Stocking up?

I've been reading about possible food shortages and probable high food prices in the near future so I'm stocking up a little more than I usually do, depending on what I can afford. Do you stock up on food and other items when you find a sale?

Getting things like school supplies a little at a time sure can help! Every little bit helps.

I am going to start because I have heard the same thing for a while now. The first time I heard it was from Glen Beck. I need to start doing that if we have a little extra money to do it with now and then...

I think it's a good idea. It doesn't take much extra to get started - just a couple of dollars here and maybe five there.

Hello peavey, Well I don't know how things work in other places (though I suppose roughly the same), but here prices keep on rising while salaries stay the same. Bucharest now has some of the highest prices in the European Unions but if you consider our minimum wage of under 200 us dollars you will rather live in the jungle. In my wife's grandmother's apartment block there are families that have 4 people and 3 room apartment and have to pay about 250 or more dollars per month- if those 4 people are 2 adults and 2 children and the adults have minimum wage how are they supposed to survive ? I should mention that utility bills are not all inclusive, not to mention that rent would be a separate problem, and food would cost at least as much. But I am deviating from the subject - most of the time it is good to save money by buying more at once, especially if it is on offer and it is not perishable food.

elitess, it sounds like we're all heading the same direction. Costs are going up and up and wages are not. It may not be as bad here as it is there, at least for most people, but it's continually getting worse. I think that gives us even more reason to stock up when we can. It certainly helps save money.

I also save money on coupon sites (you should have groupon where you live, check it out if you don't know what it is about), where you get discounts on various products and services. I got movie tickets and ice skating entrance with 30 cents instead of 3 dollars.

ive been trying to keep that in mind but in this house its a bit hard to stock up. we have so many adults here eating and 3 of them work and dont like to cook and the other one dont like to do anything but lay around which leaves me doing what little cooking is done. i dont often feel that great and dont cook enough every day. so can food and such get eaten way to quickly. iam slowly getting some stocked up but its hard to do in this house.

Sounds like you need to hide some things! Good luck.

Reading your message made me think of: I must be wise enough in doing this tactic... :) I mean if you stocks a lot of food bunnybon and they will know that you're stocking something then for sure that they will not discipline themselves of consuming it prior to the time it must be consumed. Well, hiding sounds better choice but I guess there would be a best choice, tell them that they should not consume those foods quickly for it's been purchase for a purchase... ;)

I don't normally stock up too much even when there is inventory, I do like to get stuff that is on sale though. I only buy few more of on sale stuff when I use them up very often.

Even a few more things bought on sale can help.

I'm considering it right now. Sometimes we do stock certain items. It's hard on our limited budget. On the other if we don't stock our limited budget might have more trouble in the future.

I think you have it right. It may be hard now but it might be a lot harder in the future.

There are times when we find a good deal on something we will try and stock up more on that item. When you find a good sale, it is worth it to take full advantage and stocking up on cert items never hurt for sure. Because in reality you never know what may come your way tomorrow so planning ahead can save you time and money in your future as well.

Absolutely agreed. What comes tomorrow is never certain for anyone.

I do. Every week I will buy just a few things.. maybe what is on sale and buy 3-4 of them more than what I need. I know we will eat it eventually. I watch expiration dates, and have noticed that sometimes...the date is not that far off so hard to stock up in that case. But what you have to watch to is to rotate your stock..that is what I do about once a month...and then take the near expire stuff and use it and buy new stuff to "stock".

I agree. Rotating what we have is definitely something to keep in mind. There was a time when I didn't pay much attention to it, but after having to throw out food that cost me good money, I've learned to use the oldest first.

I only stock up when I find a sale and I have the money. Things haven't gone up too much since you've posted this discussion. Though I"m happy to say I now have a small deep freezer so that's handy and helps us out more to keep food in the house when times are lean.

A freezer can really make a difference. I stock up when things are in season and that helps, too.

I hate shopping with a passion and have to drive some distance to get to a large supermarket where I can stock up on those things we don't produce ourselves (rice, pasta etc). I also cook for large numbers a lot of the time and have a large vehicle. The result is that I go shopping once in a blue moon, but buy half the shop each time! I have a floor of my house which is half built and it's currently given over to groceries! But you asked about stocking up when things are on offer. Yes, of course. We have a local supermarket which hands out loyalty vouchers each month. Sometimes they're useless, for things I would not normally buy. But occasionally they're for something I'll use loads of anyway so I simply buy all the stock they have, knowing that I can transport and store it, and that we'll use it. As far as I'm concerned, that's what my credit card is for (providing I pay it off of course!).

That's the way to do it. I don't usually use a credit card, but I do "rob Peter to pay Paul" sometimes when there's a good sale on. Why pay full price for the same thing a month later?

Yes, I do! I'm on a limited budget and really don't want to work more than I have to. I prefer to do volunteer work, as it brings me much more happiness and satisfaction than money does.

Makes sense to me! Stocking up when things are on sale can really stretch a limited budget so you can keep your mind on more important things.

I haven't really before but I have considered getting a little more to put back over the last year. I think it is a great idea for many reasons. There is, if course, the high food prices we will be facing but I have also considered it because of the weather here that is becoming increasingly turbulent. I think that I will start putting back a little extra. We are really going to see it by next year I think.

Good point. We can't always tell what the weather will bring. There are always other disasters, too, that could interrupt the food supply, like union strikes or even earthquakes and the like. I really think we're going to start seeing it soon, too. Crop yields are way below average due to the weather.

I use to buy when food is on sale, but never so much as to say that I stock up on an item. I might buy a couple of kilos of rice or 2 liters of oil instead of one. As for other items, I cannot imagine what would I possiby need to stock up. I guess I have all I need.

If you have all you need, you're in good shape. The reason I stock up when things are on sale is to keep from having to pay full price for things when I need them. Especially now with prices rising, it saves me money.

I used to buy foods and other stuff if it's on sale. But stocking food for more a couple of months is not my habit. I usually buy groceries every 18 day of the month (every two weeks). For I already budgeted my money before receiving a salary. Well, perhaps if given a chance to stock a food I would prefer to stock can goods for it's expiration is longer compared to other goods. I usually buy stuff on the sale but if I don't have a chance to buy it, sometimes I just waited for another sale. I remember before I hastily but the "kitchen stuff" because it's on sale. Then couple of months after that sale there's another sale and it's cheaper than the first sale :(

Yeah, you have to really pay attention to the prices. Some people keep a price book with the prices of things they usually buy. After keeping track of the prices after awhile you can tell when it's a good sale and when it isn't. Well, at least you used to, before prices started changing so fast.

We live in a small space, so we don't really have room to stock up. We did pick a lot of blackberries and froze them, but that's more because we do that every year (we like smoothies!). I'd stock up a bit if I could, but not a lot because I'd be worried about shelf life.

Things like canned meats and dry goods have long a long shelf life, so I stock up on those whenever I can. I know people who have boxes of canned goods under their couches and one keeps a stash of rice and oats under her bed!

Oh I wish we had the money to. I remember back in 1998-1999 my husband would stock up on this food from aldi's, getting cases of canned vegetables among other stuff for the upcoming "disaster" that was suppose to hit in the year 2000... Of course nothing happened, but this time around, I know the prices are going to soar and the stores are not going to be able to stock up as much. I have a friend who has a dehydrator and she is drying a lot of food. That is what I would like to do, but I don't have a machine. . . yet...I am looking forward to getting one soon and hopefully before it gets too crazy..

carmelanirel, if you can use $5 every time you shop for groceries to buy extra of something on sale, that's all it takes. I hope you can get a dehydrator, too, but you better hurry if you want one before it gets crazy! You don't have to have a dehydrator to dry some foods if you have a warm, airy place to put them. I dry celery and onions on a plate on top of the refrigerator.

I have always stocked up when something I use all the time that has a long shelf life is on sale. I'm learning, though, that it can backfire. Example, since we changed our diets, we aren't supposed to eat some of those staples, like kidney beans, anymore. Fortunately, he can eat some things, such as garbanzo beans and tomatoes, that I'm not supposed to eat, so it's not a total loss. Also, if times got bad we would not be poisoned or anything if we ate foods on our avoid list. It would, of course, beat starving. But after stocking up on our favorite whole grain bread from Costco, we now find we aren't supposed to eat it because both of us should avoid wheat. Of course, if something isn't edible, such as toilet paper, stock up.

That's happened to me a couple of times. Not because I couldn't eat the food at all, but because I changed my diet to eat healthier. I gave away what I didn't want to eat any more, so it wasn't wasted.
