Alive certificate

India
November 29, 2012 4:29am CST
I am a pensioner, I taught in colleges in Orissa for four decades, Government pays me monthly pension; this comes to my bank account automatically; the bank sends message to my cell phone in details; thus I can draw from there. As per rules, every November, before 30th I have to submit a certificate in the bank, in person; I have to sign this in the presence of the manager and submit it to him. I have to certify that I have not taken any new job. It is called alive certificate; because my presence there proves I am alive. It is necessary because there are instances of ‘dead-persons’ drawing pension through bank. Well if I die my wife will enjoy pension provided she doesn’t remarry. I think other states in India and abroad have similar rules. Mylot is the best source to share information; so I want to know. Please respond. Thanks in advance. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . 29/11/2012

Since my father has passed away my mom inherit his pension. Every certain date she has to present herself in the bank to sign the acknowledgment letter it to withdraw the money if she so wishes. The pension money that the bank received every month has an expiry date. If the pensioner doesn't turn up to sign the acknowledgmet letter within a month then all the money are returned to the government. There is no certificate to present to the bank. If the pensioner passed away or his nominee then the pension department should be notified immediately so they could stop the pension payments.

I don't think it is possible as the bank need the pensioner to put down his/her thumbprint before the money can be released to their account. I think the grace period of waiting is one month. The money is not automatically credited to their bank account. The pensioner must come personally to the bank to formalize the Documentations

You mean, if she does not draw with in certain time limit the money is gone? She can as well give a bearer check to some one to draw the amount, what if she is ill? Thanks for sharing.

Hi Professor! In our country, Philippines, we have almost similar rule when it comes to pensioners. My father in law is a survivor pensioner and he is required to go to the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) office on or before his birthday every year as a proof that he is still alive in order for him to claim his pension on the succeeding months. But the government also allows that we submit a photo of him holding a recent newspaper showing the date. This can be done when he is sick and cannot be able to go to the office personally. Yes, he also claim the pension on his atm. Have a nice day!

Aries, I like the concept of this picture with a latest newspaper thing. Makes it so convenient, especially when the pensioner is old and sick.

It is still a year and a half before I will qualify to retire and draw a pension, so there is a limit to the knowledge that I possess on the subject. Nevertheless I am quite confident that no such ruling exists in my country or I expect that I would have heard of it before now. Of course, if I chose to take a part time job after retirement then I would be obliged to declare it for tax purposes. If I do not work then there would be no obligation to constantly declare otherwise. I like the title of the certificate and find it rather amusing because it sounds as though you have to prove that you are still alive.

hi, i don't know about that alive certificate because my parents still not in senior citizen age,but that is really nice because the bank assure that the owner of that bank account are still alive and the money will surely secure and aside from that it will be a proof that you are still exist.

Don't know about abroad, but the same rule implies in every State of India. In my current State of residence West Bengal, the same rule applies. I take my grandmother to the bank every November to fill similar certificates so that she keeps enjoying her own pension and also that of my deceased grandfather. Good day!

My actual nickname is Mimo. My grandfather worked in a Govt. department while my grandmother was employed in a private concern. Thus, the two pensions never collide with each other. Anyhow, both the amounts are too low. So low that she doesn't depends on it. Also thanks to the new and improved Govt. here, the State pensions are at a stand still for almost a year now.

Thanks for sharing it in myLot. I think it is a good way the government makes sure the pensioner is still alive. My father is near his retirement too and your post reminds me that I should always make ways to make my dad happy since he is growing old. thanks.

Hello Professor. It is the same case in China. My father was retired in the eighties and got his retirement pention. When my father was in his eighties, his unit came to visit my father once a year to make sure that my father was still alive because of this pension. I owe my appreciation to this discussion of yours that I got to know that in India, it is exactly the same case. Have a good day and enjoy your retired life, Professor.

Hi, Sounds like proof of life, like some has stated, the Government don't want to pay ghosts so we are all required to provide some ways to show we are still around, alive and kicking.
