Re-adjusting to student life

As some of you may already know, I have gone back to studying in a university. I have stopped studying for a year and the years before that, I entered school just for the sake of attending and couldn't really consider it as studying at all, but now it's all different. I was given the chance to enroll again and possibly the last chance at it, with the understanding that I am not to fail any subject at all. So now, I am having a hard time re-adjusting myself to the situation. I mean I haven't been to school for a year and haven't really been serious about my subjects the year before that so you could imagine how much coping up I need. I have to refresh my mind of old lessons and for that I have to review extensively on some previous subjects I have taken. I also have to adjust my current living situation to my school life needs. I have to do this and that, and somehow I feel like I might not be able to but I must. So here I am re-adjusting to this familiar life, wondering if some people here are just having as much "fun" as I am. So, tell me about it.

Be brave and try to take every opportunity that you can to meet new people. Make sure that you get involved in activities that interest you like sport, music, societies or volunteering and try to do as much as you can in freshers week. This way you will meet like-minded people while also having fun. It can be helpful to keep in regular contact with friends and family back home by phone and email. They will know you best and you may find it easier to share with them how you are feeling in the first few weeks.

It's so nice of you to give this very helpful advices. Thank you! I did that before and I did get good results but this time I am planning more on just focusing on studies alone without the extracurricular activities involve in school because I want to use whatever free time I could get to do other stuff I can squeeze in my schedule aside from reviewing. I am still in the process of pushing myself to spend longer hours in reviewing. It's very hard after being so lax for a long time. I just hope that I can do this and sooner than it seems. Once again, thank you and all the best for you as well!

Hi friend, good to hear that your are going back to school again and readjust yourself based on the situation. I think you are a practical person, we must have this spirit and readjust our selves based on the situation to live our life happily, there is nothing wrong in compromising. All the best for your studies

Re-adjusting is sure hard but i know you can do it. I am proud of you, your willingness and hard work will repay you in the future. I encountered this situation before, like you really really need to sacrifice and work hard for you to become successful. I hope your willingness will stay and we do believe that you can do it. It will be hard first like you need to sacrifice what you used to do, time management is really a must. Good luck and God bless choybel.

It can be very hard to get back in the swing of things with regards to your life as a student. However, it is certainly not impossible, and you will get into the habit of learning how to work as a student again. I know that when I started the hardest thing that I had to cope with was the fact that there was nobody telling me when I had to do my work as there would have been if I'd had a manager or something like that, and this meant that I had to decide when to meet my own deadlines. Once I got the hang of this, it was as though I'd never left school in the first place, so you will probably be the same once you get back into it again.

I am actually feeling it right now. I feel the familiar stress and most of the familiar things any other students went through or are going through. I think I'm starting to get back, but not entirely yet. I know I will, I should. Anyway, thank you very much for sharing.

I'm happy for you my friend. Since you have given yourself a chance to finish your studies I guess you are more determined now. As you have said, you have done that years before only for the sake of attending. Yes, it could be hard for you at first adjusting to student life especially recalling what you have learned before. It will like, your just starting.Anyway, I wish you all the best.

It definitely feels like starting again but I am now getting the hang of it. Hopefully in a few more weeks I would gain back my self-confidence and be able to do good in school. Thank you for your input and support. All the best for you as well, my friend!

I'm having a hard time adjusting with my school life as well, although our circumstances may differ for I have never stopped or skipped a year. My previous years, although quite challenging is not as hard as this current sem I'm in. There were drastic changes, in schedule and learning techniques. I'm kinda pressured this year, I guess because I've never liked participating in extracurricular activities when I started college (I'm so beat up with those way back in high school and elementary) but now I was assigned in an organization and is currently running for a position in the Student Council. I kinda accepted the fact that I'll have to help my fellow students who belong in the same society, but I don't like to get involved in a wide range government such as the Student Council, it's too troublesome. Ugh. But my schoolmates had nominated me so I had no choice but to do it. Darn. Yeah..I guess we're both having so much FUN. *sigh*

Sounds to me like you are living the dream. To be honest, I'd choose your situation over mine anytime of the day. I think that you have a good heart and mind for your classmates to elect you to a position so I really believe that you'll have no problem at all. It's going to be a tough school year so best of luck to us! Thanks for sharing.

I actually stopped schooling too after i gave birth to our first child, that was in 2005.. i had to stop for a year because i had to adjust myself, it was a big transition from a life full of happy go lucky decisions, then to motherhood. It was hard, when it was time for enrollment again, i was so apprehensive, i do not know what to do actually. But i had that desire to finish it all.. so i did go back school year 2005 and tried my best to finish it and i did. I know what you mean of adjusting it, it was harder for me as my mind kept on wandering to my child, my mom was looking after her that time and i tell you it was not easy as my mom is not the easiest to deal with. so i had to juggle the time, go back and forth the school as my schedule was not straight, i had classes in the morning and then later in the afternoon. I could see students who look like they were just having fun, messing around and here i am trying to put it all back together, getting good grades, i even thought i would fail but well i still aced all of it. then i met someone who was in the same position as i was, she was also a mom like me in school trying to finish it and the good thing was that she was in the same course as i am, so it was easier knowing someone who was in the same boat.. anyways you can do it choy, just take it one step at a time and this time do not fail. ok?

Failing is certainly not an option for me this semester. Thanks for the inspiring story of your experience! I never actually gave up hope in studying, but I am starting to feel the stress.

It was very hard for me to get readjusted to going back to school after so long too. You can do it though. I believe in you. Now that I have been in it for a while, I dread the vacations from it sometimes because I am afraid that I will lose my edge. I do have to say that it is a lot more important to me now than it was when I was younger. I wished I had wanted it as much then as I do now...lol. It will take a little time but I am sure you will adjust well. Take care.

I have my share of regrets, wishing I had made better rather than wasting so much opportunities and time, but I guess that's all part of my learning now. Anyway, I haven't really adjusted so much yet but I hope I get to it soon. Good luck to us and to the rest that share the same fate!

Hello Choybel, Its a good news that you've decided to continue your studies. You are very lucky since not all young people have the chance to do so. I know it the same boring old lines, but education is very important. It will be you pride someday. I know not all people love school, and there are so many valid reasons why. And I admire you for your effort in able for you to work it out. By the way, what are you taking up? It's a good idea that you are reviewing all your past school works, I know it will a bit hard but, with determination and perseverance, its rest assured that you're going to make it. I guess you just have to handle things right. Friends / Classmates are always there to help you out. Not just with your studies but also to help you unwind if ever you are stressed up. It's all up to you on how you'll make it enjoyable as possible. Good luck!

Thank you for your inspiring messages. I am taking up B.S. Civil Engineering. Most of my friends and batch mates have already graduated and the ones that are left are all ahead of me so basically all my classmates now are fresh faces. I am not the type that usually befriends people right on and don't usually initiate it. I do hope, however that I could make new friends because they indeed help make the load a little lighter. Once again, thanks!

I remember that when I go back to college, I spent the year before doing nothing, so, imagine how difficult it was for me to start to wake up early again and need to study for test and things like that. I have to say that even after a couple of years, I'm still not adjusted to this life!

Kudos to you for your determination in returning to school and in sticking with it this time around, choybel! You CAN do this and you will do it. As you say, it will take some readjusting, but you will find your groove and you will adapt. Peace
