Reputation systems on earnings sites..

I have joined a couple of sites - besides mylot - that have a reputation points system where you can gather points based on your participation and work on the site, and then they have the earnings page. I have relised that it is important to have high reputation even though it is not directly translated to more earnings. I think that the reputation is equally important because it is valued by the other members and it gives some extra points to our writings (which can be discussions for mylot, articles or reviews for other websites, etc.). Therefore at some point, I found myself doing actions to earn more reputation points and I thought it was equally important with the earning points! Personally, I think that the reputation points system has advantages and disadvantages. It shows the level of participation and the experience of the members but it's hard for new members to prove that they deserve to be valued members of the websites and they don't write nonsense just for money. In another site that I am working on, I often see old members being very strict with the newbies while they give their ratings to older members without second thoughts! Do you think that having reputation systems to earning websites is fair, and do the reputation points affect your perception on new or older members?

There are people I know that have been here for a long time and have lower ratings than other people. The thing I see with older members with lower ratings are the people that tend to speak their minds and don't follow along with what everyone else thinks. These are the people that aren't followers and even though they may have a lower rating, I have more respect for them than people that just follow along and say what they think everyone wants to hear (read)

I guess that happens in real life as well. Most people like it when others say what they want to hear. The first impression of someone might be easily based on that. And then, the actual opinion comes later when we get to know some more information about the other person. Do you think that the reputation points should affect the way that we think about others?

there is a principle in business called moral hazard, that is, where one party has more information than another party to a contract and the party with more information can do unseen and uncalculated harm to his unsuspecting co-contractor. that is the problem reputation systems want to solve. gaining a reputation is costly. so, when you have earned a reputation, you do not want to lose it unless the reputation is no longer valuable. i think that explains why reputation systems are favored by many earning sites.

So this means that there is higher value to the position of the person with higher points. It's true that it takes a lot of time and effort to build the reputation and it's definitely an advantage to have more points. I was looking for an explanation like this one, since the economic models were never my favourite subject and I forgot them almost instantly after uni! Thanks for the example! :)
