That's interesting actually. I live near the main road- not a very busy highway actually. But it gives me interest whenever I hear sirens from firetrucks and also make me alert what is happening around my area or nearby city.

I used to live right across the the street from the city's safety complex. Ambulances, fire trucks and police cruisers. At first I noticed them every time the sirens started. It was annoying. After a while, though, I realized I didn't notice them at all. If anyone had asked me if I heard sirens that day I really wouldn't have known. But whenever I was on the phone with my mother, if she heard the sirens, she would always say "Is there a fire?" or "Is that an ambulance? I hope no one is hurt." I'd usually tell her I don't know, Ma. It could be anything. But it was uneventful living across the street from them. And I think you get used to it. I did.

I'm not only near to a hospital, but a fire station, too. I hear sirens all the time. I guess I'm used to it. Only when they pass me on the street do I notice (having to cover my ears).

We have a fire station that relocated to a new facility about a half mile down the way. The used to be the opposite end of the highway about 2 miles away. We hear it's sirens a plenty since we are off of a main highway around here. It's now big deal it's just a normal sound around here.

Well, here in Delhi also, many people complained about the noise made by Intra-city Metro trains near their houses. This inspite of the fact that these trains do have some mecahnisms and cushions to cut-off a lot of noise. It is probably the alignment of the track that leads to such issues. Not so desirable, yet unabvoidable too.
