What is moss for?

I know it grows on trees and rocks in nature. I heard it was called God's carpet. What is it for exactly? Is it food for something? It has something to do with moisture and the sun. I once saw moss growing in a toilet that hadn't been used in a long time and was directly under a sunlight window. A child asks this question and I don't know the answer?

I noticed moss grow in mainly moist, deeply shaded areas. Moss will grow where almost nothing else can. It can be used for home/garden decor. You can put it on the pot of your "bonsai" plant to make more attractive and fancy.

Yes. Have seen that. I have seen flowers with that in gardens. I remember using miss once back when I had frogs to hold water for the moisture they needed but not too much water so they would drown I guess. It helped with drainage too for the plants growing. I put it under the plant so the dirt wouldn't run into the water and the filter system I had for them. I have used it for that. I was wOndering whatnot grew in nature at all.

Maybe moss were just designed to grow on such locations to create it's own identity. Because whenever we see moss what's on our mind this must me a mainly moist and shaded location. I'm sorry that's the only idea that popped up in my mind LOL...

Birds and fish thrive on moss. It could be dried and used to cover props for plant climbers such as what are called money plants. For more on moss sticks you can visit: http://gardening-simplified.blogspot.in/2011/06/money-plant-and-making-moss-stick-at.html

Using moss in your garden will retain moisture that is vital to your plants growth. I use moss in my house plants and do not have to water them as often. I also have used moss to make the ground softer when we were camping out. There are many uses for moss. Dried moss makes great tender for starting a fire. Moss can also be used as a bandage for wounds. Some moss has things that will stop you from bleeding if you are hurt and have nothing else on hand. It will also work in baby diapers as a way to keep there bottoms dry. Not that many people use moss in their baby diapers any more but it was a common use back in the day. Some animal live on different types of moss I am not sure if humans can eat it but I am sure that you can as I vaugely remember reading that it would thicken soups and stews as well.
