Last year the cat I had for 10 years died of old age. After a couple of months I was ready to get another cat. I looked everywhere for a free cat. I finally found an ad in the local newspaper saying they had to get rid of their cat because of husbands health. We made an appointment for her to bring the cat to me to see if we were a good match. When she got here she called me so I could go outside to help her because she had a huge bag of food and litter, a litter box and a large pet carrier. She didn't say much until we got inside my apt. Then she told me there were 2 cats who were brothers and wanted me to pick one and said she would have to have the one I didn't choose put down! She gave me all their vet papers and one even has a chip in his ear. She had "baby" pictures of them. When I saw these two guys I couldn't be responsible for having any animal put down so I took them both and never regretted it. Do you think she was being sneaky about the other cat? Would you have taken the two of them or let one be put down when he was healthy and it wasn't needed? How did you get your pet?

People are like this, and don't treats animals like living beings just as objects. They try to play on people. I had a friend have a similar position, and the lady brought 2 cats in a carier, and ran off. For me my first two were brother and sister, someone had abdonded them in my then workplace bathroom. I walked in and found them, the pound, and animal control didn't have the space, but they said they would just put them down. They were so cute, but sick. I said well if it isn't anything too serious I will take them. I took them to the vet's very minor eye infection, ear mites, worms, and well not fed properly. It's now almost 3 years later, and they are still running around playing like kittens. My other cat was adopted from the local shelter. He was taken from a neglect and abuse case. He did have his issues, but slowly working through those. My other animals were all adopted from the local shelter I volunteer at and have their own stories behind it.

I love anyone who would get their pet from a shelter. yes most shelters have more than they can handle. Leaving cats in the bathroom? It must have been an awful person who did that.

I don't need to look for a cat, people are always calling and telling me they need to get rid of one. I'd've taken both too....

Oh yes, that was definitely a way to coerce you to accept 2 cats instead of one. I do not believe that she would have had the remaining cat put down because if she was prepared to do so then would have had them both put down instead of finding a home for one. Despite the obvious attempt at deception, I would have either taken both cats or none. It would not be fair to separate them since they were so accustomed to living together, so it would be a simple yes or no.

You may be right that she would have had them put down as a last resort, but I imagine that she would have waited for a while because it obviously was not her first choice of action.

I think if she didn't find a home for the two of them they both would have been put down and that would have been horrible because they are both very healthy and good cats.

i heard a statement like that,i'd take both too.that's horrible. she might have been going for the hard sell, but still. um..as far as me,mine seem to find me. whenever one passes,it seems no longer than a month a waif shows at the door somehow.of my recent 6 however,3 were rescues.2 came from a couple losing their place, and the last was abandoned when the INS grabbed the people behind me and deported them.she was out at the time, and i don't think they bothered to check. so,dirty and hungry, she found a way to my house.and now she is fat and happy.

I have 2 males and a couple of months ago a stray was coming by every night getting them all excited even though they are neutered. I had to set a trap for her which took 3 days before I got her. looking at her she didn't come from a home that took care of her. Animal control said just looking at her she had a number of diseases. Since I already have 2 males I couldn't keep her but felt bad that she was going into a shelter. She drove me and my boys nuts with all her howling at 2am!

I will do the same thing- have them both. I am sure you really love pets and that's the reason why you get them both.

As soon as I met them I fell in love with them both. There was no way I could let her take either of them home.

We got Pumpkin from a shelter. He had been fostered by one of the shelter workers, and my husband fell in love with him instantly. Since he was not quite a kitten, he only cost $20. However, he must have been mistreated before he went to the shelter...every once in a while, he gets a little nasty, but he is getting better.

It makes me so happy when I hear people get their animals from shelters! Your right if she got nasty once in awhile she must have been mistreated.

I'd have taken both. I don't think she was being sneaky - I think she desperately wanted both her kitties to stay together as most cat lovers would.

Hiya ctry, She was playing on your feeling there alright to see if you would take pity on the other one with the story of having it put down. I have just had someone trying to persuade me to take on another puppy with the same kind of story but seeing as I did not believe him and I simply did not have enough room time or money to take on another dog I said no. He did not like that but I thought better that than to take on another dog that I would not be able to cope with. The one I have is very demanding sometimes and takes up a lot of my time when he does not want to behave at all. xxx
