Finally Manmohan Singh hasn’t given in to Mamata Banerjee.

The Communist Party of India(CPM) called for a general strike in West Bengal for 10 hours from 6 AM to 4 PM on Thursday, the 20 th September, 2012 on the hot issue of reforms going to be taken by the central government of India while Trinamul Congress (TMC) under the leadership of Miss Mamata Banerjee, the present Chief Minister of West Bengal opposed the strike call by CPM and withdrew support from the UPA ministry in protest against the said issue. In your opinion, which one of the two constantly fighting political forces in West Bengal has gained more political advantage over the issue, CPM or TMC or both or none? Please try to support your claim by reasons? Do you think it as a got-up game between the Congress and the TMC? Mamata has to raise voice against it to maintain her pro-people image whereas the Congress has to consider the growing financial deficit the country is facing for a long time and also to divert the attention of people from different scams the present ministry is accused of. This move by TMC will keep the pro-people image of Mamata on one hand and on the other hand will enable the Congress to proceed with the mission of necessary reforms. Thus purpose for both the parties will be served by this move by Mamata. If successful, it may help the Congress to recover the lost vote bank to some extent and thus may help to attain the magic figure in the next election to form the government or at least may help it to approach near about the magic figure. And in that condition, Mamata may come forward to extend support to form the government in a bigger interest to resist the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) from forming the government. Under such circumstances, CPM would not get any chance to point fingers to Mamata as it itself had done the same thing by extending support to the Congress to form the government, thus resisting the BJP from forming the government. Anything can happen in politics; so none of us can claim to be sure what is happening behind the curtain, everything is an assumption which may or may not be true. But as a citizen of the country, we must try to realize what is happening all around and must keep a constant vigil over the political developments. Manmohan Singh has now the liberty to carry on the desired reforms in full swing and latest information is that the Central government has already issued notifications about FDI. Now it is to see who is right in the issue, Manmohan Singh or Mamata Banerjee? Isn’t it?

Once former president Dr. Kalam said that do the polotics for the development not for polotics. At present all parties are doing the same. They have not any interest in development of country. Mamata's attitude is not fair. Bangli are most intelligent community. They understand need of time. So I think with the calles no one gain. Both Mamta and CPM loss.

I would rather say that ultimately the country is the loser due to all these dirty politics played by our so called leaders.

I am not privy to inner party dynamics of Congress and TMC. But I have my reservations about any grand understanding between both parties. Mamata has never missed an opportunity to embarrass UPA govt. be it stalling reforms, refusing to go to Dhaka with PM or drama over resignation of her own railway minister & also public spat over Presidential elections. It seems both parties bargained hard with each other with little success. TMC could have easily left government but could have continued supporting from outside. TMC seems unhappy with not getting relief for the state from financial mess. While Prime Minister is unhappy with functioning of railway ministry. Both parties are indulging in politics of appeasement and brinksmanship. Also, I am not so sure of any great reforms happening in a hurry. The UPA government for all its posturing is fighting for survival with opposition baying for its blood. Till all parties have some understanding and climate is created for reforms, the credibility of current govt is so low, it is going to be real tough considering economic mess the country is already in.

Any coalition government is viable so long the political bargain is met up. It is the politics of pressure and counter-pressure. Manmohan Singh tried to adjust with Mamata but ultimately he had no other way but to resist it and firmly stick to his decision. It is a wise decision on his part and would definitely be beneficial to the development of the country.

I'm lost at the government systems of India. So we have a Chief minister for every province or State are they called? I would love a link with such details please!
