weave it looms

I inherited a Weave it loom from my husbands aunt when she passed. I love using it to weave but would love a larger version to make place mats with. I did find a few patterns to make some online but there are two distinct versions and I was hoping someone could give me some insight. One version has thicker wooded pegs while the other has thinner "nail" type pegs. I am wondering which is a better choice or if it matters at all?
I added a picture I found of one that is similar to what I have.

The one I had as a kid was plastic with plastic pegs, so, not so many to make loops, but it also used craft loops.
I think if you were to get basically a frame a little larger than the size you want your placemats, you could probably use it like a loom, stringing the long way and weaving in the short way.
In that case you would only put nails at the long ends and then use whatever (ribbon/yarn) to weave. Just a suggestion, kind of like a wider, but only so long inkel loom http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inkle_weaving (my loom is way less complex and makes way shorter straps)

I tried a frame on one inch wood but the nails split it. I need a harder wood maybe...

If you go to a craft store they have these wood frame thingies (I used them back when I made punch rugs in high school) and you can get various sizes from like 6 to 8 inches to several feet. They interlock at the corners, but I can't find a web link because I can't think of what they are called...

I was lucky to have my husbands grandmother to show me how to use it as before being in their family I had never seen one before.
