Electricity supply or Power supply in India is getting worst day by day.Almost every city is subjected to mandatory power cuts on daily basis. Some times these power cuts are under taken without any notice declared in Newspapers. In fact for last few years because of sudden demand in electric power this scarcity has arisen, Almost every big city got expanded from all the four sides physically putting more pressure on power plants to produce more of energy. Though we have several grids in our country who are getting power supply from various power plants and depending upon the demand they help each other, in the recent past there was a break down of three power grids because of over supply. This crisis can be met only if some more private power generating units will come into action. The existing private power plants are unable to meet the demand. In big cities the Malls and other commercial buildings have been asked by the government to produce power by diesel generators for their need. Thus the Malls in and around NCR are self generating the power. Inspite of this, every now and then we see power cuts and the inverters used at the domestic levels are getting failed as they are not getting enough of power supply to get charged the batteries of the unit. I am based at a rural area on a Farm, we hardly get power supply for 12 hours a day. We are depending on Diesel power generators and inverters as our source of electricity. Things are very bad. How about you? Do you have power failures at your area? How are getting coped up with the crisis? Please respond thanks!

It never fails to amaze me what developing nations have to put up with. Puts us to shame here in the UK. We very rarely have power cuts (this may be due to the fact we're not the biggest nation in the world) but I tell you now, if we did, there would be a LOT of moaning about it. We certainly wouldn't be as philosophical as your wonderful nation, that's for sure. I hope it all gets sorted out very soon.

Dear Janey, it is basically the fast expansion and progress made by the country which is having a vast area. Here we have a tremendous growth of urban area. If you see for last 5 years almost every city of the country has got expanded from every side thus increasing the area which requires more power supply. Thus there is a disparity between the power supply and the demand by the consumer. Though the Government is asking these new ventures taken by commercial parties to have their own power back up things are not working as they should have been. The projects requiring constant power supply have been added as a part and parcel of National development, which include metro railways in many big cities. There has been a drastic improvement in the number of electrical trains all over the country. Similarly many factories and industries have been set up in the country. Thus all these developments demand more power supply and there are no new power plants created to generate the additional energy needed. So we are i need of setting up some more new power plants, which will be set soon by the Government to cope up with this problem. Regarding your last point, it is not because of the desperate feeling people have become philosophical but for the obvious reasons known to them for the shortage of the power most of them facing the situation quietly. Nothing can be done by the Government with a magic wand! Things will take its own time and we all know that Government is trying to curb the crisis and we will have our golden days back soon! Thanks a lot for responding dear Janey!

Yes, dear Janey, it is the pace of the change and I think this problem is existing every where! In India also we are having some nuclear power plant projects on the papers which will take some time to get implemented, Since India is a big country and is having different terrains we have advantage of generating power from alternative sources! We have good number of mountain ranges and sea beaches which can be used to create power from wind mills. Similarly we have many plain terrains which can be easily used for generating solar powers without creating any pollution to environment! Thanks!

Yes, it's the pace of change that's the problem isn't it? Of course, we have the National Grid but even that is struggling to cope with demand due to our excessive usage of electricity, something we rely on far more than we used to. Whether we get more power plants (including nuclear) is currently under debate but they take such a long time to build that renewable energy may be the only answer - and the problem with THAT is we get the NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) brigade objecting to those lovely wind turbines as they obscure their views..views that certainly do NOT belong to them. I'm hoping the wind turbines get much, much smaller as I'd LOVE one on my roof, just to wind everyone up lol.

now its the new fashion statement and i find it quite funny, all these days most people are using only inverter supply and they tend to stick with it for sure.its quite irritating

Dear Natliegleb! Using inverter is not a fashion statement! This is the need of the hour! Inverter also requires some electricity to keep the batteries charged! Thus it is nothing but storing the electric power when it is available which can be used when it is required in absence of power supply by the Government! This source is easily available commercially in the market and that is why people are going it. If solar panels and Wind mills are to be used then we won't get them readily in market to procure! Under such circumstances there is no other alternative left for middle class man other than using the inverters as diesel generators are very expensive and they require permission from Government authorities to use them and they cause environmental pollution too! Thanks ! I agree with thewonderboy that many families in India are depending on the government power supply only and their economy doesn't permit them to afford inverter! These people are simply suffering the power cuts having left without any alternative source! Thanks !

Here in Kerala most of the families most f the family goes under an average income, which means that most of them are dependent upon the power supply. If the power supply is off they can't do the works or their duties as they wish. It is we coomon people who suffers from the power cuts

Power cut off usually happens here in our country during summer season. The electric company will give warnings to affected area two days before the scheduled cut off. It takes 4-6 hours power cut once a week, or every two weeks per-area. During rainy season, we don't have much trouble with power cut- off.

That is what we too used to have in our country dear Jaiho! We used to get notification in news papers about the proposed load shedding in advance so that people can be ready to cope up with the situation. But nowadays there is nothing like that the power supply is interrupted without any notice putting the people into trouble. In summers because of increased demand of supply the power cuts are inevitable; in rainy season because of faulty lines we have power cuts. In winter we have power cuts without any reason. We never have received 24 hours power supply now more than 8 to 10 years in our area and we are having quota of 8 to 12 hours power supply per day. We people are depending on diesel generator and inverters. Now with the cost of the diesel touching the sky the things are becoming much tougher to cope up. Similarly the cost of the inverter batteries has gone up drastically in last few years. Thus we have to pay though our noses to have electric power at our place! Thanks dear Jaiho for responding!

Here in Kerala we people have power cuts on each day night time for half and hour. Along with it we have a long power cut at day time due to other simple reasons. I think it can be called as power cuts becuase it is happening on most of the days. The power is switched off by the electricity office to carry out their maintenance work. I and my family gets really in trouble during those time without electricity. Even though the price of the electricity per unit has increased yet we people n Kerala face the same.

I can understand your problems dear thewonderboy! We often have power cuts under different pretexts! But the main problem is non availability of the power to the government t supply the am to general public! Though the local electric power houses are ready to dispatch the power hey are not getting the required amount of the power from the respective grids! That is why we have the problem. Alternative power generation is only the alternative way to cope up with this problem till the time we don't have some more power plants coming into action! The Indian government is trying its level best to fight out this crisis! Let us hope for the best! Thanks for responding!

Hi AKRao! We experienced the same thing for more than a month in our place. I can say it's really hard for us especially that we are trying to finish our reports during that time. But I am thankful that the power was already restored and don't have problem anymore.

That is a good news dear Aries! That means you had a temporary power cuts and now you are getting the power supply regularly and you are comfortable now! In our case this problem is a permanent in nature and it has been like this now more than 8 to 10 years. It is understood that we are placed at rural area, but then many big cities in the NCR area are facing similar situation. The Government should do some thing to cope with the situation. The Government is increasing the tariff and not giving sufficient supply of the power making the situation worse. Thanks for responding dear Aries!

Well here in my city, the power supply crisis has just brought down to our knees. the power cuts have become so acute these days that we have almost stopped complaining about the same and we have become used to it. Whenever the electricity officials are being consulted they always give fake excuses and most of them say that due to felling of trees, we are having power cuts. i am not able to understand how power cuts are related to feeling of trees and road expansion. We need to overcome these problems in the future by adopting alternative means of electricity production.

Dear Subhojit, it seems you have got some temporary problems in your area. While expanding roads, some trees are cut down and because of this there can be damage to the electrical lines. But these setbacks are taken care and within few hours the things are rectified to supply back the interrupted lines. In our case we don't even receive sufficient magnitude of electricity from the Northern grid as the requirement is more than the supply. Most of the times we don't even get the power supply for 6 to 8 hours per day. If the weather is rainy or stormy then we need to forget about the electricity for subsequent 24 hours. Pilferage and stealing of the power in spite of privatization is the main problem I feel the northern part of country is facing right now. I agree that we should think for alternate source of power like solar panels or wind mills seriously to cope up with these shortages, Thanks a lot for responding!
