How can you tell something is real silver?

I know there is a magnet test and a water displacement test. I can do the magnet test but not the water test. What other tests are there. I don't want to go to a jewelry store.

You can soak the silver in a lemon solution, it is fake if it turns rusty. There are no real silver, silver is mixed with copper to be hard.

Hello tangleddreams, If it is sterling silver and it is real it should be marked by the number 925. I believe thats the number that silver should have. Good luck, hope this helps. By the way it may be small and hard to see the numbers but all silver should be marked.
