Crack down on cyclist making rolling stops and stop signs.

Our city announced that the police would be ticketing specifically cyclists for not coming to a complete stop at stop signs. I could support this if this problem was unique to cyclists. Seems like everyone driving cars in this town does exactly the same thing. Why pick on just cyclists? I don't even think cyclists are the most blatant offenders here. I think this "crackdown" should involve all vehicles otherwise it's unfair. What do myLotters think?

I think if the light was green, just turned yellow, and you could not stop in time, it would be all right to let them go. However if you see the light turn yellow, and you are able to stop, that is, most cyclists can, then you should get a ticket. A car takes a while to stop.

That is another reason why I am scared to go on a bike. Do not want to run into anything or have a car run into me. What is a demand light?

Many stop lights have a sensor built into the road that will detect the weight of a car to change the light from red to green. Unfortunately on a bicycle I don't weigh enough to set it off. If there is no car there the light will not change.

Only time I go through a red light on the bike is if it is a demand light with a sensor in the road and there is no one there to make it change for me.

I am with you, it should be enforced universally or not at all, or only ticketed if it causes an accident. We all need to be careful and look out for hazards and for one another.

Agreed...if the rolling stop thing was unique to cyclists, then fair enough..but if motor vehicles were doing the same thing, then everyone should be being targetted..

People who drive cars are not just doing rolling stops! Drivers run through stop signs! Run through red lights! They tail gate! They speed! I have also noticed with some people on bicycle, ride their bikes on the wrong side of the street or roads! Cut through traffic! I don't see the cops fining them! I think it would be better to keep after the people driving cars then the bicycles! They cause more trouble then the bicycles! By far!

Yep. They do all that. The cyclist riding on the wrong side of the road is a pet peeve of mine. We're supposed to ride with traffic but some insist on facing traffic because they are afraid they are going to get hit from behind or that some how they are classified as a pedestrian. Getting struck from behind is one of the rarest bicycle/motor vehicle accidents. Most accidents happen at intersections and if you are riding facing traffic sooner or later someone making a left hand turn in heavy traffic isn't going to see them until it is too late.
