A real hero indeed, both on screen and off screen.

Dara Singh is no more within us. A golden era in Indian cinema has come to an end with the passing away of this iconic wrestler and Bollywood actor. Dara Singh was a multi-faceted personality; he was an acclaimed wrestler; a powerful actor, a producer and a politician. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2003. Dara Singh was also conferred with such titles as Rustam-e-Punjab and Rustam-e-Hind. He had won numerous championships in his career as a wrestler. He remained undefeated in 500 fights. He will always be remembered for playing the larger-than-life role of Hanuman in Ramanand Sagar’s epic television series, ‘Ramayan’. He had entertained his audience in over 100 films, including movies like ‘Kink kong’, ‘Faulad’ and so on. As a wrestler, he made the sports fraternity proud by winning the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship in 1959 and the World Wrestling Championship in 1968. Thus I am not sure how I should describe him, as a successful star of Bollywood or as a champion wrestler or as both. But to me, he was a real hero, both on screen and off screen.

Hello, it is surprising for me that you are from Bengal but you are known to much about this great actor and wrestler. Dara Singh was from a small village Dharmu Chak near Amrtisar. He was achieved all these though he was illlitreat. Dara singh also direct some films of Punjabi.

I did not know his birth place. So thanks to you for this important news. Dara Singh might have directed some films in Punjabi, which I am not aware of. But as far as I remember, he produced a film on the freedom movement(Mukti Juddha) of Bangladesh in 1971, named 'Mera Desh Mera Dharm'. I saw the film.

As far as I can recollect at present is that his son, probably Bindu by name(nick name) was married to Farha, an ex-heroine of Bollywood and elder sister of Taboo but probably they are now divorced.

Hi Doctor :)
ya its true that dara singh was a real hero, both on screen and off screen but its also true that he is still hero in our hearts :) , i am 23 years old so my childhood spent with his movies and one of the great TV programs Ramayan. His role was in Ramyan just incredible , no one can replace him for hanuman role. He was a ideal of all children. When we saw his program then we also start say "Jai shree Ram" in school, we always copy him and other side in movies his role always a simple man who live very simply and do help others.
I think he was God of wrestling like Sachin Tendulkar is God of Cricket. I am big fan of Sachin so give his example ... :)

this sounds like a very accomplished person, I wish I had known them before. You've made me want to read more on the subject and see a few of those films. This person sounds exceptional, there are very few celebrities like that nowadays, that are just as much of hero in real life as on the screen.
