Let's Be Thoughtful

Today, I thought I'd start another suggestion post here and mention some other shortcomings I find in mylot. I believe these suggested features would help members with their postings and observe the guidelines better here.
1. "Back To The Top/Next Page/Back Page/First Page/Last Page" function
As some discussions are relatively popular, there will be many responses and readers will be scrolling to read them all. Now since the "Response" is located at the top and first page discussion, I believe this feature will be a thoughtful and helpful feature.
2. Quote function
I am sure this feature will save a lot of time and effort for members who would like to quote another member's posts in their responses or comments. Be it some worthy point of view or an error, I believe such a feature is helpful.
3. Photos, Audio And Videos
So far, members can only post 1 photo in their discussion and at the end of the post or comments (for mature members). I felt that the admin should allow more interactiveness where photos can be posted within the post/response/comments making it more attractive and interesting to read and look at. Also, I feel if other sites could allow posting of audio and video files, I do not see why or how mylot could not. These inclusions are good because it let's members have more opportunity to express their creativity and reading members enjoying the posts.
4. Mylot App (Android/iOS/Win8/RIM)
I am sure with this feature members can be more responsive and forthcoming when they can post on the move. I am sure categories like travel, life, day to day issues or thinking will experience better and increased postings not forgetting added quality.
Like in life, I am sure being thoughtful goes a long way and I hope the admin here will realize that it is not the looks that count but the quality of the thoughtful features that counts. So, tweak and not twit.

I was actually expecting you to suggest some form of appraisal from the admin on good members' postings.
In addition to the reputation star, I was hoping for medal of awards for categories like:
1. Discussion of the Month
2. Discussion of the Year
These awarded discussions will be pinned permanently on the honor roll of each interest category where members can be motivated, feel appreciated for their efforts and newcomers a chance to be inspired to post quality discussions.
Since admin goes through postings of members, I felt that they should do a little more by determining and bring out the good discussions to encourage quality and making mylot a leading discussion site.

I can see that you are relatively new here but don't let what your lack of time here prevent you from saying what know and think is good for this site.
I am sure your experience online and participation in other sites aren't as raw as your stay here. So, do feel free to post whatever is on your mind even if it may not be with my topic here.
It is free expression here.

The myLot ap would be an awesome addition here. I have always said for a long time that is needed, but not sure how they would be able to keep track of what people are posting that way. More than 1 photo? Not sure I am for that as it could clutter up the discussion, but I guess time will only tell what they decide is Best.

IMO, photo and audio files aren't big files which could cause any worrying problems. With the present technology storage space isn't really the main issue. The mylot app also would let the admin develop the mobile browser version which is less graphic to enhance seamless access and synchronize with their main frame.
I am recommending a new appraisal which is to be from the admin on good postings. So, in addition to the reputation star, I was hoping for medal of awards for categories like:
1. Discussion of the Month
2. Discussion of the Year
3. Member of the Year
These awarded discussions will be pinned permanently on the honor roll of each interest category where members can be motivated, feel appreciated for their efforts and newcomers a chance to be inspired to post quality discussions.
I reckon if the site is going to be mobile friendly, more quality posts will be forthcoming and good posts need to be recognized.

Dear artemis,
I think that it is very thoughtful to think about our discussions and responses before writing. You have made some excellent suggestions. The Admin has been working hard to improve mylot. I appreciate the Admin's hard work and am looking forward to the improved mylot going live.

I do appreciate the admin and I may say much more for members like you who are the backbone of this unique site.
Of late, I do not know what has gotten into and over the admin but changing the appearance isn't the solution even though I did not have the chance to see what it looks like. I heard it is going to be like Twitter and would you believe it. I am just not surprised but disappointed.
I do not like the "copy cat" idea but do you think we should just let it go without saying something from our hearts. I don't think so because at the end of the day a Twitter-like mylot is not mylot.
On another note, I am hoping for a new appraisal which is to be from the admin on good postings. So, in addition to the (our) reputation star, I was hoping for medal of awards for categories like:
1. Discussion of the Month
2. Discussion of the Year

Again, I would really love to see more tweaking than twitting here.

I would follow you for 1 & 2. For point 3, it is already possible to post link to videos, but to be able to embed an external video in a response would be nice. I am not sure for audio, as we are supposed to post only our personal files, and I think this feature would be abused in various ways. For point 4, as new smartphones have very good browsers -- I recently tried a Galaxy Note 2, and I was impressed by the screen quality and the browser -- and the speed of phone communications improves also, I believe that a mobile version of myLot would be soon useless.
It would be also good to improve the PM section : we see only the first PM sent on the screen, not the last in the thread, and it is not always easy to remember its content to respond back. Something looking more like a classic email would be better than what we have actually for PMs.

I couldn't agree more and since you have mentioned about the browser in your smartphone, I hope (the admin is reading) that a mobile browser version would be available which is on a different web address where the contents will be more text based without the graphics.
At the same time, I think the mobile version - smartphone app will be very favorable where I believe when done ingenuously could take Twitter a run for their money. Technology is already available and I felt that admin should be tapping into them to improve the present site's operations and directions.
I had not seen the demo but I heard that it is quite similar to Twitter - so I do not think they are not thinking about going mobile here.

"I had not seen the demo but I heard that it is quite similar to Twitter - so I do not think they are not thinking about going mobile here." I surfed a bit on the new beta, and I did not read anything about a mobile version, but it does not mean that you are not right. Twitter needs a mobile version because its normal web version cannot be surfed by 90% of mobile phones actually, which is not the case of myLot. Speaking of profits, Twitter is far too be a success story. I am reading on a French blog about social networks that their "profitability (...) is so pathetic that even a greengrocer with no economic knowledge would see that they are an investment loss."
He concludes that social networks are only speculative investments. Mobile apps for myLot would be also an investment loss in my opinion due to the number of real users, relatively low compared to Twitter : you cannot expect to repay their cost of development just by selling them.

That's right for it is more interesting to read and participate in a discussion wherein something really important in general is being discussed for us to understand more of issues that can be useful in our daily lives.

I am sure nothing can and will stop you if you have something to post. So, I would encourage you to post freely - start as many discussions you feel like doing.
Here, I think it would be great if you have something you'd like to see improve here for yourself or other members apart from what I had posted.

Seems like a crowd is gathering here.
I don't know what you would like to see done to keep good members like yourself here. You may want to read the comment I have for response #2 to another senior good member (Hatley) here and add a few good pointers that you have.

I like a few of the points that you suggested, but my favorite is the app on your phone. I have always wanted something like that so that I can post from my phone when I am not at home. I do have internet on my phone and able to view the website and still make post on my phone, but it is so hard to do from the phone so have never been able to really make a lot of post from my phone. But an app would make things so much easier. Great post, I hope they look into some of your ideas.

I really do not doubt the members' intentions and thoughts here. However, I am sure you will agree with me that you would have find some needed room for improvement in mylot which I believe you need to do your part by speaking out.
You may not think it is significant but I can assure you no one will see it as insignificant.
