They are doing good business

Today I travelled to the college where I worked last for several years prior to retirement; it is 60 kilometers away; one can go by train or bus. Well while going I moved by train and while returning I travelled by public bus. In trains you can find pickpockets, fake blind persons who beg money, cheaters who attract passengers to gamble with cards and a flat –tape and a stick; I know most of them; they have their area of operation fixed; because of my daily travel for several years they know me too. In bus you can see the pickpockets and fake beggars; I know them too. This time I saw them after 6 years, they came talked to be, said by the blessings of god they have good business. During festive occasions their earning is good. What is the scene in your place, do you have pickpockets, fake blind beggars? Please comment on this and share your story and views. Thanks in advance. Prof. Bhuwan September 27 2012.

That's cool. Because of your every day travel, they have come to know you. I have never experienced being stolen from while travelling because I have come to knwo them too. I saw them did it but I didn't report them so it's like a mutual understanding and the word spread ... I could feel I have an imaginery armour against these people. Well, they could also see I dress simply so they have nothing to take. Now, that I am leaving in another place, I see similar people like that but I stay away from them. They are syndicates I know, but the government should do about it. The government should be aware and help them so they won't be doing these things.

We have those types in our country too---many of them. Between beggars and pickpockets, I think I'd still go for the beggars even if they fake their blindness. Pickpocketers are more evil I think.

namaskar sir Of course, our beggars are big syndicates. They have bank accounts, Insurance policies and also invest in big savings - like the Indira vikas Patra etc. I didnt believe this. but when my insurance agent called me to visit him at the GPO bhubaneswar, I did see one of the regular beggars there standing in Queue to deposit money. He told me that he is saving and investing money in the then Kisan Vikas Patras. Though I dont travel much via bus, I do at least travel once per year to Hyderabad. And the scenario is not much different. Within the limits of Orissa (I use Falaknama Express) I do see beggars, pickpockets on the train specially during the rush days - when they can do brisk business. Ask them if they would work to get paid or even sell anything... they would give you a look which you will remember for the next few days... they have become so accustomed to begging that they will not see anything else beyond this. And guess what, one guy told me - he can make 200-300 INR on normal days and even 500.00 INR on festive and rush days... So why work?

Well great to hear about u visiting your college after so many days. Yes the people, the places are very much attached to us if we travel by them everyday and seeing them after so many days makes us emotional. Yes pickpockets and fake beggars are everywhere here also and u cannot at all trust on them. It is very much dangerous to carry valuable and precious ornaments and accessories with u. Good to hear that their business has boomed due to the festive season but they should not dupe others and take away the money. They are not doing justice to their profession. What say?

Well for me it is new and in my country there are beggars and I think they earn enough to feed themselves. There are very less beggars in my country. But here in Goa I have seen lots of beggars and they are doing good. One day i was standing in front of a restaurant and i saw a men come out of the restaurant and when the beggar went to him, he gave out 100 rs which is like $2. So there are people giving them good money at times. Even if we spend whole day here on mylot we will not be near how much they are getting. I used to give them but now I have stopped. We are the ones encouraging them to beg by giving. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.
