hiding meds

There's a case of Whooping cough at my son's school. Ironically enough my son started coughing yesterday morning for no reason and the sound of his cough varies. Eitherway I took him to the Dr to see if he had it or what? So they won't know til Monday (today is Friday) when the test comes back. However, in the mean time they gave him an antibiotic just in case. I thought his med would be fairly tastey like the others they've had. Well not this one. Now normally I'd say hide it in yogurt or pudding, BUT with a cough you should stay away from dairy. So what else can I hide it in that has worked for you?

If that doesn't work there is always bribery. I'm not usually one for bribery because I think kids ought to do what you tell them to do because you are their parents. That's how I was raised. HOWEVER, I once had to take liquid iron medicine and it was horrible (I was 6 or 7). As soon as I swallowed it my mom was there with sugary gum to try to get the taste of it out of my mouth. So when in doubt, let the candy do the talking. lol

It is liquid and it's bitter. I was hoping to have him just tip his head back and try to aim for his tonsils and bypass his tongue some how but he's only 5 and wasn't sure what I was trying to do. Kool Aid is an interesting idea though.

When I worked as a Residential Manager at a group home we would put their meds in applesauce. That way if they had problems swallowing it would go down easy. You can even get flavored applesauce to make it taste even better.

Ever thought of crushing it up in applesauce? Is it a pill? If your child has a problem swallowing pills, then crush it up in apple sauce. As for liquid, I'm not sure how I'd hide a liquid. Can you add "a spoonfull of sugar" as Mary Poppins would say?

That's how I do their cough medicine since it's yucky tasting... a spoonful of sugar, the med, and some water mixed in a shot glass.

I don't hide my kids medicine. I have always told them that I know it tastes nasty, but it is the only thing that is going to make them feel better. They make a funny face when they take it, but they take it.
Applesauce sounds like a good suggestion that you got. Maybe mix it in some juice? I dunno.

The med is a bit bitter. I gave it to him right away after we got it and he basically spit it into my and crying. He's only 5, but I told him try again.
This morning I'm trying it in pudding, apple sauce will not cover the bitter taste.

Honestly, I did not incorporate bitter-tasting medicine with other food just so my kids would take it. I taught them to take the medicine even if it doesn't taste good coz the medicine would help them feel better.
I remember one vitamin tablet for kids which tasted really sweet with a little hint of sourness. My son loved it so much that he thought it was candy. Well, that kind of too good of a taste for a vitamin could be bad as well, don't you think?
Better just teach your kids to take it as it is. But if he still wouldn't want to, then I suggest you add a little bit of sugar to it.

Yes you are right they do sweeten them so much the kids ask for them as though they are candy and not medicine. I have learned to only buy cough edicine that is not sweetened the hard way.

I totally agree with the first responder..that applesauce works
great.,and if its pill form try crushing it up and it can go into
any of his foods.....if its liquid just give it to him in some
apple or orange juice..
Good luck with this and I hope you son does not have the whooping
cough and feels much better soon...

I forgot to look to see who else responded to you. I would say hide it in applesauce. In nursing homes I have seen meds hidden in plain old chocolate syrup. I think you could also try peanut butter and jelly. The small amount of yogurt or pudding should not really affect his mucous production, though, and you have to weigh the benefits with the problems to see which is larger.

One spoonful of dairy is not going to make that much difference. But if you want to avoid it altogether you should try putting it in jam or adding sugar to it You didn't say if it was liquid or in pill form. How about peanut butter?
I hope he doesn't have whooping cough!! I did not know, until I heard commercials on the radio, that children got it from adults. There's been an intense radio campaign for the last year to encourage adults to get vaccinated.

Hmmm..That applesauce idea is a pretty good one. Jello might be something to think about too. You could make little jello cups just for him with pre-measured doses. Have to make sure you have a different color for the other kids though..they will be jealous..lol.

You know I've never had the issue of not being able to get my children to take medication, so it has never been something that I've had to fight them over (heck, I can even get them to beg for the nastiest tasting cough syrup that I've ever tasted). But when we were growing up my cousin didn't like taking any kind of medications and I remember that my aunt would always hide her medicine in a cup of sherbert. The reason being is that it is very similar to ice cream but doesn't have the dairy component.

That is very true with dairy and coughing--or just a cold or flu in general. My brother has this chronic cough that erupts in the early morning when he wakes up and at night. He drinks alot of milk for a guy. I wish your son the best and that was good they gave him the pre-antibiotics to help ward Whooping Cough off. I'm not sure what else to hide it in thats not dairy though, perhaps some kind of drink involving water? I never tried to hide it in anything but I have no kids. In the cat's cases, I had to always give them the medicine straight.
