I Very Nearly Fell For It

I annoy myself at times with my gullibility.
Yesterday I received one of those cold calls. The guy was from a company that looks into your pension details for free and says there are 'no fees whatsoever.'
Mmmm.
I since found out that the company isn't even registered in the finance sector and if they're into pension forecasts they should be.
Why on earth didn't I find this out on the telephone when the bloke was waffling?
Fortunately, I could ring the courier up (who was bringing 'important' documentation round at 6pm) to cancel and I explained my reasons why.
Basically, no 'successful' company cold calls - they don't have to and I told her that I didn't like being pressurised into doing something I didn't really WANT to do.
John, for one, is relieved I haven't gone through with it and, no doubt, Mum will be too when I tell her over the 'phone tomorrow.
Have you ever been duped on the 'phone like that? Why I didn't just ignore the call like I usually do I don't know!

It has been a very long time since our land line has been cut. I couldn't even remember the year we last had a landline connection, but I could remember our number of course. Anyway, even without telephone, I still can relate to this experience. I have received many text messages which are obviously scams and never have I fell for any. It's good that I have learned of this information about these scams way back from when I didn't even own my own cellphone, and of course the messages are really dubious and almost too good to be true to the point of ridiculously unbelievable.
It's a good thing you decided to check on the company. I thinks this type of scams are everywhere now.

Especially when they know that people have money on their minds a lot more..because they haven't got any..if that makes sense.

I am glad that managed to cancel and not go through with it.You don't want to run the risk of letting an unregistered company anywhere near your pension which may eventually be the basis of your financial security.I personally wouldn't trust any cold callers as there are plenty of stories of people being ripped off.Though sometimes it can be difficult as some of the people that call seem very convincing that they are offering you a good service.

I very rarely bother even listening to such calls, although there was one occasion a few years ago when I gave some consideration to a call. I had registered online for an email account several years earlier, and the ISP running the website had actually issued me with share certificates in the ISP for using the service. The ISP had ceased to trade, but I still had the certificates in my possession. The caller said that they had acquired my name as a shareholder and that they represented a buyer who wished to purchase them. I told him that this seemed odd because the company no longer existed, but he claimed that they were actually interested in usage rights held by the ISP.
I agreed to consider this and he arranged to call again the following day. My immediate action was to check on online if anybody had knowledge of this because could see no way that it could work as a scam but was still rather suspicious. There were a lot of sites reporting this as a scam, but no details as to how it would work. When the caller telephoned again I told him plainly that I knew he was lying, so he quickly hung up.
It is automatic for us to consider that we were gullible, but a lot depends on how convincing the proposition is.

The reason I answered the call in this case was due to the fact the number was displayed, funnily enough. If the number is withheld or international I never answer it.
Oh well, I've learned my lesson and you did the right thing, checking online, which is exactly what I did.

Hi, Janey, I'm glad that you didn't fall in that trap. Thanks for sharing this. I usually don't pay attention to cold calls but it's good to be reminded. I was on the brink to be duped by a bank employee years ago. She offered me to transform my credit and I suppose she wanted to get some credit points in her work. It turned out that I would lose money. Yes, we need to be watchful and do what you finally did. Have a nice time!

I suppose the fact I mentioned it to hubby when he came in from work yesterday proved that I was questioning what had just happened on the telephone.
Glad it's all been cancelled in the end.

Hi Janey! Most of the times it is really better to ignore calls such kind of calls. If we need help of some sort we should always deal with the legitimate persons and company that we know. I am glad you were able to find out early.
Have a nice day!

Well, at least the Courier listened when I rang up..and no-one turned up at 6pm to deliver 'important documents' thankfully.
