the electiricity went off in my building

Each day I am finding out something new about the seniors apartment building that I just moved into. The electricity went off for about 10 minutes so I went to ask the neighbours about it. Well it appears that the elevators still work and their is partial lightening in the building when the electricity goes out because there is a generator. I think that is wonderful. All apartment buildings she have a generator as far as I am concerned. Any thoughts?

Oh, well that's good! I don't even know if our last apartment complex had a generator - geez, I never thought about it. We didn't have an elevator but there was lighting all over. Once there was an entire blackout of the entire street - and it was pitch black. It was like that for hours into the night - and it was a hot night - so we went walking for dinner and just to be out of the complex (no lights, no AC, no nothing - stairs galore so it would potentially be dangerous). So maybe we didn't have one?!

It is a serious situation when the whole city goes into a black out. all essential services wold be seriously affected. people really would have no idea what is going on. Even it can lead to undesirable panics. In the case of hospitals, they always do have serious power backups.

yes blackouts are terrible, you also get people who will take advantage of it and start breaking windows and stealing from stores and so on.

It's interesting you say "hospital" because now we live in a house - and the local hospital is just down the street from us. I suppose if there was a serious black out, we can always run to the hospital - hee hee.

yes we lost a lot of computer and electronic stuff in the old house we moved because the landlord wouldn't fix the electricity. However, here when it goes out there is nothing much that can be done, because it is the city power lines.

When the electricity goes off, it can damage the computer in a way that it won't be able to work again. It can burn a fuze inside, disabling it from working. It can also destroy the T.V and you will need to pay money to fix the T.V and the computer. Even the generator can't prevent it. The damage is done before the generator starts working.

i would find that pretty scary. you almost feel like a prisoner in your own house because, unless you can do the stairs, you can't get out. i think you are right about the generator. what if it was the middle of January? the heat would go out as well! that could be horrible for some. also, what about people that have breathing machines? what would they do?

no the elevators worked we have a generator. Also if the power goes out in January it doesn't matter because we are not heated by electricity we are heated by gas.

When I saw your title, I thought, "Oh, no, shades of the last place." But I see that everything's ok. Nice that they have that generator. We didn't have a generator in my small condo building (5 units) in Vancouver, but there was some sort of provision for the emergency exit lights to still be on if the power went out, batteries maybe?

I would say whatever it is, they atleast have an exit plan in case of emergencies. In our places, its all up to god to save the souls. When the power goes off, all are left in dark. I guess most buildings have elevators, but thats only my guess. Not quite sure if it has been fully implemented.

hi tina oh my ha ha we have a generator here too but the last itme the power went off the repair guy tried to get it to bring on at least power for the elevators and it went "chug gasp chug ghug gasp chug gasp chu,,,gas,, and quit,I was glad that the power went off after we got back from dinner as otherwise I would have had to climb down two flights of stairs with my walker lol hope you have a nwer generator. ours should be replaced but the three owners are really penny pinching on the wrong things here generator and the food they serve us..I just know all apartments and retired peoples centers should have working generators in them

I think these are the places where generators are must. The old people do have emergency situation and it would be good if they uninterrupted power. Youngsters can afford to stay in a dark for some time. But our world always favours who requires less and the needy always suffers.

Amen to that, all buildings with a large number of people should have generators. I am like this senior residence has one. It is no fun climbing stairs if you live on the 10th floor or whatever.

Well i completely agree to your point. A generator is a must for all the apartments. U never know when emergency situations might strike. It is our responsibility to be equipped before hand so that at the crunch time, we do not feel helpless. Good to know that there was partial electricity in your new building otherwise the elevators would not have worked properly. What say?

You are right at the point about this issue. In our locality too, power cuts are a quite normal thing. But most of us doesnt have generators. Since we dont have many high rise building in the locality. There is no much issue with the elevator and all since we use stairs mostly.

It is good they have a generator. It is very inconvenient when the electric goes out. I do think that most should have generators that kick in.

I thought that most commercially owned buildings, including multi unit apartments, HAD generators. Currently, our landlord is so cheap that there aren't even porch lights out front!

maybe it depends where you live. Here it is not mandatory for an apartment building to have a generator.

That could be true. We live in a former pair of twin homes, converted into five separate living units. I guess he figures the street light on the opposite corner provides enough light to see who is at our door. So in our case, a generator would not be necessary. I'm in Pennsylvania-where are you?

Even our church building has a back-up generator, and our power rarely goes off. Recently, I was shopping at our local Walmart and heard an announcement that there would shortly be an interruption in the electric power. I was the last person in line to get checked out before the power went off. The lights came back on shortly, but the cash registers would not work. It seems that their emergency generator was not strong enough for that. Our house and the church building are powered by GVEC, but WalMart gets their electricity from CPS. Yes, I agree that any apartment building that houses the elderly or disabled should have to have a back-up generator strong enough to work the elevators.

maybe the cash registers are not supposed to work, in case of people looting and stealing stuff in a black out.

Ma¥be that had something to do with it. However, it wasn't a blackout. The emergency generators had brought the lights back on.

In today's time, it is advisable for any commercial buildings to have their own power generator. I think this is a must..especially if you are on a business..I am glad your building have this one.

I think most of the commercial buildings do have power back up. Especially in the field of information technology, power backup is a must. you might be working on virtual clients and server data, when the power is cut off, the whole goes into jeopardy. may be the server might get corrupt or your data might be lost. recovering a lost data would be quite near to impossible. So its always advisable not to take such risks.

You're absolutely correct, all information today are saved in servers..so power failure must always be prevented..

That should be the case in a building. Generator is a must, so that those trapped in the elevator because electricity suddenly went off, can go out of it in a matter of minutes.

I would suggest even if backup is not there for the entire building one can do away with it. but elevators must need power backup. Getting trapped up in an elevator is not a good idea. I had been trapped up in my office elevator once. I didnt shout , but I can say its a weird feeling.

That's good that they have their own generator. I've been considering moving to senior housing and not all of them have that. My town has it's own electric company, so it's pretty reliable, but it still goes out at times. Some of the senior apartments are 5 & 6 floors up. To be without power would be awful. Many people wouldn't be able to use the stairs if they had to get out. That sounds like a pretty nice place, winterose, except for the squealers!

Hi friend, sad to hear about the Electric problems, here also we have power problems and most of the time we don't have power and suffering a lot with it, due to the frequent power problems lot of persons bought their own generator to avoid the electric issues. Good to know your neighbors having generator, it is the best way to avoid power issues

Hello winterorse, when you tell me about power cuts for ten minutes it doesnt shock me much since we have much more frequent power cuts here. Infact the length of it keeps on increasing because of the new rises and building that are coming up. Even though the demand for power has increased, supply has been the same and even the authorities find it difficult to properly distribute it.

Your very lucky that your apartment building has a back up generator. I have never gone without power for more thena day but gaving a generator would be great for those times the power goes out and I need a shower etc. My father in law has one and so does my mans parents whom he lives with. Out in the country they lose their power often and sometimes for days on end so its necessary to own one out there. In town here they restore power quickly fortunately.

I think that any building with an elevator, but especially a residential building, really should have a back-up power source to run the elevator during a power outage. Otherwise, you run the risk of people ending up trapped in an elevator for who knows how long until the power is restored.

As i know, the elevator is not safe when there is no electricity. Even though, there have a generator to power on elevator, but we don't know what will happen without electricity. Without electricity is very hard to life and work, but i think the best way is just staying at home when the electricity go off.

the elevators work with generators, generators are the run by batteries, but no one knows when the power is going to go out, in a big apartment building you may already be out coming home from work or whatever and if the elevator does not work then you have to climb many flights of stairs. Thankfully, we don't have to here.

I agree, but it really comes out the owners pocket. Many dont want too spend that kind of money. But then being a seniors building could save a lot of liability being as its seniors. In an emergency it would be easier, I remember working in a senior complex and whent he fire alarm went off we had to literally caary people down the stairs.
