One of my part time jobs is product sampling in grocery stores. It seems like there is always a fly that finds me after an hour or so. Even if I am in the back of the store like I was today. I had a newspaper circular, and I kept fanning to make it go away. I contemplated mashing it if I could swat it, but that seems kind of gross around food. By the end of the day there were actually two of these guys buzzing and flying around. I am not sure which would be worse, to hit them, or just let them walk all over stuff. What do you think? Do you ever notice flies in grocery stores, or do they just love me? They seem to find me, even if the weather is cold.

very few flies I've seen in our grocery store. One I swear followed my from home. Swatting it away is more sanitary, and people are used to flies being on their food especially in spring and summer months. Those who might've seen you successfully squash it could have raised cane, so i think you did the right thing.. no matter how tempting it must've been to squash it lol

I also think that some stores have lots of flies than the other stores. I think the stores, which contains food and other items not covered well have more flies than the other places. I think hygiene and cleanliness do play roles in increase in the flies and other things.

I was giving out pop and of course that would attract them. I was surprised they were going around the olive bar, which had lots of vinegar, oil and herbs. Not on the food, though, just on the equipment. I was in the deli, but they keep the food covered there or in glass cases.

If the place is properly disinfected prior to keeping the stuff, there should be no reason for flies to hover around. The sweetmeat shops that I visit are normally fly free.

It is not really possible to keep the flies all out. These stores are huge, and the "bug zappers are only near the front of the store. Trucks unload in the back. The only time I ever notice flies in the store is if I am standing still in one spot giving away the food samples, so I figure they like the fact that I am standing still and they can land. I do not think it is really every time I do product demos, but it just really stands out in my mind because I would like to help them be rid of them.

The place is properly cleaned. I think these came in the back when a truck unloaded or something. I perspire a lot and I am sure that makes a difference, as well as the fact that I often have sweet things to give away. The food mostly is well covered or wrapped. They must just like me.

If the place that you work in has fly repellants or those lights (whatever they are called) that kill flies I doubt that there will be any surrounding you even if you perspire. Bit confused GG.

I see them once in a while; usually the store puts up those sticky fly traps in the back rooms near the compactor and the back doors to help alleviate the problem. Doesn't always work (as you've discovered) and seeing one that needs to be taken down and covered in flies has got to be the most unappetizing sight
and I'd be really disgusted if I observed someone smashing one in a store-you're better off just swatting them away IMHO. I've seen birds that did imitations of old-fashioned dive bombs on customers in one supermarket-I was there working, but I wouldn't ever consider shopping there!
At a former job, we had squirrels that built a nest in the ceiling over my supervisor's head, chipmunks that used to run inside our warehouse and into our offices, and the worst-a giant cockroach nest was in the wall behind my computer! Yuck!
Guess it's good I was laid off years ago...

When I worked in receiving in Wal Mart years ago we would get a huge mouse problem in the "dog food trailer" where the dry stuff was kept. You know they got really fat on that Hi Protein dog chow.

I do demos in Dillons (Kroger) stores and they are all pretty clean and nice. They do hire companies in for resets regularly so I know the shelves get cleaned. Our WalMart here is pretty new and a lot of the same people have been here the longest. I think we are fortunate to have pretty clean stores, at least in my part of the state. It could be bad in other places, I am sure.

The Walmart where my boyfriend works is so filthy! I had a bread route and one night the salesman left a lot of extra bread in the backroom for me to pack out. I noticed that some was wet and when I mentioned it to Jim, he said, "Oh, that's because the roof leaks around there". I noticed that the shelves where they stock food are quite nasty-close to but not worst than some of the stores I worked at in Philadelphia.
I recall one in particular still had the older fiberboard shelves; when we were there, we had to clean the shelves thoroughly. They were so deep I had to almost climb in there and OMG! it smelled like someone had peed in there a long time ago!
Never so relieved to be away from that store!

I haven't seen many insects this year, perhaps because of the drought, but I wonder if you used a natural bug repellent, if that will keep them away from you? Because I can't stand flies and if I saw one walking on samples of food, you can be sure I will not try it..

They did not get on the food, as it was not out. I tend to keep my stuff covered in situations like that. Actually I was giving out Pop samples. The cups are stored upside down in a plastic sleeve and the bottles of pop were inside a cooler chest and I would just pour one and hand it out.

It would have to be something that did not smell strongly. We are cautioned not to use strong scented things. I did keep busy fanning myself with the newspaper I brought in.

I hate the pesky, nasty things. I would have swatted them.I don't think i have ever noticed one in a grocery but sure do hate to see them in a restaurant, yuck.I don't have many get in my house, thank heavens but it's a fight to the finish when they do.

The closest I came to being able to swat them, they were on the olive bar (like a salad bar, but antipasto stuff). I was afraid it would fall in. I have sanitizing wipes with me and if I could swat one on my table I would use those and change gloves after using sanitizer on my hands as well. I do not recall seeing any in a restaurant.

oh iam so sick of them also and yes they seem to go in to stores and every thing. its gross to swat them but id just do it and keep antibaterial wipes with me to wipe them up. because having a very fussy about food son, that everything has to stay covered just in case one gets in the kitchen, i know about that. he prefers swat and clean then to take a chance on one getting on the food. hes germaphobic

I do carry sanitizing wipes, and the stores also have those for the carts at the front of the store. I always put some extra in a bag in my kit to save me buying so many. If the flies would have stopped on my table, I would have probably gotten them with my newspaper, but they kept going to the olive bar and I was afraid I would kill one on top and it would fall in the food.

They have these zappers that look like a tennis racket that you can use to swat the offending little buggers. Puts them out of their misery fast. I notice flies in grocery stores too. The ones that make me think twice about purchasing something from is at the deli. When they are in the display case it gags me.

I have seen and read about them, I should add one to my kit, perhaps. Yeah, if they were inside the deli counter I would have a real hard time with it. You have made me think about the zappers, as I know they are pretty inexpensive.

I see some flies and other things do come in the grocery stores and bakeries. Here in our place there are machines that would attract files to them and would kill them. I think you must be doing hard time keeping the flies away. I think some times these kind of flies do bother us, but most times they would be around couple of minutes and would go away.

You are right, most of these stores have insect zappers in the front. However this set of flies may have come in the rear receiving doors. They bypasses the insect attractor and zapper.

Flies are small and fast. Some might even come in on people, the doors do close automatically but it is not fast enough, I guess.

I don't normally notice flies while I'm out and about.. it's probably the food you're sampling and not you.
My house is full of them though and it's sickening!! I mean, before we moved in the place was disgusting so naturally there were just a ton of flies. The walls were covered with fly droppings. But we've cleaned 90% of the house. I think the only room we really didn't clean is the laundry room.. cuz who cares.. and there's a couple areas we couldn't get to in other parts of the house.. but the majority of it is clean.
I know there's little things we do that help to attract them also. The trash is my son's chore and he's not perfect with it. Sweeping is also his chore which he doesn't do too well. Sometimes dishes pile up and dirty laundry sits on the bathroom floor. My house is not spotless by any means and most summers we do get a couple flies.. but nothing like this!
I've had to place fly strips in every room which I hate! They're so disgusting and embarassing. I've changed them a few times because they actually do get full, but we still have flies! Ugh!
My husband thinks maybe they just remember the house being nasty so they keep coming back.. or maybe they hibernated here at the house, like in the basement or something so that's why we have them again. I can't imagine that we're attracting new ones, but I suppose that it makes sense that some were just already here still and they've multiplied in our little messes.
I've been meaning to look up some remedies.. I think my mom said cloves work to repell them so I want to look into that and see.

I did see a lot of those ideas last night when I was searching for home remedies. My biggest problem area right now seems to be the bathroom. There's only a few in there but man are they annoying! I've got 3 fly strips in that room and loads of spiders, but still the flies exist.. ugh! Maybe it's time to grow some basil in the bathroom!

They just love you. Ha ha ha. I would swat him and kill him. Then I would take him by a wing and throw him in the trash. Then I would go wash my hands. Ugh! I never notice any flies in grocery stores. I do see them occasionally in out door fruit stands and I see some have fly strips up too.

If I could have hit one on my table, I would have. Then removed him with a paper napkin in my gloved hand. Then removed the gloves, cleaned my hands and the area with sanitizing wipes, then put on clean gloves. I just have to get faster. You know, it probably is not every time I do a demo, it is just that they are such nuisances I remember them well.

Generally, there are more flies than usual in dry weather, conversely more mosquitoes.I remember here people use a sort of paper spreaded with glue for gluing flies. It does it work.

Those glue traps do work, but I always manage to walk by them and catch my hair in them. I believe they are not allowed in food stores, but they were often the solution in barns and where animals are kept. Yes, wet conditions do attract and breed mosquitoes. I think maybe the flies want the moisture from my sweat, as I perspire a lot when I am working. It is very dry weather right now.

My current husband used to hang the glue covered fly strips. I do not know what kind you are familiar with, these unroll in a hanging spiral. My husband would hang one in our laundry area and I would forget it was there and my hair would stick in the glue. I like the kind that is a solid insecticide that sends chemicals into the air and makes the flies die.

Do not ever smash a fly when there are costumers in your store however you can smash them when you are all alone. When flies buzzes and fly around and sit on the stuffs it sometimes makes us annoyed and we start losing self control and this is bad for the business. You should try some infestations in outer part of your store to keep them away (not in inner part or the stuffs get poisoned). Alternatively you can try some products that helps to keep flies and insects away from your place (like electronic buzzer/ sounder). Or you can simply watch them flying and sitting here and there all the time but do not get annoyed or take frustration.

Some stores used to have these blue electric bars that flies and insects were attracted to, they would be drawn to the blue light and would be electrocuted, the bodies would collect at the bottom, so it was more hygienic. I know I shouldn't but when flies come into my room I spray them, trouble is I breathe in that horrid spray and it's not healthy! I've tried various bug repellants but none seem to work as well as the aerosol. Mosquitoes always seem to hunt me down, damn things, I've tried candles, everything, but they still find their way in! And that droning noise they make, goes right through me and I cannot rest until I've found it. Trouble is they hide when the light is on, as soon as the light goes out, out they come and feast.... on me :0(

Most of the stores do have those zappers, but they still get in and get away. I do not have trouble much with mosquitoes, they do not like the vitamins and garlic I consume. I have a couple of places in the house where I put a solid insect killer that hangs and it seems to take care of the flies indoors. Lemon oil is supposed to be as good a repellant as anything.

There is a wonderful little mom and pop fruit and veggie market near us that has a lot of people going in and out and it was very hot weather the other day when we went there and no breeze. Well, quite a few flies were buzzing around in there which was rather gross, but fortunately also unusual. I would rather you swat them if you could. It is grosser to have them walk on the food.

The part of the store where I was, the food was all covered except an olive bar that had things like olives and sundried tomatoes and artichokes and mushrooms. There was a strong vinegar and garlic smell and I noticed that the flies did not get down close to the items. I am just going to have to become a faster swatter. I guess it is lucky that it only two. Once hubby wanted me to eat ribs with him, in a hot summer at a place that only had outdoor dining. It was just too gross and hot and dirty for me, even if it was a friend who owned it.

Ewwww ewwww ewwww! In a grocery store? Omg I'd smash that thing as fast as I could! Especially if it's flying around me driving me nuts! Yes it's gross to do that in the store but it's much better than letting it fly around and land on what ever it does all the while spreading what ever it's carrying. YUCK!

Good to see you as well. The flies mostly wanted on me. They did not land on any food that I could see. Almost everything was covered except the olives and antipasto in the chilled bar, and they would not go any closer than the sneeze guard there. I think they smelled the vinegar and herbs. I did not portion out samples until I was ready to put them in people's hands as it was cold soda and I wanted it to stay cold. I was not fast enough to get the flies, I am thinking of getting an electronic fly swatter for my demo kit.

Management knows about them. Our stores do not have foods sitting out in the open, everything except fresh fruits and veggies is in covered containers. I only notice them when I am standing still. You cannot use too many poisons in a food store, unless you want to poison the shoppers as well.
