…updating drivers and installing (and reinstalling them is hell).

I am no computer expert and this week has been particularly hellish. It turns out that my computer freezes are due to outdated drivers. That came along after consistently checking hard disk drives and Os. After figuring out the problem, I had a hard time, locating driver updates and installing them. As I said, I am quite a novice in this. Please confirm that what I am doing is correct. I do uninstall the driver form Device Manager, restart and install the new driver. Then, the software insist that I restart again. I just hope I do not encounter another error message. I hope this works for the SATA controller because it is driving me crazy. I hope that the constant rebooting and updating won't ruin my hard disk. I can't stead anotehr computer component going nuts.

Usually to update drivers you don't have to un-install the existing driver first. There are some exceptions to this, and usually the installation routine would tell you that the old driver must first be un-installed, or it will do it on its own. When you say SATA controller though, it sounds like you need to update/re-install your motherboard or chipset drivers. Unless you have a separate add-in card on the PCI bus for SATA, those controllers are on the motherboard. I build my own machines, and the chipset or motherboard drivers are the first thing that gets installed after the OS. I would check with your computer or motherboard vendor and see if there is an updated driver package for the motherboard/chipset first, that may solve all of your problems. One word of caution, avoid BIOS updates. Unless you have a specific reason to update the BIOS of the motherboard, it is best to leave it alone. A failed or incomplete BIOS upgrade can leave you with an expensive paperweight.

nVidia N-Force is indeed a chipset on the motherboard. Hopefully that will solve all of your issues. Please keep me updated and if you need anything else, just let me know. I am used to doing forum based support, so this is no problem for me.

Hi. I am taking you on your offer. I decide to go to NVidia website and download the latest Nforce Driver that there is (which turns out to be the Nforce 9 series). According to the fine print, it supports my former driver the GeForce 8200M G. I’m gonna try to install this and see what will happen.

Hi there, That's a good place to start. If it doesn't work I would like to know what kind of "freezes" you were getting. Was the system failing to respond to inputs from the keyboard or mouse, or were you getting blue-screen errors that forced you to re-boot? The reason I ask is usually something precipitates corruption like that, either a failed software install, a new piece of hardware is not properly recognized, or an existing piece of hardware is failing. My one desktop downstairs is over 5 years old, so I use it for file storage mostly, but you can still sit at it and operate it with no problem. I have never done any upgrades to it's drivers except for Windows updates, and it stays on 24/7.

Sounds like you are doing it right but if you have to update them all I believe you could restart later when everything is done, at least that's how I do it. I believe you do have the option to restart later after installation right, so I choose that and install everything possible first so that I only reboot once or twice. good luck on this and I hope you get your problem solved.

I do hope that this gets resolved soon. This adds of having pressure on my work and other commitments. I am ready to do drastic measures (probably a reformat if that is eve applicable) after being consigned with this situation for days. I cannot count how many programs I downloaded and need to erase. Also, I also have pending problem with my Word application and interest browser. I guess I got hit my Murphy’s Law. Thank for the support!

I did downloaded the latest driver from the manufacturer and until seems to be doing the trick. I also don’t want to reformat it since I am in the middle of work and my sibling uses our external hard drive. I also downloaded a specific driver program to check things form time to time. Thanks for the tips and support!
