We went to a place called Wolf Mountain Nature Center today. It's about 1 and a half hours drive from where we live. We heard about it through Facebook quite awhile ago, but hadn't made the drive yet to go check it out. Today I saw on Facebook they were holding an event today and we had nothing better to do so we drove down to check it out.
The center is run by volunteers and powered through donations alone. They don't charge admission but there is a "suggested donation".
It was extremely educational.
They have 4 coyotes. These were the first animals we saw. We learned their names, how they came to be at the center, and a bit about that species of animal in general. 2 of the coyotes they have were born just about 10 months ago right there at the center.
Then we saw the wolves. They have 8 wolves there.. all of the grey wolf family. Most of them are arctic wolves, but they have a couple timber wolves also.
The wolves were housed in 3 different exhibits. They couldn't put more than 1 female in each exhibit because the females fight too much. In one exhibit was the oldest male and female together. The oldest male was 10 years old.. that is about the average life span of a wild wolf. They don't know how long this one will live in captivity.. they got him when he was 6. Another exhibit held just a female wolf. They're working on building a 9 acre exhibit, then the lone female will move into the 3 acre exhibit with some boys. In the 3 acre exhibit were the other 5 wolves.. 1 female and 4 boys.
They also had 2 arctic foxes.. which were adorable little white balls of fluff.
But of course the wolves were the most interesting. The wolves hung out by the fence the entire time so we were really only a few feet away from them. They were very active.. if we walked along the fence they would walk along also and watch what we were doing.. (they were eyeballing my youngest son.. I think he was the bait, LOL).
They did what they call a howling.. and got all of the wolves to howl and it was the coolest thing ever!
We also witnessed a little bit of a fight. 2 of the wolves are in their "teenage" stage and keep challenging the alpha male.. but are quickly put in their place. It was scary for a moment.. but they stopped fighting after just a minute and went back to business as usual.
It was such a nice way to spend the day. The kids had a ton of fun. They've memorized most of the wolves names already!
We were told during the summer they have a lot more going on and do the wolf howls every Saturday night.. so we'll definitely be planning a trip back there when the weather is nicer. Although it was cold.. I'm glad we went today. We enjoyed it so much, and watching and hearing the wolves howling was pure exhilaration!
Have you ever heard a wolf howl?
Do you have nature centers like this where you are? Ever visit one?

We have lots of zoos around, including a free one that focuses mostly on animals native to our state. We went a couple of weeks ago. Some animals are off exhibit, but there was still plenty to see and the zookeeper was cleaning cages and feeding animals while we were there. They do a lot of natural habitat things there. We have a Prairie Raptor Game Preserve about an hour away, and a bison and elk game preserve, If I am not mistaken you live in the state hubby grew up in, but he has never mentioned this Nature Center. We will be going up there next year for a class reunion of the class he did not graduate with, and I am absolutely positive he would love to visit it. PM me more details, like the location, and we will put it on our agenda.

I sent hubby the link, and we will plan to visit it one way or another. We do get out that way from time to time.

This place is not very well known, and it's pretty small.. probably hasn't been around very long either. It's not like a zoo, much much smaller.. but if you're nearby it's definitely worth the trip. I'll PM you the website. They aren't open regular hours like a zoo.. right now in the winter I think they're just open Sundays.. and when it's nicer out probably Saturdays also.

Isn't it wonderful when something turns out to be so great? I can imagine how you were all fascinated by the wolves and no, I have never seen one to my rcollection. We have a zoo here that is being upgraded - mostly by contributions and this should be great. We all have an alligator farm but the best attraction for me are the Dolphins. They swim in an enclosed sea area and are wonderful creatures. We can swim with them and this is an amazing experience and there are also nursling sharks and sting rays in the same area.
But back to wolves. I have always been fascinated by themand would have loved to have heard them howl. I am glad that youall had such a great time and hope that you can find other fun things to do as a family

That sounds like fun.. I've never seen dolphins or sting rays in person before!
Here's another one of the wolves..

Love the photographs. You cannot wear rings when touching the dolphins as their skin is paper thin as it were. They love humans and some claim they have therapeutic thingies as they are very sympathetic to people who have disabilities and will nuzzle and are gentle around them. This really is a beautiful world and we should get out and try and see more of it in all its beauty. My love is birds and especially parrts. They nest in a tree in my garden and just seeing them come come at dusk to perch in the tree is a great feeling.

Animals are beautiful and amazing. I'm more of a cat person.. my hubby is the one that loves wolves. I never thought I'd be so excited to hear a wolf howl, but it was awesome!

There is one near here that the kids have visited on a field trip, and several down in LA that we visited. I've gotten on the e-mail list of a few others, and I'll get there eventually.
Saw the Facebook pics, looked COLD...

It was cold, but we kept going into the gift shop to warm up. We'll go back when it's nicer out.

I love animals so this sounds right up my street - I have ever heard a wolf holw and never seena coyote up close - only on the TV.
It is so good to get children to appreciate animals and nature as a whole and I am glad you all enjoyed such a good day out!

I'd never seen a coyote either. Our zoo has wolves, but they're usually hiding or sleeping.. we've never seen any so active and interested. It was so cool!
I didn't get any shots of the coyotes, but here's a pic of the arctic fox.

I'm not sure if there is something like this here. Probably there is, as we're surrounded by forrests, and nature preservation is a big movement/industry here.
But I bet, that even better than the sounds of the wolves howling was the laughter of the kids during the day. I like trips like that. Inexpensive ones where the kids have lots of fun. Those are the best kind!

There is a cat sanctuary about 45 minutes away. It is full of BIG cats. I have never been there, but my parents have taken my son when he was younger. We also have an Endangered Wolf Center about a 45 minute drive from here. Neither of them are cheap. For just the kids and myself it would be around $50 just to go.

It sounds absolutely amazing, just the sort of place I love. It´s such a shame these sort of places are run purely on donations. Imagine what they could do if they had more money to play with?
I´ve never seen wolves in anything like a natural environment. Although they used to be in the area I live, they´re no longer.

There is a pretty nice nature center where they have several different animals in captivity that is only about thirty minutes from where we live and that is somewhere we've taken the children several times. They have several different wolves, bears, and a lot of different varieties of fish that are local to the area as well. It really is something that is quite eduactional. In addition to that, there is also a wildlife refuge that is really not all that far away from here either. That is one of the places that we like to go to hike as well.
