I am a realist. And some people find it hard to understand. I look at everything in a situation and then compare the bad and the good. I am really analytical, and I mean extremely analytical. I have been lucky many times, and I have spoken about such luck a few times in the past. Well some called it luck if I made a business, even though short lived, that made me nearly $1000 in a month. Some call it luck when I won a phone.
Everything I sat down and think about.
I am the type of person who thinks you can't expect something from a blank slate. If you want to achieve something you can't just have faith alone, you also need to work for what you want.
So what is the problem when I tell someone I didn't do well in a test? They think I am pessimistic, or that I don't have hope in what I did for exams. If I cant remember something in exam so I guessed but I am absolutely sure what I guess was wrong, because I know the right thing I just cant remember it, THEN ON THE EXAM PAPER IT IS WRONG. I can't expect to do rubbish on a exam paper then expect a A+ for my grade. It is not being a pessimist. It is being a realist
Even if I know I have done superb on an exam, I wont expect a bad grade.
Everyone who hears me talk only hear when I talk about the negative, and the positive slip from one ears to the next, then assume I am pessimistic.
I hate it

A positive frame of mind goes a long way in making a person more sucessful. All of this other mind work you are doing is not really being realistic. When you talk about the negative you are being negative. Stay away from that way of thinking. Realism is characterized by non-romantic and merely practical view on life. Not idealized. Good luck to you!

And to be pragmatic you need to be aware of both results, both positive and negative. You can't be oblivious to the negative side of things. With the frame mind work of always expecting the best and positive, wont carry you anywhere from what I have notice. You need to see everything and adjust to that situation. I am positive when I know I have actually put in the effort for something, when I look at the facts and see that there is actually a chance of achieving that goal. If I don't put in the effort I wont think positively, because it doesn't make sense. You can't expect positive out of everything.
I like this debate its vibrant.

Adjusting to a given situation is great. If you don't put in the effort you can still think positively and hope for the best. It just sounds to me like you are being negative and trying to justify it. Pragmatic has to do with results not theories or principles.

Pragmatic has to do with results, exactly. But you can't have results unless you react the starting components in their correct proportions. Now if I put calcium choloride in water I wont create fire, so why expect fire. The most can happen is the temperature of the water increase by a few degrees celcius
Now lets see you put sodium in water you will get fire, so it is okay to expect fire.
What I am trying to say is I think negative when base on facts, the result will be negative, or base on probability.
I think positive when base on facts the results will be positive or base on probability the result will be positive.
The only time I put hope in something, is when the chances are unkown, either by lack of research or by just not having the knowledge. Even then I dont think 100 percent positive, only slightly because in my head in can go both ways.

REsults depend on what you do. I cannot expect to buy the lottery is I don{t buy a ticket. And I cannot expect to have a good grade in an exam if I don{t study. I remember, many decades ago, I had a school mate who went to pray instead of study. I have nothing against praying, but you do not do it instead of studying. I guess that has nothing to do with optimism or pessimism, it has to do with a normal knowledge about what reality is.

I find very disrespectful when people ask God to help them with small things. I have heard people praying when they lose something. THat is not done. I remember that when my grandson was dying, the thing I learned was to say "Thy will be done".

I have seen many friends do that as well. They are home days after days saying its either too early to study or too busy playing games. Then exam time, "I pray that I pass this exam." And I am saying to myself this is unbelievable. Really unbelievable. You were there wasting your time and then your hoping the lord will supply with all the knowledge you never prepared for. It is understandable if you prayed to remember the things that you have studied, but not to give you everything you have not studied for. The lord isn't here to spoon anybody. He is here to offer guidance, and help you if you are willing to help your self.

Being realistic is actually more beneficial than being a perpetual optimist, in my opinion. I try to look at the bright side of things but stay realistic. If I suffer a setback I try to look at the positive side of it and some positive results that may come from it. At the same time I adjust my behavior to the situation. For instance, right now I am in a tough financial position. I am optimistic that it will get better but realistically, it makes sense to reduce my spending even further than I already have.
You can be realistic without being a pessimist. Other people may see it as pessimism because they don't realize the difference between realism and pessimism. Someone who refuses to recognize the realism in a situation, such as your limitations on taking tests, will certainly fail since they don't adjust to their limitations but insist on denying them.

Exactly. I have been experiencing this thing where people cant tell the difference of pessimism and realism. And when I encounter those type of people who tries to proclaim greatly that I am a pessimist, I try my best to ignore then. Because there 100% optimistic behaviour that they proclaim they have make them feel like superman after a test or such, then when the results come they start to cry and feel sorry for themselves.
I am not saying anyone should not think about the positive, actually everyone should but you cant expect fortunes just by hoping and not putting in the effort to reach that achievement.

Me too...I am also realist. I was once described as pragmatic, though I couldnt differentiate much between the two. lol
But here is my take...I might be a tad more pessimistic than you. They teach us be prepared for the worst, and hope for the best. So what can be the worst in a given situation is what I tell myself..well, that can happen ..there are fifty fifty chances. Now when I work hard, and I have worked hard..I expect a swing away from negative..but unfortunately my results went boom..why? The answer paper got accidentally disconnected...yes...accidentally...and oh boy I lost interest for almost half year or so till they discovered their mistake and declared good result. Half year is a lot at the time of graduation, shouldnt there be some penalty for that? I guess not...
Anyway...ever since that...I am kind of ..there is always a slip between the cup and the lip...type of person. If you call it pessimistic ...I call it saving yourself from heartache..

To be honest I think you are a little more pessimistic than me but I always drop my hope just a little less than reality. It is because anything is possible. And to me it hurts more when you have great hope for something and up failing, rather than having a little less hope and end up failing, because then you would have condition your mind for anything to come. Having little less hope though makes you feel an extra high boost if you are extremely successful in what you were hoping for.

They see you in a different perception that is why they see you like that, even though you knew that it isn't. You are just being realist, which some people don't understand. Its hard sometimes, but we must ignore it. As long as you what you are thinking and you know what you are doing, you are not going to be affected on what they see on you.

Sorry for my typos. Ha ha. What I mean is as long as you know what you are thinking and you know what you are doing, you are not going to be affected on what they see on you.

I am also realistic. For example my husband always says the bills will get paid don't worry be more positive. Well when there is no money to pay the bills theres nothing to be positive about, the money is either there or it is not. Im not being negative I am being realistic. Money does not fall from the trees! People call me negative, I say I am just realistic. I have a strong sense of what reality is...

Exactly, now having a sense of reality will show someone that. If you want that bill to be paid then you have to actually do something to get the money in the first place. I believe if I keep up this attitude it will continue to make me flourish as it is doing right now. This is me.
