I don't have any experience in direct selling however, as i see my cousin's do this before when she was starting as an entrepreneur, She makes it a point to have a desired target clients. Well, most direct selling is a hit to people who are in a hurry and loves buying first before paying.
Most customers i see from my cousin's entrepreneurial transition back in the 90's is that she goes to her friends who are full time Moms, or young professional and have them browse the product's catalgoues, an effective selling strategy also that she did was making friends with working people such as beauticians and sales associates, and also working students She alway's brings her handy catalgoue with her so that when somebody's having an interests on items most especially sale items it is easy for them to order right away.
Hope this helps. :D

Thanks! I do love that there is always a sale of some items for at least 50% off. I am also finding customers who have never used AVON before, and are trying it due to the sales and because they want to buy something from me (they are my friends). I really hope that they find the products to be helpful.

Well my mother used to buy Avon. She started ordering it from a neighbor that she was friendly with. I'd say she was a loyal customer. She purchased from her on quite a few occasions. I think neighbors and friends are good clients. Also if your employer allows it you could offer it to co workers. I recall my mother liked the Christmas stuff. Maybe if they have some cute things this year you'll do well the next few months with that. I know some Avon ladies have websites now. That wouldn't be a bad idea since everyone loves doing things electronically now a days.
I noticed when I was commenting on a recent make up post yesterday one of the responders had stated she was an Avon lady. If you can find it I'd suggest asking her. The title of the discussion was about someone wanting to start to wear make up. Good Luck
