Are they effective? Is it really worth it to invest in laptop or netbook coolers? How can I prevent my laptop from heating up too much other than getting a cooler?

cdr king Cooling Pads - A laptop/notebook cooler, cooler pad or chill mat is an accessory for laptop computers that helps reduce their operating temperature. Normally used when the laptop is unable to sufficiently cool itself. Laptop coolers are intended to protect both the laptop from overheating and the user from suffering heat related discomfort.[1][2] A cooling pad may house active or passive cooling methods and rests beneath the laptop. Active coolers move air or liquid to direct heat away from the laptop quickly, while passive methods may rely on thermally conductive materials or increasing passive airflow.
Before, when we still didn't have any of those cooling pads for laptops or netbooks, I would use those caps that you can get from 1.5 plastic bottles of soft drinks just to give space underneath our laptop so that it can really exhaust the air well enough and lessen overheating when we get to use it too much. Then we eventually got to buy a cooling pad and those from cdr king was a good enough investment since the things that you can buy there would cost less than those branded ones you can buy at other stores and they would just do the same thing of cooling or exhausting the heat out of your laptop or netbook. Also, it seems that it would be better if the cooling pad's fans would assist on getting the heat out of your laptop/netbook than on trying to blow air into it. There were cooling pads before that had their fans spinning in a way that would blow the air into the laptop. I am not really knowledgeable about these things but if the air would be blown into the laptop vents, I thought that it would push dust into it eventually so I figured it would be best if the fans were helping to exhaust the hot air out. I just opened the cooling pad and had the fans flipped so that the fan would be spinning in the direction which would help to blow the air out. I remember aiming the exhaust vents of the laptop we had directly to one of the fans of the cooling pad as to directly exhaust heat from it. Some of the fans didn't really help in a way.

You are welcome! (^_^ ) It's not really that difficult to choose which cooling pad you would like to avail. If you would be going to the store with your laptop or netbook, you can easily try the cooling pads that they have and select which one really fits well as you can see if the fans are directly or close enough to the exhaust vents of your laptop or netbook. If you are not planning to bring your laptop or netbook, simplay know the measurements of the base of your laptop or netbook or, know the screen size so that the people in the store can easily offer something compatible. To distinguish the airflow, you can simply feel where the air is going when you turn on the cooling pad. Most cooling pads have hallow interiors so that it can easily disperse air or collect, whichever the air goes into or out of. I have also heard that glass surfaces is quite good for laptop when you use it for a long time, but I am not entirely sure about it.

Thanks for the informative response. That's just the thing, I'm not familiar with cooling pads that much, and I don't even know how to qualify one that will serve its purpose well. For all I know, I might be doing more harm than good on my laptop for using a cooling pad that is not doing its supposed job.

Durability of the laptop is lower than the desktop. At first, the laptop is meant to work for a while as long as you mobile. Air circulation in there at the bottom of the laptop. So, you must provide sufficient space at the bottom. The use of a laptop cooler, better facilitate air circulation. Use of laptop in an air conditioned very helpful.

I see, thanks for the pointers. Won't the cooler suck in more dust into the air vents or whatever it is you call them that I see on the sides of the laptop?

Yes, laptop cooler just facilitate air circulation. To clean the dust inside, you have to open its cover (if in doubt, bring to the workshop)

I need to buy a cooler for my Toshiba but I haven't gotten around to it. I really need one because it overheats and will randomly shut off.

Laptop coolers are suppose improve the air circulation at the bootom of the laptop. If you are using your laptop fulltime, always using it then you should invest in a cooler. WEll you can try shutting down unnecessary programs to decrease the load on your system, that should slow its heating. Using it in a cooler condition could be a plus point.

I have this same issue (burning my thighs due to an overheating laptop), so this response is helpful, Byamee. I think it is worth looking into finding a "cooler" function on my laptop if there is one, and perhaps investigate my task manager to figure out which programs are taking a lot of CPU and are thus overheating my computer. Thank you for the pointers.
