency. I placed the cooler of fish out of the vehicle and left it in the yard. Frankly, due to unforeseen circumstances, I forgot all about the fish for several days. After about a week, I noticed the cooler in the yard. I felt really bad that I wasted these fish -- I had planned to eat them. The very idea of catching them and not eating them doesn't sit well with me. However, by this time, these fish had been sitting in the cooler in the hot Georgia summer son for a week. There was no way I could eat them. Furthermore, there was no way I was going to even open the cooler. I decided to take the entire cooler to the dump the next day. I placed the cooler at the end of the driveway so that I wouldn't forget them when I left in the morning. Well, next morning the cooler was gone. I didn't even notice until later that afternoon I remembered that I had set it out. I went back to the end of the driveway to check, and sure enough, the cooler was gone. I laughed all evening as I thought about the surprise that the thief got when s/he opened the cooler. I so hoped that they opened it in their car, as I'm sure the stench stayed with them for many days. Peace.

Yes, my mother thought that is very funny. I don't remember the incident, but my mother has told me the story. That thief must have gotten very disappointed! The story about the cooler made me laugh. I can easily imagine the situation where the thief opens the cooler and finds the fish. I am sure that he or she wasn't happy when they discovered what they had stolen I also enjoyed the story about your friend. It is funny that no one wanted the shower enclosure when it was free, and when it was for sale it suddenly became interesting. We tried the same thing when we had a garage sale. No one wanted the free things, but we changed the sign and asked people to pay $5 they suddenly got interested.
