May I exercise in peace?

At my gym they have what's called Cardio Cinema; basically a room that's filled with cardio equipment, dim lighting, and a movie of the day playing. Well, I've had to bite my tongue in there more than a few times lately. On Monday there were two ladies in there chatting away on the treadmill... do they do this in a regular Cinema? Another time there was a guy next to me with his headphones on and they were so blasting loud I could hear the words clear as a bell. Now not only am I there to work out but to forget I'm on a machine trying to loose this fluff.... not be distracted by someones desire to go deaf. Today some guy was really giving the eliptical a work out to the point it was making all sorts of noises that I was wondering was he going to make that machine walk across the room or what? Clearly if your that agressive on a machine maybe he should hit the pavement outside and run than beat up a machine.
That is my soap box for today!

i hear ya. the gym is a place for you to get away for a while to focus on only you! When there are people around who don't feel the same way about being at the gym it can be a bit much. That's why I go with my headphones on. Not loud because i don't like to bother others with my music. But it's a good distraction for me so i can focus on only me

Agreed! But when I'm in the theater part where I can't plug in to hear things I don't want to be distracted by other things going on... I want to watch the movie, zone out and forget that I'm on an eliptical or treadmill. If you paid good money to go to the movies to see the latest flick you'd be annoyed too, no different.

I absolutely love the idea of having something like that at the gym and I think that I would enjoy a situation like this one because of the fact I really don't feel like I would be judged with something like that.
With that said, I do think that if they are operating something like this at the gym, it would be important to monitor it so that there is not a lot of distracting behavior in the cinema room.

Oh quit! You have to change your attitude about YOU and know that you are at the gym to do something for YOU just like everyone else is. My gym has 20 somethings to 70 somethings. Few are buff, the majority are working on things for various reasons. You just need to stop worrying about things like you are in school and get your butt in there! Trust me I'm the biggest person usually in my body pump class and in my core class. I do my share of adaptations but I keep trying to participate the best I can.

Cute idea, but I can see the drawbacks.
At Planet Fitness they not only have a bunch of big TV's set up so that you can watch what you want while on any machine.. they also have TV's connected to each treadmill so that if you're on a treadmill you have your own personal tv. Each machine has a headphone jack so that you can hear the TV.
Personally I just download music onto my cellphone and listen to that with headphones while I work out, but sometimes I end up getting interested in what's on TV.

They do have machines with their own tv. The only problem with those is that I spend more time trying to find a channel I like (don't have cable at home but they do) than anything. And I don't have headphones with me most of the time so I prefer the cinema or the womens fitness area where they have the tv's blasting.

This wud so annoy me. Is there anyone to whom hyou can complain so that they can ensure that people are using the equipment correctly and keeping their personal noise down?

The library isn't bad as I'm used zoning out in the kids area while they play or take turns with the tutor. I just feel it's a place like a move theater, library or hospital as you mentioned that you have respect for the amount of noise you make to others around you.

I have so many gym pet peeves! The one I dislike anywhere is people carrying on telephone conversations and you can hear them across the room from the strength training area to the cardio area. Really! Above all the noise of the machines, above all the noise of people grunting, you can hear their conversation. Why can't they wait to go outside or in a private area to talk on the phone? Why do they have to talk so loud that everyone can hear them? Is what they are saying that important that everyone has to hear their private conversation? Private conversations should be kept private. There are rules and signs for a reason. Read them and follow them.
