Over Devoted to Something?

I wonder. Are you overly devoted to something in your life that you might do better without? I am. Oh, there is sleep. I am a big devotee of sleep. I used to use it as an escape mechanism for myself. Now, because of depression I either over sleep or am sleep depleted. Can't win. And, I am a big devotee of FOOD. I love ice cream, chocolate, hamburgers, bakery goods. Anything that isn't good for me I LOVE. My mom used to go on these benders when I was young. She would bring home the ingredients for some dish she loved and make it over and over again. I remember the fudge bender of 57 as in all probability as one of my all time favorite benders. This woman could make one heck of a batch of fudge. How'd she do it? Benders. Making it over and over and over again. Till she had it perfected. And she was a great cook. Later, when I was a few years older and she had remarried and we had moved to Pocatello for the seven years of hell, she became a member of a Pinochle group. The eight or nine women would take turns having the group over to their home. Something is always fixed for a snack. And moms always got great reviews. And I was the taster. She made this grape parfait one time that was killer and the gals raved over it for months. What mom did was take some of the concord grape juice that grandma made annually and use it in her grape jello for the parfait. Concord grapes are so tasty. Then she made the whipped cream from scratch. Have you ever had true home made whipped cream? Just the right amount of vanilla and sugar make it so delicious. Then some cracked grape candies on top. It was perfection!
So, have you ever gone on a bender to perfect a recipe? Did it turn out? Did you make the perfect dish? I did once with chili. It turned out very well. Great ground beef and tasty sauce with just the right amount of heat. I think if you over heat a dish it takes away from the flavor and I am a savory lover.

I've always made my whipped cream from scratch. I'm rather OCD about doing things from the 'ground' up. As for being overly devoted to something, all I can think of is my kids, and books........couldn't live without either one for more than a minute.

I used to do everything from scratch. Now some I do but some are expensive to do from scratch so I do find myself cheating on some things.

@celticeagle I only cheat when I feel lazy . I enjoy cooking from scratch, and actually have found it cheaper over the years. I'm looking forward to getting my veggie and herb gardens put in next year. That will help keep costs down!

@sparkofinsanity Kids and books are great things to devote your time to. I used to have both herb and veg gardens. So great to have and enjoy. Can't plant anything where I am now.
