Broccoli cooking

I really like steamed broccoli which I think is the best way to cook and produces the best results as far as preserving the benefits of broccoli which is supposed to be better for you when cooked. Steaming doesn't make it all soft and wilted like but leaves nice crisp. Now a local has an almost unheard of low price sale on broccoli crowns which is what I always get. So I was thinking of fixing more than my usual steamed amount that I fix on Sundays and have some then and with lunch all the next week. With at such a low price, I was thinking about having some at supper all week long, too. The problem is that my steamer won't hold enough to both at once and being me I really don't want to try to wash the steamer basket that fits in a pan and steam more on Monday. I was actually thinking if I had some steamed I would put it in with my peas that I have just about every week night as a way to warm the broccoli. So now I'm wondering if I could just use that as a way to cook the broccoli without having to steam it. I know that to cook broccoli by itself in water in a pan on the stove top does not produce good results. So I am wondering if this partial cooking in with something else, the peas, will produce better results.

I would do it in two batches. While eating dinner the first night I would steam the second batch. That way you only have to clean the pan once and you get to enjoy your broccoli the way you like it. Do you also enjoy it raw? I like to take the crowns with me to work for a snack as well :)

Hi stealthy, I don't use steamer for steaming broccoli
for I don't own any steamer. I'm used to steam broccoli and others veggies as well as rice in a big bowl placing in the big sauce pen filling with water. I have just finished eating steam carrot and potatoes, white onions as my late evening meal a while ago
I like eating them healthy and nutritious without any oil and salt added to them.

There are different ways of preparing it. Personally, I like to either roast the broccoli or chop it up and use it in a stir fry. Those are two easy ways of preparing it.
Food Network's Alton Brown has a recipe for oven roast broccoli (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/good-eats/oven-roasted-broccoli-recipe/index.html) that I think that I need to try one of these days. Of course, I would probably have to tweak it a bit, because... Well, because I always have to customize recipes.

I love steamed broccoli. I steam it al dente and love to see the same healthy fresh green it has when raw. I don´t like overcooked veggies and broccoli is one of the ones that are mostly hurt by that. I stam half of it in my smll steamer, take the steamed broccoli away and place the other half, using the same hot water. I don´t like cooked veggies it they can be steamed. You lose a lot of the vitamins that way.

I think that broccoli and cauliflower are awesome steamed. But I also like to stir fry them to make something different once in a while. What I never do is to cook it in water. The colour changes to an ugly gray and it is not as tasty. You can also make fritters after blanching them with steam.

Since you like steamed broccoli, have you tried steaming it on the stove?
I learned this now that I have gotten chicken teriaki at the mall.
I started watching the guys how they steamed their vegetables.
Since the guys only have a grill to cook off of, I use my largest skillet, and place my cabbage, carrots, broccoli, and whatever else I want to steam.
Then you place the fresh veggies in and just a very small amount of water around them. Maybe 1/4th cup.
Put the lid on your skillet. Mine are glass so I can watch them better. I will then see them steaming and add more water as needed to keep the steaming process going. I do this til the veggies are tender but a little crisp.
Then you can bag up your veggies you dont want to eat, and store in the freezer. I have a steamer too but for larger portions like when I make stir fry I use this method.
Hope it helps you
