I guess Hatley's son has gotten her a phone for her room. She can even call long distance and she called me back just a little bit ago. Yes, it is her computer that is on the fritz as she would say. Her son is going to fix it before this weekend. She says she has been off line for about three weeks. I am glad her son takes good care of her, she is quite the treasure. My daughter informed me about a year ago that if we needed taken care of she would take care of my hubby and me. I hope everyone has someone who cares that way.

Well I am really glad that it is just her computer and that before the next weekend we will see her back on here. I hate her computer keeps messing up on her, maybe it's just time for a new one completely? Of course those aren't cheap.

The one she is on now is a new, reconditioned one. The other one melted from a short. I think this is a fairly small thing, but her son needs to fix it for her.

hi somecowgirl it was a video card thats transistors burst. seems according to my son a lot of transistors made in China in 2005 were poorly made of inferior quality and sold heap to us Americans who used them in their computers and had the transistors become corrupt. mine he found was made in 2005 and in China.

Oh okay I must've either forgotten missed the discussion or a discussion where she talked about a new computer... Well I know we're all waiting for her to get back on.

I like this purple swirly avatar. I fell asleep right after supper and slept 11 hours so I did very little myself. Good to see you back. I knew your son had said he would come, but sometimes things do not go as planned.

hi thoroughbob Yes I am fine and my son is always there for me. I feel sad you have no one to care for you and your hus band and disabled son should something happen to you two. but perhaps the nearest relative would chime in.Odd at times when you have a disabled child that some friends suddenly are nowhere to be found. sure goes to show whom are your real friends.

@Thoroughrob - Family or friends can hardly help. A good home for seniors is the answer. A senior needs much more than what friends and family can do as they too have restrictions.

Thank you so much for the update. I have been wondering where she'd disappeared to. When the most active person on a site like MyLot suddenly seems to disappear off of the face of the earth, her disappearance does not go unnoticed. Thnks again for letting us know where she went, and that she will be back. Good to know it's her computer, not her health.

hi Garden Gerty wow its so good to be back, and my son surprised me by coming last night Monday night. He put in the new video card and got me up and running here. I missed you all so much. yes about ten months ago I had a small cheap phone but I found out AT and T had a lifeline program for us seniors that only costs me about 7 dollars a month so I joined and my son bought me a really nice phone with all the frills. all moms who have sons like him should surely be grateful. I am glad that if it ever became necessary your daughter would care for you too.

Glad all is well. With having 5 kids I think it's safe to say that when our time comes that my husband and I cannot take care of ourselves anymore, at least some of our children should be willing to help us out and take care of us (I hope). I know they did see how well my husband took care of his father during his final year.. and hopefully they remember that when it's their turn. Hopefully hubby and I also remember how difficult it was that the burden was fully on his shoulders when caring for his father. It was rough at times, and stressful, and I really wished he didn't have to do it, but if he didn't no one else would, so he did. I don't want to be a burden on any of my children. I don't want their spouse's and children to suffer for my sake. I'm hoping the 5 of them will share the burden so none of them feel too much pressure.. and I'm hoping I have enough sense to know when I have become too much for them and seek professional help.

It is good to plan ahead when you can. My daughter has seen me take care of her dad, then my sister and sometimes assorted friends and acquaintances to one degree or another. I believe that is what is on her mind when she says they will take care of us. Your family will probably do the things that they have seen you do.

I have been off of here for several days and so I wasn't aware our friend was missing. Glad she is okay. She certainly is lucky to have that son of hers. And a plus that he knows about computer. I think we are growing one of those here. Heehee. Good to hear your daughter plans to take care of you and your husband when the time comes. I live here with daughter and she already does alot for me.

I am glad to hear that Hatley is doing fine and just having computer problems, although I am sure that I have seen her around here lately ... she probably has had those problems taken care of since this discussion was started. I do have someone that will take care of me - my oldest daughter. In fact, she is so thorough that she is already looking into "old age homes" for me, even though I am absolutely nowhere near being old enough to have to go into one. She says that she is just trying to secure a good spot in an excellent facility, but I suspect that she is just trying to get rid of me without drawing too much attention to what she is doing.

You commented yesterday in the same box than Ms Hatley -- http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2690886.aspx#10 -- : with your memory issues, it is perhaps wise to seek now for an "old age home".

The new trend and that is to leave one's shores seeking greener pastures can sometimes pose problems for the younger generation to be with their elders much as they would have liked to. In such situations it would be best for elders not to disturb their children. Invariably many a time it is the parents that want their children to better their prospects which prompts them to leave their shores.

I know that trend has hit many countries. Even when family lives close at hand so often they work long hours and cannot do as much as they would like to for family.

I have done a lot of research about caring for seniors. There is not much friends or family can do. A well run home for seniors is the answer.

If parents plan their future and have enough savings they do not have to depend on their children as some seniors do.

hi svjg yes I had an Indian Couple who were friends and we met on Wednesdays for supper together. and they were downright shocked that so many of u s Americans do not take our elderly into their homes. I loved it that they were caring for her parents in their home along with their adult son and daughter.Shiv told me that its the custom and the culture to be responsible for one's elderly parents.

Oh good, I can't wait to see her here again. she does have a wonderful son and I wonder which of my children would take the time and energy to care for me in my old age??? I really don't know. My one daughter is caring, but our personalities are so clashing sometimes. My youngest son might be a good candidate, but I better not need him for a while, he is only 10...lol

Hi Hatley, I miss you!!!!!! That's a sweet story, he was caring for you even back then..Now I am worried; I can't see my son doing that now, if anything he'd be the one disturbing me, but not my daughter...So maybe it will be her or I could be surprised and it would be one of my other two children...

hi carm I am back like Arnold Swarztenheimer. you know when y ou spoke of your ten year old son that brought a memory. I had just retuirned from the hospital having had my hemorrhoids remvoed. my son was then ten. He was sweeping the kitchen when I heard him tell my mom" no grandma , mom is sleeping don ''t disturb her." I was surprised, a little schocked and my mom grum, ble "well I never . we just want to see here. and my son stood there broom in hand and again told her and my sister to come b ack later. I did not know whether to laugh or cry o what. My little son was sticking up for me.

Thank you for letting us know what has happened to Hatley. Her news is music to my ears. Hatley is fortunate enough to have a dutiful son and So are you.Over here the elderly population aged 60 and older has exceeded 100 million, fortunately the government is making inroads into the problem of providing for the aged.
