We had bought a wooden bunkbed abt 5yrs ago with a full on the bottom a twin on the top. Well during the past 6months or so the same slat kept breaking, and I noticed a crack in one of the support rails. Well the other day that support rail finally broke. So we are going to scour the outlet store to see if we can find a replacement bunk bed. The top bunk is fine it's the bottom. This time around hubby thinks we should go with metal and to an actual furniture store. However what he fails to realize is an actual furniture store when we looked last ran several thousand dollars. We paid about $400 for the last one.

The thing that I would suggest to do would be to see if there is a way that the support rail on the set of bunk beds can be replaced. If it was a wooden support that broke, then I would see if there is a way that you can replace the broken wooden rail with the metal rails for a full-sized bed. If that isn't possible, you might be able to find something that will repair it at a hardware store. In addition to that, I would suggest using a bunkie board as opposed to using slats on the bed as well.

I think I would look for a good second hand bunk bed. I've had wooden bunk beds and they lasted for years. As a matter of fact I still have the bottom to one that I bought from a motel when they switched over... about 40 years ago. I have no idea how old it is, but it's still in one piece. I painted it and it looks pretty good, too! Finding quality wood products any more is almost impossible. Even the expensive ones are not the same quality as the run of the mill wooden ones from years ago. They grow the trees too fast and the wood has no strength.

Things are not built to last anymore! I know they say that appliances are built to last only 7 years! Remember the good old days when things lasted forever? I miss those days. I hope you can find a replacement that is reasonable!

Well, you could improvise and not spend hardly anything. Get a piece of plywood the size of the mattress and mount it atop concrete blocks, one at each corner and at least two supporting the middle. Make a bed skirt to hide the blocks and place it where the bed used to be, under the top bunk. You'll probably spend less than $30 and the bed will last a couple more years. One of my boys had a similar bed and it was VERY expensive! The mattress on the bottom quickly became mushy and he got backaches from it. I used plywood to firm it up and that solved it. The bed never broke down like yours but I think it was poorly designed and not an ideal sleeping place.

The metal bunk beds my BIL bought for his boys a few months ago are falling apart. Sad as he spent almost a grand on each. The screws are stripped and the bars are bending in a few places. Have you tried Haystack.com?

Growing up we had a metal bunkbed. Well it was wooden but also supported by oddly shaped metal slats so to speak. We still had to support it some with 2x4 after it started to give way, but that bed lasted for many many years. It was first, I believe, my uncle's and brother's bed. Then it became my sister's and brother's bed. Heck it might've been my momma's and aunt's bed first. Either way, it lasted for a very long time. If you can find one like that, that would be great I think!

My suggestion is go to store and find what is the better one even high price but the quality is the main thing. Unlike you will purchase a sub-standard one but after 2-3 months broke again so the same as you purchase a good one which take last. Like what we purchased more than years ago a double deck steel structure bed which we purchase in a good price. Imagine more than 10 years is good enough and still using now.
