I asked for more hours

Many know that I asked for my hours to be cut months ago. Well yesterday I finally bit the bullet and asked for more hours ago. I asked for a certain day though and at a certain time, one that again is beneficial to them. This will set me back at about the exact same hours I had previously and so I'll be making the same money I did before. This will definitely help with my plans and my expenses. When I do get the extra hours and money I am going to set some aside for a car, I am going to call a dirving instruction school as that would be the best bet for me to practice and to get my license. I already know where to get my non - car insurance at a reasonable price and with nice people and so I will go there to get that set up before I start the lessons with the instructor. In this way, even if I don't have a car at first, I do have the insurance for one and my license so all I'd need do is save up for the car. A first time car, that basically works to get one from point a to point b should run me in the $2000 range to be decent and safe, and so I will look into that as soon as possible, that is, as soon as I have the money to do so. Oh, and I need to order checks, so that I can just write the instructor a check, write the insurer a check... I hate checks, did I mention that? Anyway.. How many hours on average do you work a week? I'll be working 17.50

I am unemployed right now and hoping to find a job, though that is like looking for a needle in a haystack at the moment over here Those hours would not be sufficient for me to be able to pay all of my bills and I certainly could run a car too. Imust have at least 35 hours to be able to cover everything. Will you be able to manage with so few hours?

I feel ya Diana. Although I am working, I don't make enough to pay the bills and put food on the table. My boss did give me more hours for this coming month, but even then it's still not enough. That's why I'm looking for other work (or additional work if it's only part time). However, with working split shift it kind of limits my availability with other jobs. As it is I had to turn down a job offer last month because of it. If only it would have been full time or the hours didn't clash with my current job, I would have taken it for sure. Good luck job hunting!

I know, I've been awful about posting! Just don't seem to have the strength anymore. I'm forcing myself to type this as it is. I so hate split shift. I worked it years ago. Although I didn't keep the job very long (due to becoming pregnant with my oldest) I promised myself I'd never work split shift again and yet here I am doing it again. Good thing my job is near by, otherwise I wouldn't be able to handle it. Not to mention it wouldn't be worth the expense. I hope you're able to find something and soon! Keep on applying and don't give up!

Hi sacmom! Long time no see! I know exactly what you mean about split shifts and trying to fit another job in with themtoo. It is often impossible to find anything and I used to try and avoid any job with split shifts for that very reason. Now I would take anything that came along but it's hopeless, even though we are nearing the festive season and usually the shops take on extra staff. This year it doesn't look that way at all and it is getting grim. Thank you and take care!

I do 25 hours a week, when my client isn't in the hospital - like she is AGAIN!

I remember us talking about this when I was an IHA. I worked around 38 hours per week, but seeing as the client was family I eventually started staying at her home with my husband and so was her in-care help 24/7 basically. I know that where I worked, if she was in the hopsital I, of course, did not work.. it can cut into savings, especially if it's an extended period of time. I thought your client was just about to get back home?

I am scheduled for 15, technically, but that 15 usually translates to at least 17.5 hours. Clock in, get report, and work then wait for clients to be picked up. I am supposed to work 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. In addition, any meetings that we are required to attend are on the clock. Besides that, I volunteer for some unfilled shifts, no more than one a week. Those shifts are 9 hour shifts. I really need the extra shift at least every two weeks.

If we have open availability we will be asked to come in or switch with someone. I suppose that is one reason why I did ask for fewer hours, I needed a break. I miss some of my customers that I no longer see because of it though. We never have meetings, we were scheduled for one but they decided we didn't need it or something, which was odd. I've had to attend a cashier meeting at another store before though. Those are all on the clock. Heck here in the USA it'd be considered working for free if we didn't clock in. 6 am? Brave woman! I don't do 6 am shifts anymore lol

I had even more meetings when I was salaried, and in my book, a salaried person is almost working for free. I am much better at 6 a.m than at midnight. On weeks I have an extra shift it will either be Monday or Tuesday, so far. So my week might look like Monday 5:45-9:15 a.m., 2:50 - midnight. Tuesday 5:45 am.- 9:15 am, then early shifts Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Lots of naps through Wednesday trying to balance out the sleep deficit.

Yes, in my opinion salaried people work long hours and yet get the same amount of pay. If they have to stay at the place from it's open to it's close they are still going to be paid the same amount. In my opinion it's not worth it, unless they are being paid a great deal more then hourly wage people. I know how you feel when it comes to the need to balance out the sleep schedule, I experienced that a great deal when I was working for the hotels. On weeks we had completely off I'd be catching up on sleep for the first three days, hardly awake for anything. I work much better and more efficiently at night.

My hours tend to vary, but I've been averaging about 15 hours a week lately. I didn't ask for more hours at work. It did cross my mind, but it's such a small business I didn't think I'd get any. I did however ask for a raise last month. I know I deserve one, but my boss said no unfortunately. On the plus side she surprised me by offering me more hours (as well as praised me for a job well done), I just didn't see the extra hours this month. It's supposed to start next month. But even with the extra hours, it's not going to be a whole lot more a week. I'll probably average may 25 if I'm lucky. I can't complain too much though, every little bit helps, after all! Good luck getting your license and saving up for a car! Happy mylotting!

Lucky! My boss doesn't give raises, no matter how hard I work.

I was working 12 hours but will be working back to 17.5 which was about what I had been getting before. In my company we got a raise after six months of working, or maybt it was a year. We also get profit sharing checks twice a year. Thanks for the wishes of luck, I've not seen you around in quite some time!

I work 40 plus right now but our busy season is fast approaching. That is the potential for 7 day weeks for months. 56 hours plus for me then. I am grateful in these times to have a job like I do, but it is so hard to work that much sometimes.

The job I have now, we can only work part time. There are three cashiers that are full time and that is it. The other cashiers are only part time. When I first started working I would get 34-36 hours, which is basically full time, or almost full time really. That was only a few weeks and only because of the time of year. They can even cut your hours so deep that unless you have something to fall back on, your pretty much screwed. I rememebr working around 56 or more hours a week when I worked for the hotels, never again. It made it where I just could not find any time to sleep, or have a social life, I was getting sick because of it.

What is non insurance? Having a car is very expensive (trust me Ive had one since I was 16). My first car I paid $100 for and had a few repairs but my Dad did all that. Now a days they have a lot of stricter rules. My next car cost me $14,000, and I pay roughly $2,000 for insurance for a year, plus the repairs, gas, and so on. I remember taking the lessons it end up costing me about $5,000 in the end. I usually work depending 25 hours a week (my one job I get paid pretty decently), if the season was still on add 30 - 40 hours a week on to that. I am currently looking for another part time job, I applied to a bunch of part night jobs.

Non car insurance, that is. Here in NC one must be insured now before they can get their license. So for those who do not have a car, well... it's kind of hard to be insured, right? So they came up with non-car insurance wherein basically any car the person drives is insured. I believe the company I am looking at now is the same one I had used before and 2 hours cost me around.. I want to say $180.00 if not $200.00. I imagine that taking me out and then to the test itself would cost around $500.00 but if I end up having to shell out more it will be worth it in the end. The non insurance would cost me about $80.00 per month I believe, but it's the most basic. Getting the most basic one can get with a car at the same company would run me about the same per month as I had a friend who used the company as well. I know insurance can be expensive. I had myself quoted a few years ago with my exes company and that would be around $400.00 but I believe that was per six months... At the job I work now, you can really only have about 25 hours per week, that is all they will schedule you for.

i work part time and the hours are minimal but its enough to get me out of the house and give us some extra cash. i have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue so the hours i work are quite enough. i work monday, wednesday and friday mornings form 8:30 until 12:30. i like my job and the people i work with but i often come home exhausted from work (i work in a not for profit agency and its really busy so i am always running my tail off when i am at work in the time when i am not working, i work on mylot and i also write articles. that keeps me busy also. my boss is really great and has no problem with the hours i work and knows the issues i have which is why he lets me have tuesday and thursday off.

I have an aunt that has fibromyalgia and so I know a little bit about it. She works around 40 hours a week though and it used to be basically more. I also have a co-worker that has it, and she works around 40 hours as she is a manager. It's great you have a boss who allows you those days off and who will work with you. The line of work I do, grocery, isn't always so.. nice, but then if you factor in the busy times of year...

Well, I do not work for the past 10 years. However, the ordinary hours in the workshop were 40 per week (it was the year 2002). In Italy more or less working this number of hours, from other parts, I do not know yet. Yes, I say yet because I want to leave Italy as soon as I get the chance, I have no future here! However, changing the subject and then talking about your car, I think that with that amount (even $ 1 almost equal to our €), you should buy a good functional vehicle. But you said, however, still do not possess a driver's license? I am  right? Last question, your nick here "Somecowgirl" makes me realize that you're wearing boots it? I'm sorry, I know this is not the point to talk about it, but I'm very passionate about women's shoes, you can just tell me if they smell when you remove them? Thanks in advance for your understanding

To answer your questions first, yes I do wear boots but not often. Yes they can stink but it all depends on how long one wears the boots. Your feet do get sweaty and you have to be careful and wear tube socks so as to not chaff your skin. Yes I do not have my license yet, I am 25 years old. Factors had caused me not to get it when I was younger and then laziness as well. I am looking to get it now, even if I am a bit frightened still. $2000 is around about the cost of a bit of an older car that still works for it's purpose, nice enough I suppose. Thanks for responding and happy mylotting. Maybe one day you can leave Italy, but then were would you go?

I do not work at the moment but I do house work which is work too, .. I guess you are getting the overtime because 8 hours is the normal working hours and you are doing double of it. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.

I think you are confused. I am not getting "overtime" as you put it, I asked for more hours. Even so 17.5 hours is hardly considered overtime, even for part time workers such as myself. 8 hours is the normal working hours, but that's per day and I work six per day twice a week, and now adding 5 and a half to make 17.5. Have a great day and happy mylotting.
