My next vacation will be Las Vegas for the AARP Convention. I will be staying at the Best Western near the convention center. I will be there for 6 nights and plan to go to the strip as well as downtown. I know that some mylotters have lived there and some have visited.
Any suggestions on things to do around the convention center, strip or downtown? How about places to eat or buffets? I am not much of a gambler although I allow myself to lose $10 in the slot machines.

I lived 12 years in las vegas. If you go to a few of the free travel centers there, they will give you great free and dicount coupons to many things there. Alot are for free things. have a great time there. Go downtown at night and see the great light show there.

Thanks for the info. I now that you had lived in Las Vegas for many years. Did you like it?
What are the free travel centers? Are they operated by the Las Vegas Conventions and Visitors Bureau? Are they in the casino hotels or on the street? Maybe Best Western will have one.
I will go downtown and see the light show.

I loved my home. I hated the casino and hot weather there. My son was born there, so its special to me.

All the towns that come before Vegas have the free papers with coupons in them. Other than that, the only places I know are in the Tropicana/Las Vegas Blvd(the strip) corner area. Lot of little "junk" shops there but they all have the racks of the freebie papers out front.

Hello Boston Phil. I am delighted to hear that you will be traveling to the AARP Convention in Las Vegas. Staying at the Best Western should be comfortable. You will have to have a look at the downtown area. I hope that you will have a really lovely time.

I forgot you mentioned AARP... EVERYWHERE you go, EVERYTHING you do...if you have to pay money......ask if they give a discount with an AARP card. MANY places do, they just make people ask. Same with AAA...10% off here and there can add up over a few days.

For me, the Best Western is really luxury. I usually have to stay at one or two star budget hotels but Las Vegas hotels are really cheap because they want to bring you in to gamble. Best Western has all kinds of amenities and luxuries. I am planning to make good use of them.
Besides being around the convention center, I do plan to spend a day in downtown and one or two on the strip.

My suggestion is to spend plenty of time in the casino, after all, that is the main reason anyone choose to visit Las Vegas. Visit as many casino as you could possibly done, gamble you night and day away so that in return you can win big from those blackjack, roulette, slot machine and other games organize by the casino. There are many restaurant serving buffet style in Las Vegas, so you don't need to worry about your meal, there are plenty of places for you to eat until your heart contented. One more thing to remember, just don't think of losing before you even begin your trip to Vegas, think of winning first, and the rule of the game is that you have to play before you can win, make sure bring more $$$ with you on this trip, not $10 only. No matter how it turn out at the end of your trip, chances are you will have an enjoyable trip to Las Vegas if you can look at everything down there with an open mind.

I am going for the AARP Convention but will spend a couple of extra days there playing tourist.
I am not much of a gambler. I only play the slot machines and once I lose $10, that is all there is to play. I love the casinos though because they are all themed, interesting and beautiful. There are often free things to see and do in and around each casino.

In my experiience you can eat like a king in every casino in town. They have open buffets (and very good ones) at incredible low prices. They do it to hold the customers and have them play there. You can have a big meal there at lunch and then get a free drink while you spend your $10 at the slots. Luck! Although I think $10 is too little for all those days.

When was the last time that you were in Vegas? I was there in 2009 and I found the buffets to be pricey, however delicious.Maybe, I did not go to the right buffets. However, my money was also tighter in 2009 and I was really looking for cheap. I am going to look around some more while there and consider off strip buffets.
I only gamble what I can afford to lose. I can not lose more than $10. Of course, I have nothing against winning.

I am not a gambler but I enjoy the action. I went in 2009 and met people from all over the world. A English couple told me they come every year and I met a beautiful girl from one of the Scandinavian countries. I was surprised that they came to Las Vegas for gambling and excitement. A lot of Americans go to Europe for that reason.

I have not been to Las Vegas before, so obviously I can not offer any useful tips to you. But I am amused by the line that you allow yourself to lose $10 in the slot machines. It is right that you should have a budget(even in gambling!). But do you have a target too if you do win from the slot machines? $100 perhaps? :)

I would be very glad to win and many people do. But the majority lose. If I won a good amount of money, I would walk away with my earnings. I would not continue to gamble. But I have never won and once I lose $10, that is it. That is all I can afford to lose.
I have a friend who recently won over $1,000 in Las Vegas but she is one of those persons who can afford to gamble a lot and can afford to lose a lot. I can not.

Walking the strip in general, is something to do, and very entertaining. I also enjoyed the tower at Paris, New York, New York and stratosphere have rides, if you are into that. There are many shows at varied times. Look for the coupon book, as someone else had mentioned.

I was in Las Vegas in 2009 but my life was complicated and money was an issue. Things are a lot better and I have more disposable income. I know that there are some wonderful and entertaining things to do for very little money or even free. I walked the lower half of the strip in 2009. I plan to walk the whole strip this time around.

I am so jealous of you. Las Vegas is one of the places that I've always wanted to visit but it is also a place that I've never had the opportunity to visit. I know that most of the casinos are supposed to have really good buffets, but I can't suggest one specific one to you.
Now as far as the gambling thing goes, I'm not much of a gambler either, but I do love to visit the casinos occasionally (but I always really limit myself on how much money I am able to lose).
