How about a mixture of lettuce hearts, artichoke hearts, cabbage hearts and/or any other vegetable that has a heart, to the musical accompaniment of "Any veg that has a heart" (I leave you to choose the tune)? If fish is allowed, you could probably include some sort of fish heart and adapt the words accordingly. There is also a Coeur de Lion brand of cheese, but it may not be the most wonderful of French cheeses (To me there is nothing like a top grade cheddar - and throughout my childhood cheddar, in my family, was referred to as "mousetrap cheese" - a cheap cheese).

We have finished the cheese I brought home from the U.K. last October. Wensleydale with cranberries was a favourite plus a Stilton that had port added to it. A very good gorganzolla and oh, the cheddar's. I still prefer the British cheese to any I have tasted in the world. There is another cheese - a white one = crumbly and soft - but I cannot remember the name. This was a treat in our home growing up. Cheese is horribly expensive in JA and the assortment is not good. The cheapest of Australian cheddars of New Zealand ones are available. Oh, we do get a pepperjack cheeese that does have taste and goat's cheese.
I really have no suggestions as I am drinking my first cup of coffee but the main course should contain - cheese! What else? Hmm Think that I will have a toasted cheese sandwich for breakfast

Urban, do you get the VegNewsletter emails (free)? Here's the Valentine's Day edition:

Otherwise, if you want something simple, strawberries dipped in dark chocolate on a stick?
I must admit, I really don't know what your wife prefers, but I imagine she would have more refined tastes than us lot down here? Or perhaps making a substantial effort counts for more & presenting her with a large array of elaborate, but small starters should do nicely to overwhelm her? I'll leave it up to you.
All The Best.

That strawberry dish reminds me only slightly of fondue, but enough to mention that if you make a fondue (this is where mousehole cheeses like gruyere really come into their own) crisply cooked brussels sprouts (half pieces) make an excellent variation on the usual pieces of bread that you dip into the sauce. I've never tried 3-4 minute-steamed broccoli (the healthiest kind, according to Biochemistry Prof Elizabeth Jeffery) as a dippee, but it could be worth trying.

Not sure if you can have pastry..urbandekay?? One of the favourites of my family is mini-tart shells filled with goat cheese! Combine goat cheese with chopped red pepper (Red for valentines..LOL)and fresh basil, dash of salt, pepper and Worchestershire, fill tart shells and bake. Best served hot! Mini-quiches with your choice of filling. Soft tortilla shells spread with Cream Cheese, spiced to your liking...then a asparagus spear or black olives..roll and cut into bite size pieces..but after all of this, I am worried that you can/cannot have cheese. Off the cheese...how about a lovely home-made Tomato Bisque served in a Bread Bowl???

Bisque is a thick, creamy soup. Originally from France, and make from steeping the shells of crustaceans...then thickening with cream! It has now evolved in many forms, and one is creamed, pureed vegetables. Lovely made with de-seeded fresh tomatoes and basil! Not sure where you are located, but hot soups are still the order of the day here, as it is still winter.
Have a great Valentine's feast....Cheers,

Only meat or vegan? Spanakopita is a great starter! Here is a site with a recipe http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Spanakopita-II/. Tomato caprice bites are also a favorite here. I take large cherry tomatoes cut off the top and hollow out the insides. I then take small balls of mozzarella cheese and wrap them each in a basil leaf and stuff them in the tomato. I drizzle balsamic vinegar on them before serving.mmm Think I'll make them myself

I make a good runza that is meat free. I put cabbage and vegeburger in mine but you can put most any vegetable in it. You make a sweet bread to cover it with. My husband makes a good bean soup and a rice dish that is pretty good. My daughter likes to make tomato soup with avocado sandwiches. I dip my sandwich in the soup..

It sounds hard, I make bread but wouldn't know where to start wrapping it round a filling?

Not so hard urban. The bread is wrapped around the filling that has been partially or three quarters cooked already. Think of Cornish Pastries with a bread dough. Cut the circle and put the cooked veggies etc inside. Make the half moon shape by turning over the dough and and bake

Hi! By starters do you mean like side dishes or appetizers? If so theres a world of veggie rexipiesout there. What do you both like? And I guess it also depends on what the main dish is. I enjoy making crazy salads myself. One I like has spinach, strawberries, apples, feta cheese and some type of vinagrette. Hope you come up with something!
