Omega 3 from food and not supplements

The local "TV" doctor who is a respected heart doctor that does brief segments on health on a local TV station has expressed his view on omega 3. He doesn't think that omega 3 obtained from supplements is as effective and has all the components as that which comes from food like salmon. He recommends having two servings of fish like salmon a week. I don't really like fresh fish much. However, because of cost and ease and less time in preparing I eat a lot of canned fish, both salmon and tuna. I like them both. Between the two of them I normally eat a lot more than two servings a week. I am just hoping that the canned version is as good at supplying the health benefits as the fresh.

I don't believe that's true. I have 2 friends who hardly ever eat fish. Both had high triglyceride levels and started taking fish oil supplements. The levels went down considerably to a more acceptable level. One of them told his doctor he was taking fish oil supplements and his doctor said "Oh, you don't need that stuff. I have a prescription for you". And I believe that's the bottom line. Doctors don't profit from their patients taking vitamins and supplements. And farmed fish are fed a diet of sardines, grain meal, antibiotics, coloring dye and fish oil. This is what I've read in several sources. I've read opposing views, mostly from the fish farmers and government agencies. On the other hand the mercury content in wild caught fish is very controversial. I love seafood. I take fish oil supplements. You have to find a quality brand. I've read 3 reports on vitamin companies that were shocking. Some vitamins and supplements had much less to zero of what they were supposed to have. Unfortunately none of the reports gave the names of the companies. So if you take vitamins/supplements and you don't think they're helping you might want to change your brand. And I would much rather believe positive results & absolute proof that I see with my own eyes than believe a doctor who wants to give you a prescription for everything. Just my opinion.

The canned salmon I get are supposed to from the wild. I was taking fish oil supplements in addition to the canned fish but was having some digestive problems that went away when I quit taking them.

Yes, that can happen. I knew a woman who had a rather bad stomach problem from fish oil. That's good that the salmon is from the wild. But you know, it seems like no matter what you eat there's always going to be somebody else to tell you how bad it is. Did ya ever notice that? I try to do a lot of reading and get both sides of the story (if there are two sides) and then make a choice. But the last person I'll take advice from is a doctor. I realize someday I may need one. I know they're not all totally morons. Sardines are also very good, if you like them.

I often hear Omega 3 from baby's milk powder. As to adults, I don't think we really need to obtain it from the pills. It is available in the food like salmon. I like to take the vitamin and minor elements from the natural food because it will not have the side effects.

You can still get the Omega 3 from the canned salmon and tuna. I like the salmon better than the other. I also love sardines and they are loaded with the Omegas. So I'll have a salmon meal once a week and I make a sandwich with the sardines another day. I drain them, add sliced onion and just a tad of garlic with mayo on bread. I may eat a couple of those a week. Occasionally I'll have a tuna salad sandwich but that's not more than once a month or so. I do still take the supplement which is one of the few supplements that I use.

Canned things have too much preservative to be that healthy . I think if you dont want supplement its better to eat the fresh fish . I think it always more healthy to get vitamins from food than supplement , I am not always eating healthy so I keep supplement around .

If you don't have time preparing foods that are made of fish, then you can try looking for fast food houses that serve dishes that contain fish. Here in our place, almost everyday, we eat fish, many kinds of fish, or should we say, a wide-variety of fishes. So, I think, we get plenty of Omega 3 here everyday.

Although it's better to have fresh fish than canned one, but maybe it's still better than not getting it at all. I agree that Omega 3 from supplements can't give you all the benefits by eating the wholesome foods. After all the wholesome foods that contain Omega 3 is far better than the supplements. Although I do suggest to eat the fresh whenever you can rather than canned, though the canned still have Omega 3 in them too, just canned version have much preservaties.
